FWIW my dad runs a fairly large bank. I've been looking at getting either a gently used or new truck now (old one has 300k miles on it and is an 08 and to put it nicely - it's very tired) and he told me that they're planning for a big wave of repo's in Q1 of next year, so I'll have to wait it out.

No offense, but I think even Ray Charles could have seen that coming. Question is, how high are financing rates going to go?

I think rates are gonna be set, but length is gonna extend out. Those morons who just care about "keepin muh payments low" are gonna be paying out for the next 120 months more often than not.

Lol at this thread. So many folks have no idea how broke we are as a country and how unwise the majority is.

I used to hire front line workers for $15/16 hr and they would work 60-70 hours a week. Most of them had the baddest ass trucks that the dealerships would sell.

Most of them owed child support and the rest had a household of people to take care of. They don't have discretionary income to go on vacations, contribute to 401k, sign up for life insurance or send their kinds to Primrose. Assisting them with their direct deposits you would see that they only had $125 to their name. The discipline isn't there and it was not ever taught.

Good for you for saving and maxing out your retirement plans and be fortunate that someone taught you to save and do so.

Some of you sound like you wouldn't spare a dime to help your mom if she was in need and frankly I feel sorry for you.

What the hell are you talking about? No one taught me to save. This is a values problem, I.e. GREED.

If you want to lecture the people who actually save and live within our means by acting like we are so privileged, then you've come to the wrong place.

But you know what?. I DONT CARE ABOUT THOSE WHO ARE IN DEBT. If they have to suffer to learn a lesson, then there is nothing wrong with that at all. In fact, everyone needs to suffer to learn a thing or two.

Haha, key word "some" of you… I'm not standing up for those that make terrible decisions. I want a badass truck but I don't have one.

Simply pointing out that some are so out of touch with the lower class. Not everyone has been contributing to their 401k since they took Intro to Finc at Mays. Relax.

It's been said multiple times over on this thread that the posters on this board aren't a representation of the majority of Americans…..

And I guess I sensed that there were still some that were lost in the reality that not every household is pulling $400k a year. A question was proposed and I shared my firsthand experience with what reality is outside of the B&I board and on the front lines. I didn't say anything that isn't fact.

Even the "poor" can save and not spend every dime. Agreed few do, including the "rich."

I never got the impression this thread was about the lower class or front line workers who are paid hourly.

I've always thought that it's more been about the educated/professional middle to upper middle class who seem to spend money like their last name is Bezos of Kardashian.

Your example was your frontline worker making $32K and driving a $60K truck. That's not going to make anyone sympathetic to their plight. I think people here are smart enough to realize it's very hard to save and grow wealth on the average household income. That doesn't excuse poor decision making.
CuriousAg

Hah, the question was "Is everyone in debt?"

How do you interpret "everyone" when the first handful of pages were insinuating that "everyone" is pulling mid 6-figs.

I'm not trying to get anyone to feel sorry for anyone. Those workers aren't making wise decisions. I answered the question and shared my experience as most here have never worked around the front lines, which makes up the MAJORITY of America ="everyone"

Clearly took it too far with talking about sparing a helping hand. I still stand by it.

I was saving as much as I could in my 401k in my first job making $25k. You can do it if you want to.

Read it like that if you want, but we can agree to disagree.

When I comment/make observations about those around me, I know that because of where I work and live, they probably are pulling 6 figures. So, the discussion is about my perceived financial "peers".

I'm not trying to belittle anyone in the lower or working class. I am curious how people with a similar socio-economic status as mine can seemingly afford a lifestyle that is more first class than economy.

It's one of two answers: ether people make a lot more money than I think they do, or (as the thread title says) most of them are in debt.

For me personally, people who are in the top 90% of earners should be embarrassed to carry consumer/cc debt that they can't pay off each month. But that's just me.

Does "mid 6 figures" mean 150k or 550k (halfway between 100k and 1M)?

Data Point: I recently used a CC to purchase a Microsoft 365 subscription. I was initially worried because the internet is slow out here in Doss but it seems to be working fine. My ranch is about 8 ac and I was able to connect my pellet grill to the internet and control it from my Tesla which is a neat trick. I have been happy with Outlook so far. I was emailing my buddy a chili recipe the other day and had some trouble attaching the picture of the beans I use, but it eventually worked. I have also been able to pay of the subscription each month and do not carry a balance on my CC.

Excellent post. Well done.

But you need a bigger ranch. Eight acres is embarrassing.

Edit to add ... unless it's just your weekend ranch, and your M-F ranch is a decent size.

But were you eating a sausage kolache? And do you do any experiments on the ranch, like model planes taking off from a treadmill?

All of those things could be tax write offs and help you stay out of debt.

Interesting thread and great topic OP. I do believe younger generation is in a lot of debt (car loans), seems like everybody I know who gets a new job after college goes and buys a new truck/car to keep of the social status

I got a neighbor that rents a 3200 a month house and they drive a Bently and one of those expensive SUVs

Me and my wife's cars added together cost a lot less than 1 of theirs and we have a mortgage that costs $600 a month less than their rent.

Another neighbor revealed a few weeks ago they have 30K in credit card debt. The wife is a stay at home mom
