Rutherford investigated in nightclub incident

Tuesday, September 2, 2003

Associated Press

PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh coach Walt Harris wouldn't say Tuesday whether starting quarterback Rod Rutherford would be suspended or disciplined for his apparent involvement in a weekend incident at a nightclub.

No charges have been filed, but Pittsburgh police confirmed they are investigating whether Rutherford may have kicked out a car window after approaching a vehicle that apparently contained several female acquaintances.

"We are in the process of gathering information so we are sure we know exactly what happened," Harris said Tuesday. "We're not done. When we're done, we'll give you (the news media) our perception."

Harris agreed the incident has become a distraction to the 10th-ranked Panthers, who didn't play over the Labor Day weekend and open Saturday against Kent State.

"For sure, it's a distraction," Harris said. "I've heard Rod's side (of the story). I want to find out everything. Until we're satisfied we know everything, I'm not going to do anything."

Harris gave no indication when a decision on Rutherford's status for Saturday's game would be made. But there was no indication Tuesday that Rutherford wouldn't play.

"I'm not going to theorize until I get the facts and know what the situation is completely." Harris said. "Until then, I don't want to comment on it."

Rutherford, a senior, led Pitt to a 9-4 record and Insight Bowl victory last season by throwing for 2,783 yards and 22 touchdowns. His 3,181 yards in total offense set a Pittsburgh school record and was the third highest total in Big East history.

Pittsburgh quarterback may face charges, suspension
September 2, 2003, at 01:16 PM ET
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - University of Pittsburgh starting quarterback Rod Rutherford could face charges after a 19-year-old woman filed a criminal complaint early Monday morning.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is reporting that the woman filed a police report after an alleged incident took place in the parking lot behind Philthy McNasty's, a Station Square bar and grill. (That sounds like a fun place!)

According to the complaint, the woman said that Rutherford was in a car with her and two friends, and made advances toward her. She claimed that he got out of the vehicle and grabbed her arm, trying to remove her from car, when she rejected his advances.

The woman further claimed that Rutherford then shattered a car window with his foot as she drove away, with the woman being hit with some of the shattered glass. She also alleged that she bumped her head during the incident, but did not seek immediate medical treatment.

Rutherford, on the other hand, said that he reacted when the woman threw a glass at him in the parking lot. No charges have been filed as of yet, and Rutherford is cooperating with authorities, according to his attorney.

"We're constantly driving home the message to our kids about their conduct and off-the-field activities," said Pittsburgh head coach Walt Harris.

Harris further stated that the team was "continuing to gather all of the information" about the incident, and that no decision would be made about Rutherford's status until the investigation is complete.

The 10th-ranked Panthers open their season Saturday against Kent State at Heinz Field. If Harris suspends Rutherford, sophomore Tyler Palko may get the start.

A fifth-year senior, Rutherford passed for 2783 yards and 22 touchdowns last season on 52.3 percent passing. He also ran for 398 yards and six touchdowns, and is considered a Heisman Trophy candidate.

A college kid in a fracas at a bar? Oh my gawd! Stop the presses.

He ought to be thrown out of school and sent to prison for 30 years. What in the hell is this world comimg to? I'm surprised that 10 ambulance chasers haven't filed suit already. How long till Jesse Jackson arrives?

If he had been playing for Mack and tu, then we would already be seeing sworn affidavits (in his defense) and the girl recanting her original charges OR complaints against him. She would walk away with money in her pocket and he would never miss a practice or game. It would all go away in a blink of an eye.

He should have signed with Mack.
