I have an antique oil painting we purchased pre-divorce in an estate auction in Virginia in the 1990's. We were told it is from the 1600's. I found an appraiser here in Austin that said they would evaluate it, but they want $750 to look at it. Is there a better way to have it looked at? Thanks for any guidance, I don't know much about art

If I were in your shoes, would find a museum for the style/period. You can loan to them for a year. If not real, you'll find out quick. If real, you may be in touch with an expert to better understand the piece before committing to an appraisal.

If you know the name of the artist you can subscribe to AskArt or some similar site for a month, research your piece, then cancel. They list many artists and many types of art. No guarantee you'll find yours on this site but there's a pretty good chance. https://www.askart.com/index.aspx

Whoever Hunter Biden uses to sell his artwork. 10% may have to go to the big guy.
