Sixty minutes ago from 247sip reporter Chris Hummer, a longhorn grad:

Longhorn Network, which shows two football games per year along with many basketball, baseball, softball and volleyball events, reportedly lost $48 million in the first five years of its operation. It's not clear if this move is aimed at cutting costs
The LHN has been averaging $9,600,000 per year in losses in its first 5 years. Yet he's unsure "if this move is aimed at cutting costs".
ESPN landed the other half of the B1G contract today so they needed to cut costs so they can pay Northwestern & Indiana who actually provide an audience. Texas' sports went south at the wrong time and in all honesty who is actually going to sit and watch what amounts to reruns of Gilligan's Island 24/7/365?

Just take a closer look at the crowd and that will tell you all you need to know about that "sport". Perfect fit for the sip/Austin scene

Pretty soon, they're going to be doing the play by play from a studio with a video feed piped in, like they do for Mexican soccer games.
ESPN already did that with college baseball this season

Almost posted a while ago, but to me it looks like one guy blabbing and the other 3 trying to hold in a fart. In fact the guy on the far left is trying to figure out if he already sharted.

but we have been repeatedly told they were making north of $10 million per year with escalation increases which would top them out north of $20 million. I think the contract was in Venezuelan Bolivars instead of Dollars.

If esipn decides to kill the lhn, don't they still have to pay the sips the 15 million per year?

If memory serves correct, there were a few redacted paragraphs (regarding that possibility) in the contract that got spilled via a FOIA request. I'm not sure anyone (outside of ESPN and sip AD) know exactly what those provisions allow for in the event they pull the plug.

So is this the big news Higdon was alluding to early?

Guess this means no more comedy segments with My Man. I'm actually disappointed. The more airtime he gets, the better for every program in the state.

A&M should just buy the LHN from ESPN for pennies on the dollar.

There's a reason this thing failed. One man. We all know it. You all know it. If not for one person, this thing would have succeeded and given us the quality programming we were all promised.

Not to give them any ideas that may work, but why not do a big 12/college football radio show on the LHN like the SECN does with Finebaum with ESPN's Austin radio station?

There isn't an active ESPN local affiliate in Austin anymore. Got an independent and a fox sports station.

Fozzy's show, Augie's show, taco tasting show,...

This thing has been a hoot since the debut, that is just laughing at these dumbass sips. Never watched the LHN, but seeing all the goofy crap they put on there. I can imagine what the rest of America thought about Texas after witnessing this stuff.

175 sporting events.

So 80 showings of 2011 A&M game
80 showings of 2005 Rose Bowl.
15 live events?

Sadly the Sips are making money. It's ESPN on the hook for the losses. If they are losing almost 10 mil per year and the payouts have been 12ish then the thing makes no money and they certainly have it away with ESPN to providers. The exit clause is redacted from all the online copies of the contract so no one knows how much ESPN has to pay to back out. But you have to assume they are close.

With the new live events only policy, there will sure be a lot of off the air space now. How will they survive the lack of their five most favorite games?

So instead of losing about 10 million a year, ESPN will only lose 6-7 million a year?

Bob Cole owns some radio stations in Austin, correct? Cross platform those radio shows like the SEC does with Finebaum. That would be very cheap to produce. Or are his horn centric radio stations failing too?

I assume this means only live or replayed sporting events, so does that mean no more live events that aren't sports related? Like all the bull**** stevetex told us made the LHN so great? Like lab experiments and such?

It's my understanding Disney is going through some real soul searching right now. Stock prices are generally up, so if you wished to refocus your corporation this is a great time to do so.

I'm guessing as they move through this effort, they're taking some "low hanging fruit" cost savings that they know will not impact their future plans for their properties. This is probably something like that - a bit of a harbinger of what's to come.

If they have lost $50 mil. They only have $350 mil to go to hit the $300 mil profit sharing point.
