We have a cc from usaa that gave us 2.5% on everything. No fee. No limit. It was great. We have just been notified they are changing to 1.5% but will keep us at 2.5 through the end of the year.

So, any recommendations on current cc? We spend significant amount of money on this (6 figures per year), paid off each month. We don't travel a ton. My wife will not use various cc to maximize returns (gas, eating out, etc…).

I'm a little depressed right now. That card was perfect for us.

Look at Navy Fed cards if you qualify for membership.

There are a few cards on here that do 2% back across the board and some others that do up to 6% depending on the purchase type so I would study your purchase history and align it to the best fit. There are quite a few cards beyond just straight cash back cards as well if you want to research beyond that.

WF Active Cash is the best flat rate cash back card on the market currently.

Eff. I have the same card and hadn't seen the notification. Just confirmed the same. Very disappointing bc it was the only reason I kept that card. I'll be closing it at the end of the year and pushing my spend to sapphire for miles I suppose for a blowout vacation for the family sometime in the future.

I received the same notification last week. I'm pretty upset about it too. It was the best cashback card on the market. I previously used (and still have) the Amex Cash that pays 1, 2 or 3% cash back. I'm considering upgrading to the preferred cash card and paying the $95 annual fee to get 1, 3 or 6% cash back. Not sure where you're located but RBFCU has a 2% cashback card too if you qualify for membership. I'm still looking around for what card I'll start using but since we'll get the 2.5% with usaa until the end of the year so hopefully I'll find something good before then.

I'm just bummed I didn't get that card when it was available! Came out right after I stopped seriously looking into more CCs and now I hear about it, it turns out it's getting discontinued :/

You lucky dogs!

I have the navy fed cash rewards that pays 1.75 percent back with no fee.
Then the Amex blue cash preferred that pays 6 percent on hrocieries and 3 percent on has with a 95 dollar annual.
And for traveling I have the chase United explorer card, which gets me a free checked bag, 2 club passes a year, miles on purchases and priority boarding. Think that one is 95 a year too.

We switched to the Fidelity Card. Still get 2% cash back, just goes towards cash in the brokerage trading account.

Wish I would have had the 2.5% cash back card from USAA though. That would be awesome.

I feel like it's either 1.5-2% cash back on everything. Or you're playing the wheel of cash back game where some things get 6% and some get 1%.

This is what I'm doing. It's the next best option out there. Really disappointed USAA is doing away with it.

Do you know if you get rewards for tax payments on the Fidelity card? I was paying my property tax bill via the USAA card, but USAA is also putting an end to rewards for tax payments.

I believe so? I've not tried with property taxes but I just paid my federal taxes but did so via ACH vs paying 1.87% card processing and getting 2% cash back. Wasn't worth it for me.

Double Cash from Citi.
2% cash back.
Although they recently changed to involve "points" in some way, but I think that can still be converted to cash, so I didn't give it much more thought.

Your point conversion could be less than the straight cash back.

That's the missing element in this discussion but I think it's generally true that points to cash conversion is generally less than straight cash back. I would do the math though to confirm.

A "point" equals one cent. You get 2% if you pay your card off every month. Call it points, call it cash back, or call it whatever. It's 2% back...amounts to 2 dollars for every 100 dollars...no limits, no categories. Easy to convert to cash (I just do a statement credit) whenever you want. I've had this card for years and been very happy.

Right, I've done a cash out one year and a statement credit one year. However, it can be more complicated than that. The point valuation is all over the map for cards. Many are worth more than 1 cent per point. Some are up to 2 cents per point.

It comes down to how you want to convert those points. If you want straight cash I'm going to assume the cash back specific cards are your best conversion rate, but if you want to use points for something else than cash there are better cards out there. In other words, you would be better off converting the points to travel, experiences, flights, etc vs cashing out and then applying cash to same endeavor.

I won't attempt to figure that out. That's what thepointsguy.com is for!

Apparently this is the support group for people losing their USAA Limitless Cashback Rewards Card at the end of 2022.

I was Citi Double Cash prior to 2017 when I received the USAA card. I'll be getting the PayPal 2% Cashback Mastercard as a replacement for the USAA card.

2 thoughts on this change...

1. I knew the cashback rate was too good to last and have been waiting for USAA to alter the deal ever since they quickly shut down applications for the card 6 months after announcing it. That said, this was one of the few things tying me to USAA. It's probably time to start looking for a new primary banking relationship.

2. I wonder if I'll ever be wealthy enough not to care about about a couple hundred basis points in credit card rewards and simplify to a single card?

I use Alliant's Visa Signature. 2.5% up to 10K a month and 1.5% after 10K in a month. It's not well known and you need to keep some cash with them to get the Tier 1 cash back.

https://www.alliantcreditunion.org/bank/visa-signature-card#features

Be prepared to get the old style banker rundown on your finances/FICO but once you get beyond that it's a great card and bank. Alliant also caters to kids accounts which is really nice for us as we work to teach them the basics of personal finance.

It sounds like this change is probably due to the fact that they can't afford to pay it anymore considering their very public scandal this past week. Which also, coincidentally, may coincide with the opinions of many on here who have said USAA has fallen far from who they used to be. I've heard the latter for several years now on here.

Savor Card is 4% on dining/entertainment, 3% on groceries and 1% on the rest. With the way we use it I bet we average 3%+ back on it.

I have the Amazon/Chase CC. 5% back on things bought from Prime, 2% gas/groceries, 1% everything else. It's linked directly to my Chase account so I can pay it off all from the same place. Easy.

They also run specials every day on various Amazon items that are 10-15% back.

And no annual fee so I got it just to link to Amazon since we use it so much even though I already have most of the Chase cards. (Reserve, freedom plus, and freedom flex)

Looked yesterday and after three months had $60 in rewards.

Get it if you shop Amazon.

Thanks for the heads up. I still have this card but almost all my spend is now on chase sapphire reserve. As others have said - with the card benefit going away and all my investments migrating to Schwab (seemingly for the best) I am failing to see why I should hang onto my usaa banking relationship.

You spend six figures on your credit card and are upset about losing ~$1k in cash back? Nice problem to have I guess.

Well, if $1K isn't a big deal to you, I'll give you my venmo and you can make up the difference

We refuse to use Capital One - very bad experiences with their (lack of) customer service with my FIL's accounts after he died, and won't use Citi because of some of their political stances that they are vocal about.

I am a numbers guy and with my Alliant card I've made 14% more in cash back vs a 2% card over a three years. >20K a month is where the 2% no fee cards make more sense but I don't consistently spend that on credit.

I see so many dumb things done by investors to make money that keeping that "~$1k in cash back" should be table stakes if you have good credit and you are a credit card deadbeat like me. As they say - easy money.

One drawback is that whenever my wife has a potential purchase on Amazon and sees our cash back amount, it now becomes a justified purchase... whatever crap it is.

No way does ours ever get to $60...$6 maybe
