someone is bitter (Jerry Scarborough)
re: Rocky Hinds

Texas and UNLV are the top contenders, and the smart money has been on UNLV,
but the Longhorn coaches are still keeping their fingers crossed because their
hopes for Mitch Mustain, the big star at Springdale, Arkansas, have been
dashed and Hinds is their last chance to snare another top quarterback for this
class.
Mustain, after keeping Texas at or near the top of list for several months,
dropped the Longhorns after he arrived at the Elite 11 Camp in California last
week.
Arkansas is back in the hunt for Mustain and Houston Nutt, the boss Hog,
hates Texas and everything in it except the occasional recruit he can persuade to
leave Texas for Hogland. He also is one of the most negative recruiters who
ever lived.
His venom on Texas is having some affect on Mustain. Nutt claims the Texas
coaches can't develop top quarterbacks. His selective memory forgets Major
Applewhite, who wasn't on anybody's blue-chip list and who became the top passer in
UT history, despite missing a lot of time due to major injuries to both
knees. He probably hasn't noticed, but Vince Young gets a lot better every year,
too.
I'll bet Nutt takes a lot of credit when one of his players improves, but he
doesn't give the Texas coaches any credit for Applewhite or Young.

Got the old "True Orange" update I see. They are a sad pathetic group.

What round did Applewhite get drafted in? I forget.

Yes, development into an above-average college quarterback (dime a dozen) is something to be proud of.

Applewhite was a very good college QB. Had he started the Big 12 chanpionship game vs Colorado, the sips would have won the Big 12 and played for the mnc. The Big 12 offensive poy is not "a dime a dozen".

Lurker....I hate defending Texas but Applewhite was not a dime in a dozen player. Applewhite was a heck of a player and is a heck of a guy.

Your comment about what round he was drafted in is shallow and not well thought out. They had another QB that was playing during Applewhite's tenure that wasn't half the player Applewhite was, but he got drafted.

Your worth as a college QB isn't measured by what round you were taken in the NFL draft.

As much as I hate to say it <just kidding, shiner>--

I agree with shiner. Applewhite wasn't nearly a 'dime a dozen' type QB.

I really meant it as a slam against MacIII. Perhaps I caught Applewhite in the wake. Point is, Applewhite does have good character and I certainly never liked when he was on the field against us. So I wonder how much of his success was based on his own internal drive and "scrapiness" (for lack of a better term) instead of the help of Mack.

Certainly, Sims never fulfilled his promise in college, as previously said. That's quickly left by the wayside.

Vince Young was highly touted out of high school and so far has done what everyone expected him to do. If, IF, he has a great season and is a finalist for the Heisman, then maybe Mack can take some credit for that.

I guess I was just trying to say that Scarborough had made a weak argument and wound up making one myself.

My recollection was that Applewhite was invited to several NFL camps and was told by some that he could likely make the team but would always be a back-up. He chose to concentrate on coaching.

That is about as much as one can develop out of a short (I stood next to him and he was 5'10" at best), slow guy with below average NFL arm strength. So yes, anytime a 3 star under sized guy makes conf Offensive POY and is invited to NFL camps, I'd say he turned out pretty well.

If Applewhite was a dime a dozen, then I'll quit stressing over our lack of qb commitments, because we can always just grab a few of those types and I'll be happy.

Lurker, just saw your last post so I'll cut you some slack. Yes, the Mack bashers will always say that Major developed in spite of poor coaching because it doesn't fit their theory. They may be right but time will tell as the sample size gets larger.

Applewhite was NOT a dime a dozen player. It is damn hard to come by a solid back-up. Hell, look at the whorns of late. Calling a backup quarterback who couldnt make nfl practice squads a dime a dozen player...the nerve of you people.

I don't think that you can really use Applewhite as an example since Mack's dumb ass benched him for no reason what so ever. Yes, we develop QBs, but we will bench you to get an unproven recruit.
