Texas A&M Women's hoops falls to Lady Vols on the road, 82-67
The No. 14 Aggies (17-6, 6-3 SEC) dropped their road game to No. 12 Tennessee 82-67 Thursday night in Knoxville.
Both teams traded points back and forth in the first two quarters. Jasmine Lumpkin scored a career-high 22 points and helped keep the game close by getting off to a hot start. In addition to Lumpkin, Chennedy Carter finished with 25 points and six rebounds, marking the seventh-straight road contest where she has reached the 20-point plateau.
Meanwhile, Danni Williams didn’t get a shot opportunity until the third quarter and finished with just two points for the game.
The Volunteers leaned on Mercedes Russell early and often as she helped facilitate their attack in the paint. Russell recorded her 40th career double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds.
Another difference maker in the game was the defense and scoring of Jaime Nared for Tennessee. Nared was matched up against Carter, forcing turnovers and holding her to two points in the final quarter. She finished her night with 23 points and found her way to the free throw line eight times — making six of her eight foul shots. Additionally, Tennessee’s Anastasia Hayes shot 6-9 from the field and scored 16 points.
The Aggies ran into foul trouble late in the game and had a difficult time scoring points. Anriel Howard fouled out with 2:32 left in the game and Carter fouled three times, two of which were in the fourth quarter. In the final quarter, A&M was outscored 25-8 and saw the Volunteers pull away. Tennessee used A&M’s foul trouble to its advantage, making 11 of 16 total foul shots.
The Aggies will return to action Sunday against Auburn at Reed Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on the SEC Network.
