Why the Hate for T-Shirt Fans?

I'm sure you realize that the more you win, the more T-Shirt fans your school gets. It kind of goes hand in hand.

So, with that established, would you rather continue losing almost every game so that your fan base is comprised of only Texas A&M graduates or students, as it is now, or would you rather win some games/NC and expand your fan base throughout the country and maybe even the World (kinda like Texas), but in doing so you would have to come to grips with the fact that most of the folks who cheer for you didn't actually go there?

Smart-ass replies are accepted and encouraged, along with serious answers. Thank you for your time.

you fail - A&M has many t-shirt fans who identify with us for many reasons, like our conservative atmosphere, good clean cut honest people, farmers, hard workers.

In the same way, Miami has thugs that follow them and Catholics follow ND and Mormons follow BYU and heauxmeauxs follow t.u. Sure none of them actually went to those schools but they are t-shirt fans because they identify with them so strongly.

Why is it any different than rooting for an NFL or NBA team from a city other than the one you live in? If you adopt a team and stick with it through thick and thin, you're a fan.

Because almost nobody who roots for the Dallas Cowboys ever played/worked for the organization.

So, if someone grew up in Bryan and chose serving in the military over college and never went to college- are they not allowed to be a fan of the ags? How about if they went for one year but had to quit to support their fun babies- are they considered T-shirt fans since they didn't graduate? How about growing up with so much money in a family business (that had prior ags) so no need to go to college but has had football season tickets since 1987 including various donations to the school- are they still a t-shirt fan?

It's just really sad how many people will switch over in a heartbeat because another team is doing well at the time. After Tech beat Texas this year, I saw SO many people that were suddenly Red Raider fans. Hispanics and white trash people. As soon as Tech lost to OU, those people were taking their Tech shirts back to Wal-Mart and buying UT shirts.

Rooting for the powerhouse teams all the time means you are filling a void in your life somewhere. The only solace you get from your sad , pathetic life is seeing "your" team win.

It's even worse with college sports because those of us who have an affiliation with a university have to hear you talk smack every time "your" team wins. It has to be particularly irritating for A&M students and alumni. They have a deep rivalry with Texas. When you work hard to earn a degree from a top-tier university and support a team to the death, only to have a 50 year old janitor with no university affiliation tell you that your team sucks and "his" longhorns are amazing, it has to get under your skin.

Bottom line: We have all worked hard for our degrees (cue the "You were mailed your degree for simply attending Tech"... I don't care. I side with the Aggies here). It's much more difficult to earn a degree and support your team to the death than it is to be a fan of whatever team is "hot" at that moment.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with T-shirt fans, as some of which contribute a lot to the respective school in various forms of support (financial donations, information dissemination, volunteering opportunities, athletic attendance, etc). The problem is, many t-shirt fans are not good ambassadors of the schools they root for. I’m admittedly a pretty big t-shirt Gator fan. I love Gainesville and have always had a fantastic time there while attending Gator sporting events. I’ve never talked down to a FSU fan though (t-shirt or alumnus), never posted on the forums of a Gator rival (FSU, Tennessee, LSU, Georgia, etc). By nature I’m not a trash talker, but even if I was I don’t feel that I have earned the right to infringe on the legitimate rivalry between Florida and those that graduated from other SEC or Florida based institutions.

I dislike the t-shirt fans that are rude, ignorant, or speak down to Texas A&M fans in hopes of gaining rapport with alumni of A&M rivals (Texas Tech, UT, etc). I guess it just seems weird to be told “A&M sucks” by some guy in his 20s that’s pushing carts in a Wal-Mart parking lot. Even worse, some kid with an Associate’s in Art History from ACC telling “Stupid Aggie Jokes” or using terminology such as “fake army” or “gomers”. I’m polite enough not to call them out or question what warrants them to think they’re in a position to question traditions, sport’s progress, etc.

(DISCLAIMER – This aforementioned events are not factual events, but manufactured examples to support a point. Any similarities between these circumstances and actual TexAgs Rivalry Forum t-shirt posters are purely coincidental).

Agreed. Nothing wrong with supporting a school you didn't go to, at least if it's near where you live or where you're from.

However, putting down that school's rivals or talking trash to their alumni makes you a worthless piece of dung

There's 2 kinds of t-shirt fans.

The kind that grew up in Austin or B/CS; The kind that buy a hat, sorry, a t-shirt; maybe take their kids to a game every now and then; root for them while on TV; pick up the paper in the morning and smile while reading about a W. All the while not caring at all that they didn't attend the school. That's the end of it.

Then there's the kind, that most of yall hate, that fill their closets with clothes, hats, shoes from that school; buy fake diplomas and hang it on their walls or send it to websites so they can be accepted by real alumni or students; go to every single game wearing an insulting t-shirt of a rival school that they LITERALLY have no reason to hate-they just hate them because the real students hate them...

Sh*t, I gotta go, but you get my point....

Support all you want, but know your place. You don't have the right as a t-shirt fan to talk trash to anyone other than t-shirt fans of other schools. The rules:

1. People that went to a university can follow said university and talk trash to those who attended rival universities, as well as t-shirt fans of said rival universities.

2. T-Shirts (with or without degrees from lesser schools) are free to pull for any team they choose and to talk trash to other T-Shirts. They should not presume to talk trash to those who actually attended a rival school of their t-shirt institution.

That is of course unless said rival school is Texas Tceh, whereupon all natural born humans are free to point fingers and laugh.

So the guy mowing your lawn in the faded Texas shirt is OK because it is doubtful he even speaks English, much less would ever talk **** about A&M?

He's only wearing that shirt because that's what he got at the border. It's the state of Texas. Why not wear a t-shirt of THE state university to fit in?

God, I hate UT.
