ST. LOUIS -- Kim Herring returned a fumble by Keyshawn Johnson 59 yards for a touchdown in the St. Louis Rams' 26-16 exhibition victory over the Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday night.

Buccaneers third-string quarterback Chris Simms, a rookie from Texas, played most of the second half and threw two touchdown passes and two 2-point conversion passes.

Kurt Warner was perfect on his only drive of the game, going 7 for 7 for 55 yards to set up a field goal, while the Bucs' defense failed to lay a hand on him.

The Rams (1-1) also ended a five-game losing streak in the preseason. They were 0-4 last year following a Super Bowl loss to the Patriots, and then began the regular season 0-5.

The Bucs (2-1) sputtered after totaling 50 points in their first two preseason games, although Brad Johnson was 7 for 9 for 55 yards.

Offensive tackle Kenyatta Walker sat out with a sprained ankle for Tampa Bay, which has won each of the last three regular-season meetings against the Rams.

WOW! Third quarter TDs against preseason scrubs! Maybe the NFL will award him the coveted "pre-season Heisman" that all the veterans tell the rookies to shoot for!

Exuse me...

Wow. His career stats must be jumping off the charts! Let's just pray for his sake Oklahoma City doesn't get a N.F.L. franchise.

It's amazing what a player can do when he's surrounded by more substance than hype, both on the field and on the sidelines.

The guys that he is throwing against will be lucky to make it on as pratice squad members.

Actually, Chrissy did have a pretty decent game and didn't look bad at all for the few plays I saw, which included the swing throw left to single coverage for the first TD.

I hope that all teasips realize that this is preseason, but I'm sure the "rookie of the year" hype has already started on nutlessbovinefans.com.

Poor Brandi - just can't get over the fact that Chris is having as much success against the pro's as he did against the WC.

Pure delusion... I don't give a crap about your NFL scout team running scrub that barely hung on to the last rung of the third round. I just said he had a decent game... what more would you burned orange imbeciles like? Whatever it is, forget it.

...but Chris sure as hell hasn't loss the stigma that he only gets TD's when it won't change the outcome of the game.

I think that he looked good last night, except that he hangs on to the ball too long and got sacked at least 2 times in the same drive.
But that will be fixed once he gets more reps or gets better at "read and react".

At least we know that coaching is what was holding him back at tu. Not a good thing to hear if you are a horn.

We'll see how well he does if he gets to play in the regular season. I think that he may actually do all right!!

Simms doesn't play the Ags anymore, so I'll root for him. In the preseason, I always root for the third stringers and those guys just trying to make the team.

Simms looked decent last night. Two things I didn't like: 1)Simms leaving the field when he jammed his finger. I don't know how serious it was, but it wasn't broken, so IMO it made him look "soft." 2) The comparison between Bob & Brian Griese and Phil & Chris Simms. What a dumb comparison. I hate when they take completely unrelated topics and try to make a correlation.

I have no doubt that Simms will enjoy at a minimum a moderate level of success in the NFL. He certainly has the tools and will be well developed at that level.

One thing I also have little doubt of is that you will hear very little from the guy in regards to UT. I seriously doubt he looks back on his days in Austin with fondness. In fact, seemed to me and the rest of the world that he wanted off the 40 acres something fierce. I guess that's what you get when your own fans humiliate you on a regular basis. The inverse of course is why our Ag NFL players are always coming back to A&M, lauding Aggieland and representing our University often.

You may consider Simms another longhorn in the NFL, but I doubt he does.

Holding him back? You mean "holding him back as in setting a slew of records for UT QB's?" You mean "holding him back as in crushing the Aggies the last few years?" You mean "holding him back as in going 22-4 as a starter the last two years and guiding his team to a 5th and 6th place national ranking?" You mean "holding him back as in treating our defense like his own personal biatch?"

How exactly was he held back at Texas?

We mean "holding him back" as a supposed sure fire Heisman winner and #1 draft pick who never even made the all conference team.

That's what we mean by "holding him back".

Or "holding him back" as in complete collapses against solid teams, i.e. 0 TD's and 15 INT's against Top Ten teams.

Or "holding him back" as in stopping him from tatooing the OL names on his other ankle because this is really looking gay now.

One wonders, then, why he didn't just leave early?

I haven't seen, heard or read a damned thing about Chris Simms that says he regrets coming to the university. He did go against daddy Phil's wishes to come here.

Keep searching for the moral victory, you'll find one somewhere.

first of all, it was 14. Second of all, I didn't see you discuss the INT that went off of BJ Johnson's chest and straight to Teddy Lehman. I didn't see you discuss the INT where Kyle Shanahan just broke off the route against OU. I didn't see you discuss the INT against Texas Tech where BJ Johnson forgot to turn inside.

I didn't see you discuss the INT against OU where Brett Robin missed his block, and Roy Williams hit Chris from the blind side. I didn't see you discuss the two INT's against OU and Oregon that were on 50+ yard hail mary throws.

I didn't see you discuss the three dropped TD's in the end zone against Oregon in the fourth quarter. I didn't see you include the Kansas State game in your analysis, even though they finished the season a top 5 team and arguably the best team in the Big XII. I didn't see you discuss the fact that Simms got to throw past 15 yards four times the entire game against OU.

Yes, everything was Simms' fault... what a loser. There certainly couldn't have been other factors that played a part when he "struggled", could there?

You know, you don't have to lie to make Chris Simms' performances against top teams look bad. Last year alone he

* ran for 2 TDs against OU
* threw for 2 TDs against Kansas State

It's not his fault A&M fielded nothing but abject pansies throughout his career.

Yes, Chrissy can look back at his tu career and beam with pride that he won three out of four of his Superbowls with DADDY, even if he DID never get a ring, never get a trophy, never make all-conference, never get a high draft pick, etc.

P.S. It's kind of hard to leave The People's Republik early for the NFL when Old Yeller sits you on the bench for your junior bowl game. Wake up, sips.

Pure Chapman,
At Texas, Simms had his ring finger dislocated about once every 3 games. He'd go over to the sideline and have the trainer pop it in and continue playing. It happened against Nebraska last year, and the announcers were raving about his toughness. Even though they reported a jammed finger last night, I'm almost positive that it was dislocated again.

So you're saying that Chris had problems because he was surrounded by subpar talent? But I thought Texas had ultimate recruiting classes? And what's this pinning things on BJ Johnson? Wasn't he the all-world receiver right behind Roy Williams?
LonghornDub
How long do you want to ignore this user?
HookemBucs - Excellent post and welcome to the board. One quibble: While the pass to BJ at the end of the Tech game was thrown on target by Chris, BJ didn't forget to turn in. He was bumped off his route by the Tech defender and couldn't. I'm not complaining; that's just what I saw.

BJ had the drops against Simms over the course of his career. Doesn't mean he's horrible, but at least he's good enough to catch passes all over the Ags.

talent doesn't have to be "subpar" to make mistakes. That stuff happens, even to very talented players. My point is that I'm just not big on using interceptions as a way of measuring a quarterback's success or failure.

I look at interceptions the way I look at runs allowed by a pitcher in baseball... it's not unimportant, but the primary consideration should be what's earned. Even though he played with good talent, a vast number of those 14 picks came as a result of mistakes from other players and not Chris.

I also disagree with how the top 10 stat is measured. For example, if OU is undefeated and Texas beats them, and OU goes on to finish 8-5, I won't look at it as beating a top 10 team. For the majority of the season, the top 10 is determined by talent and hype... it isn't until late in the season when the real top teams begin to show.

In other words, when I measure the value of a win, I look at where the team finished in the polls, not where they were at the time of the game. Obviously, the 2002 KSU team and the 2001 Colorado team were much better than the 17 and 14 they were ranked in the polls (both finished top 7), but because they weren't hyped in the preseason, they weren't technically ranked in the top 10 when they played Texas. imo, it doesn't make them any less of a team.

So you admit that t.u.'s coaching staff sucks balls and wasted Simms' talent. Good to know.
