The Nationals were the old name, and the Senators remind everyone of

"Washington, first in war, first in peace, last in the American League."

I still think they should've been the Republicats...

actually the team was originally named the senators then had the named changed in 1905 to the washington nationals then changed back to the senators in '57. then of course move to minnesota in '61, but also get an expansion team named the senators. but then they get the hell out and become the rangers in '72.

senators was the overwheming favorite for team name but due to politics the mayor pushed for and got "nationals".

The Rangers still own the rights to the Senators name. Besides, its better for a new franchise to have a different name and "start over."
