I guess some of you guys got lost about why sips are called sips. It isn't because A&M boys went off to war and Texas fairies ran to Canada.

Texas was regarded as the metropolitan university. The middle and upper class kids went to Texas in Austin and were regarded as Nancy boys who love to drink their tea. While over at the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas, the "good'ole boys" from the county (a lot more poor than the "rich" kids at Texas) learned about engineering and agriculture while getting a military training.

While the war may have had some kind of influence on the t-sip name, it isn't the main reason.

Since more Longhorns fought and died in WW's 1&2 than Aggies, the "we fought and you guys ran" story is a little silly.

The wealthy went to tu and the poor went to A&M (in the early days) is the correct origin of the phrase.

Even as an alum of that awful school in Austin I'd be interested in your sources that back up the claim that more Longhorns fought in died in WWI and WWII.

It wouldn't surprise me if tu did, seeing how such a huge percentage of young men enlisted and how much bigger tu was back then. I'm sure A&M had more officers given that nearly everyone was in full ROTC back then, but I could buy total number.

(disclaimer: the above isn't based on any facts or research whatsoever)

ANY school trying to take ANY type of credit for sacrificing more in battle as part of a rivalry smack endeavor absolutely insults EVERY ONE that fought those wars.

Jock is probably right. In sheer numbers I bet UT was higher, especially in WWII when there was such a mass enlistment after Pearl Harbor. Probably more dropped out to go then Aggies too since the Ags were on course to become officers they likely kept them there early on. But there was almost definitely a much higher percentage of Ags that were officers.

The whole "Longhorns run" came more during Vietnam when obviously UT was much more anti-war than A&M, but still not nearly as completely consumed by ant-war as people might think. Nowhere near the "liberal" schools in other parts of the country.

Ironically during WWI/WWII "The Eyes of Texas" wasn't nearly as d by Ags as it is today. Back then it was still taught in grade school to kids as an unofficial state song. In fact there was no "Texas My Texas" or "Aggie War Hymn" during WWI. And there are accounts of Texas soldiers of all stripes, including Aggies, singing it to captive enemies while they marched.

Here's our number sips:

quote:
World War II

* Nearly 20 thousand Aggies served in World War II, 14 thousand as officers, 29 as generals. The entire graduating classes of 1941 and 1942 enlisted in the military.

* On Corregidor, The Philippines, on San Jacinto Day, April 21, 1942, Major General George F. Moore '08 and 25 other Aggies met for the first Aggie Muster while under Japanese bombardment.

* A number of Aggies participated in the famous Doolittle Raid on Tokyo in April, 1942. Doolittle's second in command was Major John A. Hilger '32.

"No more convincing testimony could be given to the manner in which the men of Texas A&M lived up to the ideals and principles inculcated in their days on the campus than the simple statement that the Congressional Medal of Honor has been awarded to six former students, that 46 took part in the heroic defense of Bataan and Corregidor, and that nearly 700 are on the list of our battle dead."

--Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1946

First, I'm inpressed that so many ags know the origin of teasipper. I hope Jen contributes here, from the other post it appeared she thought the term actually had to do with the WWI/II.

As for Midnight comment:

You are wrong. UT was consumed by anti-war sentiment. It was right up there with Berkeley and Michigan in terms of radicalism and unrest.
I was on campus. Don't assume that young college kids who couldn't even vote yet were being sent off to Vietnam for a war that was was 10 times as unpopular as our current endeavor are wrong. Texas was in line with the other top public universities. Greek life was almost dead back then at UT and even the ones in it had long hair and were liberal.
