I'm curious to see what folks on the board like to collect.

This doesn't have to be purely from an investment angle, but considering that we are on the B&I board I'd like the thread to lean more in that direction.

What are some things that you dabble in that have appreciated in value over time?

The collectable markets out there can be a rewarding place for a keen eye.

16th-17th C European arms and armor. I wouldnt recommend it unless someone is willing to put in a lot of time learning. Like many antiques, the market is loaded with con men and fakes. The market is also really thin so liquidating can be slow.

Sats.

Sports cards. This was mainly during my childhood. Still own all of them and have them in a display case (some of the best ones) displayed in the entry way.

Thousands of worthless baseball cards.
A boxful of Aggie football cards I actually care about. Trying to collect rookie cards of every Aggie NFL player.
Nothing that's gonna help me retire.
Although these two are priceless.

Yeah, I have thousands in my attic. I'd wager some may be worth money as they were handed down from my grandmother. It was the main thing we had in common and everytime I went to visit I'd take my newest cards to show her and she'd usually give me some to take home.

She was obsessed with Nolan Ryan (lived in Alvin) so I have a lot of his cards.

Also have a signed Hank Aaron ball and card from her, that one is displayed in the office.

I collect weapons and drinking cups when I travel. I try to get cultural / historical knives/swords/bows/arrows and beer stein / horn cups. I don't shop for proper antiques for future resale value, but I love adding foreign weapons to my walls and cool cups to the glass cabinets in my bar.

Do any of y'all collect stamps? On a base level they seem like a safe thing to collect as far as value goes. The price of them is always increasing.

Now collecting rare stamps is a different ballgame

Silver. Any kind of silver, bars, coins, rounds what we. It satisfies my urge to buy crap but I'm not really parting with my money. It's great.

Watches. I pick up a new one every few months, only buy used when I can find a deal that I like, and generally view them as a cash alternative. I'm not banking on any gains from them, but it gives me some comfort that I can get my money back out of them if I need it.

Do you have Johnny's version? The "Never Gave a **** , Still Dont"?
"Cal (9-3) vs. Texas A&M (9-3). On the list of rare sights in Southern California, a team running the option -- as the Aggies like to do with QB Stephen McGee -- ranks right up there with real breasts and 12 inches of snow." Stewart Mandel CNNSI

I don't collect anything because I'm pretty simple and hate keeping stuff. About the only thing I would start collecting is watches but that's quite an expensive hobby.

Having said that, I briefly collected comic books as a kid and still have around 100 comics I've continued to move with me over the years.

And I'm going to inherit a substantial bottle collection from my mom that was put together by my grandfather. That stresses me out because I have zero room to store any of it so will be looking to liquidate it.

Vinyl records. I don't search out collectible stuff or valuable records. Just buy the music I like and usually get one anytime I see someone play live. Used to get t-shirts or coozies but those eventually get lost or worn out. Nice to have a vinyl to remind you of a good show! Most of the shows I go to are smaller artists so it's not out of the ordinary to have the musician signing records after you buy them. The smaller the show, the better your odds. Went to an Adam Hood show in Houston and he was running his own square reader and manning the merch table himself!

Bourbon. Up to 50+ bottles

I'd like to say I "collect" pre-64 winnies, but I'm not sure two counts as a collection. I also have a .22lr Model 52 bolt action

I wouldn't call myself a collector, but I have been looking at some old books recently and have been surprised just how little value even books from the mid 1800s have. If it's not a first edition or signed, many go for less than $20. That's not something I would have expected prior to looking.

I have a coin collection I started in the 80's... have done zero with it the last 25 years other than throw in random coins I find now & then. (Foreign stuff, pre-64 silver, wheat pennies, etc.)

Now I don't collect knives or guns, but I did happen to have quite a few of both.
(Until I lost the guns on that transatlantic ocean voyage)

What do I not collect? I've got 1/64 die cast cars, hats, watches, guns, paper airplane books, knives, flashlights, coffee cups and old road maps. That's probably a pretty good start.

I collect Texas A&M ticket stubs.

I am currently looking for a 1944 orange bowl and a 1981 independence bowl ticket and a lot of old tu tickets. I like the art and history that goes with them. Old or new it doesn't matter I like them all.

Comics. I have since the 90s but recently started going back prior to that time into the 60's and 70's
