I had the beta downloaded with my last windows update, and I think it's pretty slick. It's just going to get better too. Is there anyway this doesn't massively damage Google? You can bypass using their search engine entirely for a significant portion of internet requests now with Microsoft integrating this into your task bar.

This AI race is going to massively reward the biggest hardware providers. With Microsoft owning the commercial world, I don't see how it doesn't end up trickling over into the retail/consumer industry, especially with how broken Google's attempts at AI have been viewed thus far.

Google search seems unusable now. Top results are either sponsored or AI generated and you a page deep before you see anything relevant.

I haven't used Google in several years so can't speak to it but after reading some articles on them, they are a ****show of a company right now. Successful despite themselves and basically surviving off of their own halo effect from past success.

edit: I use Bing which is CoPilot and it's pretty badass. Zero reason to use anything else.

From what I understand most of the alternative search engines piggyback off Google's indexing and the results are repackaged with a different skin. Bing is supposed to have its own indexing but still uses Google to some extent. Brave does it's own indexing and seems like a functional alternative but haven't messed around with it much.

Google has gotten progressively worse over the past year though especially with the AI generated content. It sends results with a known and seemingly reputable top level domain, but it looks completely AI generated in and in response to your specific search. You'll typically see the first couple paragraphs semi-relevant but then it trails off into obvious AI gibberish. As far as I can tell it looks like the owners of these domains are allowing this just to feed traffic to their site. So you are getting a search result of something completely AI generated just to drive traffic to the domain and get a click.

Seems like this captures clicks from younger people and also less tech savvy older people. The younger people were born into 'just google it' and don't know any better. The older people tend to just not know any better and have no reason to not trust or even question the veracity of search results.

It's yet to bee seen whether AI tools will help with this or make the problem worse.

Can AI separate the wheat from the chaff without human intervention or will it be more of the same?

Is anyone here actually willing to pay for Copilot though, agree that it's pretty cool from the free version but no way I'm going to pay for it when that day comes.

Depends on what it does for me by then.

But even then, it'll be bundled in M365 subscriptions anyway.
