Between an uptick in competition and the impact of injuries, Texas A&M has been forced to make some adjustments, and Joni Taylor says the Aggies have adjusted well. The women's basketball head coach joined TexAgs Radio to discuss the latest regarding her program.

Key notes from Joni Taylor interview

  • We played against some good teams over the last couple of weeks that we knew were going to challenge us and expose where we needed to get better. We've gotten better defensively, but we've struggled on the offensive side of the floor. We have also had some injuries, and those haven't helped. We're in a finals break right now where we can go back and tweak our offense. We had five players in practice last week. Yesterday, we had seven. It will look like that for a little. We are tweaking things and have people that aren't playing their natural position. Our goal is about becoming and being better tomorrow than we were today.

  • We had a great fourth quarter against Little Rock. This team has fight in them, and they can adjust. We made adjustments at halftime, and we got better. A lot of our players have not been in those time-and-score situations. It's process-driven right now, and our process got better. It's now about how we can continue what we did in the fourth quarter over the other three. Our execution was good, and that's how our players can gain some confidence.

  • Everybody's goal is to win a championship. If everyone has the same goal, only one team is going to get that. It's more about the process than the results. Will Smith tells a great story about growing up with a father that owned a store, and one summer, he had to rebuild a wall that his dad has knocked down. I think Will was like seven, so he and his siblings were just kids. He talked about how he had a terrible attitude in the first couple of weeks. Finally, his dad had enough. He told him to quit complaining about building a wall. You're laying one brick down as perfectly as you can, and that's your only focus. And then you grab another brick. If you focus on that, one day, you'll have a wall. We tell our team to do one thing as perfectly as they can, and if we can do that, we'll eventually be where we want to be. Will that be this year? This month? Next month? Only time will tell.

  • Janiah Barker has a fractured right wrist and is in an immobilized cast. It’s not a big fracture. We'll evaluate it in a few weeks and try to give it a go. If it's not better, she will need surgery and likely miss the rest of the season.

  • Kay Kay Green missed a ton of time with a concussion early in the year. We're glad to see her back on the floor. She can lock in and defend on both sides of the basketball. She can shoot the three. She's aggressive. It was good to see her get back out there and help on the offensive end.

  • SMU is a really good team. They have played well and beat some tough teams. They're aggressive on both sides of the ball and are very experienced. We have taken last week and this week to focus on us. We'll take a deeper dive into SMU on Friday and Saturday. They're playing at a high level.
