My kids have been raving about the TEMU app. Basically it's a bunch of steeply discounted crap from China. I decided to give it a try and was pretty impressed by the amount of goods they offer. Seems to have everything you can think of. I decided to buy a bunch of fishing tackle that comes from there anyway. Saved about 70-80%! Much of it's the same but is just rebranded.

I don't have any analytical skills but this seems like it will eventually take a lot of Amazon's market share when it becomes mainstream. The app has a lot of goofy "spin the wheel" opportunities for further discounts but Asian culture loves that kind of stuff.

I cannot offer any in depth analysis on the stock, but when my kids get excited about something I tend to listen more closely after missing out on several investing opportunities.

Just wanted to bring this one to the board to see if I should run away!

OP- Interesting observation regarding TEMU and the youts. I've seen advertisements in various areas but dismissed them. Might do a little digging into this today.

I'm pretty sure this is Temu's business strategy.

Politics aside, china is struggling. Their economy isn't picking up like they thought it would. Unemployment is high, they've just stopped reporting some numbers like young adult unemployment.

Next, you have the various back in forth between the us and china in the ownership of data in these apps. How Will that effect this growth? How will china cracking down on foreign companies and charging them with espionage effect it?

Finally, a side effect of Covid is a drastic increase in interest in near shoring. There will always be a market for cheap consumer goods. But is that market already filled, see Walmart, Amazon, etc. Will the various above points limit the market share a Chinese app/company can gain?

Wife asked me about TEMU....

From the research I found - it looks like they are big on taking your data and selling that as the primary profit driver for the enterprise.

"Temu makes money with your data. The app requests 24 permissions on your device, including access to your Wi-Fi network info, Bluetooth, photos and videos, contact info and payment details."

I am way more protective of my data vs my wife and not sure I'd be as willing to trade cheap chinese goods for them to have all my data but thats tough when they just have to get my wife to give it all up instead.

used to use AliExpress to get everything cheaper than Amazon/Ebay, now use Temu to get everything even cheaper and way faster than AliExpress

I've bought stuff off it for the kids. Generally consistent with descriptions as far as functionality and quality is as expected. Everything is just very small. Like much smaller than the pictures make it look

bottom line for me is there are certain stocks I won't buy

I don't buy casino or gambling stocks
I don't buy stocks that alcohol is their main product
I don't buy stocks that are owned by the Chinese (we know the CCP has their hand it in)

I'm not saying I'm holier than thou, but this is where I draw the line. I have real concerns about China, they are clearly our number one enemy and seek to do our country harm.

I needed about 8 of them. I paid $1.80 ea. shipped. Same thing on amazon was like $7 ea. So it was a no brainer. I didn't care about brand or anything, it was stainless steel that's really all that mattered. I'm using them as a wind guard on my blackstone.

I will consider temu as an option in the future for something where quality (and shipping time) is not of high importance.

Everyone will have a different opinion of when quality is important and to what degree, though.

For example, I probably wouldn't buy anything food related, like your picture. My sister bought some little toddler versions of yeti/rtic like tumblers from Amazon and later got a notice to throw them away because they contained lead.

I'd assume the risk is even higher on a site like this.

Edit: using as a wind guard like you are makes it irrelevant. But if you were using for their intended purpose

exactly, my intended use made the quality or craftsmanship irrelevant.

This is the case for a lot things people buy for different purposes.

I see they have like $3 hats, some with american flags on them or camo.
I wear a lot of hats, and many of them get gross after a few years.. I'd totally be willing to spend $3 on a hat I'm gonna wear while doing yard work, instead of $25+ here locally in town.

My wife's hand mixer went out. Paid $7 for a new one that is also offered at Walmart for $30. Free shipping too.
