Please refresh my memory. I always thought Hugh McElroy (sp?) was the first black player. Is this true, and was he a walk on? I was there the night he caught the pass that beat LSU. The late great Dan Cook described the play.......McElroy caught the pass and there were 50 yards of green grass and white stripes between him and the goal line, and he didn't stumble. Believe me, those Tigers were not happy campers.

A&M had a black player on their 1967 SWC championship team. I had a team photo of that team, and probably still do, but don't know where it is. But I'm 100% certain it's true.

And I remember exactly where I was listening to the radio when McElroy caught that pass in Baton Rouge. I was 12 years old then but remember it better than most of our plays last year.

Upon further review, and consultation with a classmate, it seems we're both right as there were two blacks on the '67 team. However they were never played in a game. Therefore, McElroy was the first black to play for the Aggies. That game was something else, after the touchdown we kicked off and then Dave Elmendorf intercepted.
Instead to giving the ball to the ref, he ran with it to the dressing room.
