This place gets a little more California everyday...

quote:
AUSTIN — When bridal shop owner Nancy Owen found ants in her store, she had two choices: relocate the critters or relocate her shop. Extermination was not an option.

That's because the landlord of the Austin shopping center where her store was located is a supporter of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. The landlord imposed strict rules on tenants requiring that no meat or animal product be sold in their stores, and that no animals – including ants – be harmed.

"If you don't have to cause animals to suffer – even the animals we don't understand so well like ants or mice or chickens – why not choose to be kind rather than to be cruel?” asked PETA spokesman Bruce Friedrich.

But the shoe shop has to keep leather laces hidden behind the counter, the liquor store can’t sell beef jerky and all of this adds up to what some call militant behavior by the landlord. Owen decided she'd rather spend $10,000 in moving expenses to relocate rather than abide by those rules.

We report ... you decide.

I got to find our where there place is. I'm going to walk around the stores eating a triple whopper with cheese.

Is that the place that kicked out a restaurant or coffee house or something because it used milk or dairy products, and the owner was some sort of vegan freak?

That's sooooo Plan II.

I believe the landlord imposing these restrictions lives in Houston.

So...only in Houston?

I understood that during the current redistricting discussions, no one wanted Austin. They were going to make it like Washington DC - no status as a state. Austin should have no status as a city. Of course just now no one wants Lubbock.

Gig 'em.

The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the Nancy?

That's just idiotic. If ants one day develop the skills necessary to use power tools and build an antbed made of rebar and concrete I may consider letting them stay. Until then, Die Arthropod!

That's got to be the same place. I remember that from a few years ago. Eventually, the landlord will realize that radical liberalism and wise business decisions are incompatible.

No Henley. You're smarter than that.

Who cares where she lives. She can get away with emposing this in Austin. It wouldn't fly very far in Houston. We all know that.

Cajun - don't be so defensive about California. I know it's a beautiful and unique place. I even know that Orange County has a few conservatives.

But California has become of the poster child for irrationality, politcal correctness, corrupt politics and just flat out off the wall loony liberalism.

I read this morning about the bill Davis just signed that allows illegals to lawfully obtain a California driver license. Wow, that's really helpful in stopping terrorism being that 99% of Americans use them to board planes.

Stuff like that leaves a majority in this country just shaking their heads.

Urban,

Just like anywhere else, the market will decide. If the dumbarse shopowner signed the agreement knowing the restrictions, then she deserves these problems. If she didn't know the restrictions when she signed the deal, she doesn't deserve to be in business.

Either the landlord's tenants will leave and she'll have to lower the rent or ditch the restrictions, or enough shopowners (and customers) who can abide ants but abhor beef jerky in the name of some twisted version of decency will validate her market "strategy".

I wonder if this particular landlord owns any property in Houston?

That reminds me, why are we still wasting good state money on an ag school that can't come up with a solution to fireants, cedar, and mesquite after a hundred and some odd years of trying?

And, other than Rick who has to live there because he couldn't get an honest job, why do Aggies live in Austin?

There's all those Aggie jokes and whatever.

They should relocate all those companies they own or are bosses of to College Station, the intellectual, cultural, and business capital of Texas.

Maybe a decent restaurant would open up there then.

Hey Urban...if you'll wait a couple of months, I'll come join you when the weather is cooler, and I'll wear my LEATHER jacket, my wife can wear a leather jacket with some FUR collar, all while eating the double whopper.

Diazanon, Velpar, and Reclaim.

By the way, cedar doesn't grow in Texas. Ash Juniper does.

How 'bout I tell you about how Jack Lambert said turf toe put him out of the league, and how Jack Lambert was an All-Pro AFTER the scheme change?

I'll say this for you, tan man, you have a thick enough head that even a Rodney King-style beating can't knock any sense into you. You were owned completely on the Lambert thread and somehow you've twisted that into a resounding victory for your side.

I'd ask you how many personalities are in your brain but there's zero evidence of a brain or a personality.

trap10 - If you think any of that sh*t works worth a damn, please get off your ash, juniper, and go out in the country and look around. The cedar and mesquite has eaten up Texas, sucked the water out of the soil, made it unusable for anyone but goats and half-grown whitetails and the fireants that have multiplied like rabbits eating the crap developed at A&M.

If you ever develop anything that works on mesquite, please feel free to test it on my twenty acres near Carrizo Springs on the way to Eagle Pass. My yard in Spring is available for testing of fireant controls, and everything west of Austin needs something to control the cedar, Ash Juniper.

You know, the goal here is something that is economically and physically feasible. We already know how to hit'em with a hammer or pull it out and burn it.

Aggies are special.

You're a moron, Henley... you don't know a 3-4 from a 4-2-5... and anybody that can't play through turf toe is a PU$ $Y.

If you don't like it, come over here and I'll stuff it down your stupid ass nutless bovine throat, midget boy, along with a pair of your mom's panties and an Austin ant farm.

At least in some cases, junipers are cedars anyways. Consider the eastern redcedar, which happens to grow in Texas...scientific name Juniperus virginiana. Also, the Ashe Juniper, Mountain Cedar, Rock Cedar, Post Cedar, Mexican Juniper, Break Cedar, Texas Cedar, Sabino are all names for the same tree in question.
