I've been to the one in Houston a couple of times, and it doesn't impress me. I think it is kind of bland. Chipotle is better.

chipolte is a sad attempt at a knock off version of freebirds

But they are expanding out the wazzo, explain that. It seems like you can find one next to every Starbucks now.

McDonalds owns Chipolte. That would explain the rapid expansion.

So expansion means that it is good? Expansion means they are owned by McDonalds and have the cash to saturate the markets. They don't have to show much if any profit and can survive the lean years until there is no competition left.

That, and they're not good.

Chipolte is owned by mcdonalds. A friend of mine, who graduated from UT last december, came to visit on thursday, and while we were out he told me about what happened to the Chipolte in Austin. Someone spray painted a golden "M" on the chipolte logo, which you can still see even after they pressure washed it off. Freebirds is great, but it was better ,due to price, back when my oldest brother went to A&M. Then the monster was only fifty cents more then the next largest, and you could have two meals in that massize alumminum rapper for very little money.

Does it take Aggiebucks? I have noticed that the Freebirds in Houston and Dallas are just not as good as the ones in BCS..

Well the original Freebirds started in BCS, so it makes sense the ones here are the best.

Think of what Chonghorn? That Chipoltle opened a store in BCS? Not much of a shock. It is right next to the McDonalds. They want to open three in BCS. They would like nothing more than to run Freebirds out of business.

Freebirds burritos are only as bland as you make them. Put some death sauce on it.

Chipotle is crap. Freebirds wins hands down. Better tortillas, more choices. The only edge Chipotle has is the fact that the staff doesn't seem so odd.

With the kind of cash Chipotle has, does anyone think it will run Freebirds out?

From what I understand, McDonalds has a minority investment in Chipolte, it's not like they pull the strings. If they are expanding (and from the looks of the lines in those places) seems like they made a good investment.

Add me to the CHipolte crowd, but I've only been to Freebirds once. Do they have Barbacoa(sp?), it's freakin' good at Chipolte.

I can sense the slightest human suffering.
Sensing anything now?

No. Freebirds will do fine because they have a better product. We all know how well McDonald's did with Boston Market.

Chipotle is not having much success yet. The new Freebirds in Dallas is doing great and that market was saturated with Chipotle. The Freebirds in Austin is doing great and they are opening up another Freebirds this month. I think Chipoltle has 6 or 7 stores in Austin.
hank92

Chipotle does not have barbacoa. They have some spicy shredded beef they call barbacoa. Kind of like Taco Bell with their gorditas. Barbacoa is cheek meat from the cow, and I don't think that is what Chipoltle is serving.

Okay, I'll agree that Freebirds will probably stick around then. I just don't think it will expand like Chipotle. I think Freebirds has a very devoted clientele (Aggies), and a niche in large Texas cities. Probably mostly Aggies. It will of course get extra customers on top of its regulars because it is in those large towns. But because Chipotle is expanding much faster and I believe has a better product, it will establish a clear dominance in the Texas burrito/trendy Mexican food market.

Good thing for Freebirds what "you believe" doesn't drive the market.

I'm a devotee of both places. Like 'em both. Freebirds is for the hippie college kids. Chipotle is for the grad audience. I believe that McDonald's only has a small stake in Chipotle.

Freebird's is much better than Chipotle. And I think the Freebird's in Houston is just as good as the ones in BCS. JMO.

The Freebirds in Austin is very comparable to BCS location. I have never tried any of the other locales.

Good schtuff!

please tell me who did they do against Boston Market. I am not aware of a strategy against Boston Market, I do know that they use to be Boston Chicken and declared bankruptcy and are used as a case study on how not to run a franchise. they have fixed many of their problems in the last 10 years though.
hank92

I think the poster meant that McDonalds owned part of Boston Market and ran them into the ground.

I think McDonalds owns almost half of Chipotle. They are trying to sell it, but have not had any takers yet.

Last time I ate a chipoltes in Houston (ok the only time), they did not have the option for refried beans to put in my burrito. Because of that it just tasted crappy to me. Hence I'm gonna give a big vote to freebirds. I have not been to the freebirds in houston yet, but i have been told, they charge about a dollar more per burrito than they do in BCS. Is that true?
