what's so absurd about having a package of plays specifically designed around a high impact skill position player? I don't get that

Not worried about formations giving a clue to the defense for what play will be run? Said like a co-co-Offensive Coordinator for tu in the Texas bowl.

Ofcourse, but... if any formation can itself hide a subset of specific plays, wouldn't having a new package which would presumably operate under a similar method of misdirection and deception just make the opposing defensive coordinator's job that much more difficult in preparing?

I love comedy, and there simply is no better comedy than this clown **** show that is Texas University athletics.

When in Austin, give it a try. You'll be brought to tears with laughter.

Kyler will have the opportunity to be the starting QB for 2015, so yeah, he'll have the chance to be a KEY factor in every play. If he isn't the best QB prior to the season but is a highly mobile QB who makes good decisions, then hell yes, design a play package for him that puts A&M in the best position to win each game.

Kevin Murray was viewed by the Aggie fans as THE MAN during and after his playing days. I'd be a little surprised if there were unusual friction between Murray and the current coaching staff.

We're seriously discussing something Chimp Brown wrote about A&M?!?

Seriously discussing? I don't think anyone in this thread is taking Chimp seriously.

I'm no football genius. You may be right. I just remember being relieved every time OU rolled out the Bell-Dozer package. The announcers loved it, but it just seemed to indicate that they were going to run either a triple option left or right. I presume that it really narrows the focus of the defense when you telegraph a vastly reduced set of possible plays based on an obvious personnel change.

It could work with Kyler considering his wide array of skills as a passer and runner.

It just strikes me as gimmicky and unreliable; and possibly a bad investment of practice time required to pull something like that off well; related to the overall benefit throughout the year.

Close only counts in horseshoes, hand grenades, and longhorn recruiting.

Guys. In high school the head cheerleader came to a party at my house and I totally talked to her. Then she left with some other guy. I was pretty close to being the most popular kid in school.

So I've known Kevin Murray since he played at A&M and would suggest I've spoken with him a LOT more than Chip Borwn has. Here's my take:

quote:
1) Kyler Murray was VERY close to saying yes to tu, and "Aggies everywhere" were very nervous. - Kevin doesn't even know how close it was between A&M and Texas as he told Kyler to make his mind up and let him know. Something like "don't tell me about the pregnancy - just show me the baby". If Kevin doesn't know how close it was Chip Brown sure as **** doesn't know.

2) Daddy Murray does not like A&M because A&M didn't honor him after his playing days, implying some kind of racial reason. Chimp said A&M didn't give him a coaching job or make him some kind of ambassador for A&M. Thus, Kevin was pushing his son to go elsewhere. - Bull****. Kevin did have some gripes about A&M after leaving but just about every SA does. And none of them were what he suggests. Kevin wanted to play pro football, not be a professional door stop like vINTs.

3) Kyler's decision to go to A&M was made COMPLETELY on emotion, with his mother being the biggest influence. (no mention of Malik). - His mom did want him to go to A&M because she liked Coach Sumlin a lot better than Coach Strong. Have no idea how much of an influence she was.

4) KDS guaranteed a "package of plays" for Kyler this season. And this will cause major problems in the locker room, which according to Chimp, KDS has no control over. (I guess that's worse than guaranteeing the starting job). - Coach Sumlin promised Kyler he would get on the field this year and pointed to his previous QBs as proof. To quote Coach Sumlin - "I'll only have you for three years anyway so you might as well play". Chip has no insight as to whether this will cause problems in our locker room.

5) A&M could very well be "upset" in their opener. (I guess he doesn't realize that ASU is ranked higher...) - Moron

6) What parents in the world wouldn't want their kid to play for Charlie Strong? - See above

7) Year 3 is the make or break year for any coach, and KDS got worse in year 3. (no mention if Chollie will be subject to the same measurement). - Whatever

Did Strong not promise the starting job to Murray?? That would've have caused issues in the locker room at all at tu though. This guy is an idiot.

I think what Chollie said was "you know the QBs we have here now, if you can still breathe oxygen when you get here, you'll be the starter." The problem came in the translation, for Kyler doesn't understand jackerwobby jibberish.

Poor comparison, IMO. Bell was basically unable to pass. Kyler can pass. If Kyler has a special formation/play package that should include runs and passes (since he actually can pass) even if the reads are dumbed down a bit. If it is designed and executed well it can be effective even if it is simplistic. The sips basically ran a special play package every down with Vince and won a MNC.

I'm pretty sure Sumlin was referring to plays that are already in the playbook. We just had one of the greatest pass-run qb's in the history of cfb (JFF) at A&M. The Air Raid is already a very difficult offense to defend. Add a passing qb who has laser-timed 4.5 speed and great running ability to the Air Raid, and it becomes "pick your poison" for defenses.
