Does Baylor have the bank to keep him?

He would be stupid to not at least sit down with them to leverage for a raise.

He is very well paid at Baylor and isn't going to leave Texas.

Art Briles wouldn't get through his inaugural press conference in Gainesville.

To his credit, he likely knows this.

The irony is he would face more recruiting competition from Chollie if he moved to Florida.

Briles is going to OU when Stoops goes to UF.

Briles is the second highest paid coach in the country at a private school. (I think)
He does not like nor do well with the media and public speaking.
He will never leave the state of Texas.
He goes home at night sits on his porch over looking the Brazos and likes it.
Expectations at Baylor at a lot easier to meet than at Florida, OU etc.

I agree with this.

Briles isn't leaving Baylor unless he fails and gets fired. He's a good coach, and is uninterested in fame and fortune. He is already close to fortune. He has a good thing going, with Texas and OU not very competitive.

Also, why would Art leave his ties to Texas high school football?

They were going to, but then they started getting in a dick measuring contest and neither side wanted to back down. So now because of their pride Briles is stuck at little ol' Baylor and Texas is stuck with little ol' Charlie.

Texas has too high a view of itself to allow a low-pedigree former HS coach come in and be the star.

They are fundamentally more interested in the brand than the product.

Briles just edges Dana for 5th highest paid coach in BDF. There are 8 SEC head coaches that make more than him. And that's just base pay. If you look at a max bonus case 12 SEC coaches could make more than he could at Baylor. I could see him at least using it as leverage.

I guess your looking at the USA today numbers, which Baylor doesn't release, but everywhere Ive seen reports it form 3.5M to 4.2M, and USA today also has "0" for his bonus, which because private school, they don't have that info. Don't see him leaving for UF for $1M more and a ton more pressure. Make a bowl at Baylor and its a success.

Baylor said his new contract last year put him in the top 10 of highest paid coaches, so my guess is he is closer to 4M. He's not leaving Baylor, and I don't think he can leverage 2 years in a row to get another raise unless they make it into the playoff, which I also don't see happening.

Doesnt his contract have some massive buyout associated with it that would make it almost impossible to hire him?

They wanted Briles to interview. Briles told them hire me without one. As mentioned above, it became a peen measuring contest. In the end, it looks like the sips wanted Briles more than Briles wanted the sips.

I think his point was, "My interview was rubbing y'alls nose in your own **** the past 2 years!...now pay me!!!" I would handle it the same way. Mid-way thru the UCF game...I just knew he was gone.

Briles can get away with more cheating at the private school.

Then you are as big a d*** as Briles. Either give them an interview, as any decent person would, or say you aren't interested.

In defense of Texas...no interview, no job. The University has duties and responsibilities and in the end he's still just a football coach.

Ok numbnuts, give me a list of legit questions you would ask Art in an interview setting if you were the AD? I guarantee you every dip**** question you come up with, would just embarrass you to ask him...and him to answer. Propelling Baylor from where we were 10 years ago to where we are now demands no explanation. NONE.

Edit: ...not even considering what he accomplished at UH and SHS. He handed Summy a golden goose at UH.

So the only thing that the namesake Univesity in the state needs to know about the highest profile hire that they can make and one that can have an effect on a tremendous range of things from finances to public image to alumni relations is that he made a lousy team competitive in a suspect conference?

Briles is good. Briles may be great. What I'm saying....numb nuts....is that grownups don't do that crap when they have actual, real and broad responsibilities to things other than making sure your pecker appears larger to you for four hours on Saturdays in the Fall.
