One thing I've wondered about recently is how the counter service folks are being paid.

Traditionally, I never even considered tipping them, but in the "Square Era", everyone with an iPad payment system expects 18%-20%-25% it seems. These guys are now getting tipped out pretty decently it would seem, but probably not enough to cover the delta between minimum wage and $2.12 consistently (assuming they're tipping out the kitchen and bus boys).

So are they getting paid $7.25 + tips now? If so, that's a pretty kickass job for a high school kid. Sit there and take orders but never actually have to refill drinks or serve anyone, but still clear $10-15/hour.

This is the crap that pisses me off. This is a quick transaction; I ask for x, you provide x, and there is no additional service given. The counter/register tip feature is absurd. It makes you go out of your way to figure out how not to leave a tip.

Restaurant service is different but the Apple counter crap needs to go.
Agree completely. Over the holidays my daughter and I went into an ice cream spot to get a scoop and walk around. Ordered one scoop cup, one scoop cone and handed my Amex. The girl flips the screen around which had three buttons for tips 20% - 25% - 30% and nothing obvious to decline or enter another amount. Was ridiculous. Seriously, 20-30% expected tip for an ice cream cone. Should have used cash. But, this tipping expectations (almost demand) and the industry justification is ridiculous.

So did you leave a tip?

Yes, because I choose my battles - I was with my teen daughter having a great evening and the 20% was about 2.50 - I would have thrown a buck at least in the tip jar. Also, the girl at the counter was maybe 19 - yeah, like I'm going to get into it with her. If I had seen a manager in the store and I could have had a quiet moment I likely would have said that was ridiculous.

Judge me however you will - yes, I'm complaining on an anonymous posting board, but, no good would come from arguing with the 19 year old girl that evening. Like I said if a manager was around I would have taken a moment to quietly say something. I also think this is the exact situation that the system puts you in. I also watched the family behind me and the mom also had the look of "what? Well, ummm, okay, ..... " she also whispered something to her husband right after and he also was like "wtf?"

All of the complaints about the tip option for typically "non-tipped" services tend to always end with a large % of the people tipping.

It's absolutely a guilt/expectation thing.

Sometimes we frame it in a "we're helping out those employed in less fortunate positions than we are" fashion, but reality is many of the people who succumb to the guilt/expectation of tipping are those that are in poor financial positions themselves. I've watched friends that I know are carrying a 4-5 figure credit card debt tip simply due to expectation.

You always hear servers throw out the "if you can't afford to tip X% then you can't go out to eat" line - but strangely you never hear the actual manager or owner throw that line out -- because they want your money for their product whether you are chipping in the additional income assistance to their employees or not.

It's a racket. I'm guilty of participating in it, but I acknowledge what it is.

More like they probably do it because they don't really think when they spend money.

True, but if there was no tip option on the POS or the receipt and instead a tip jar I'd bet they'd be a lot less likely to tip because the expectation isn't implied and there's less stigma involved in not participating.

I really would love to see the DoorDash/Favor/Regular-Delivery-Guy tip comparisons because that would be a perfect case study on how much more the expectation of a tip with or without actually having to face the stigma involved in not tipping varies.

I leave $0 in this situation and not once has a fast casual employee like this ever said anything to me and I would have no problem if they did responding that serving me an ice cream cone is their job and doesn't merit a tip. Some of you are way to worried what others think of you.
Well, you obviously didn't read my post prior as I specifically said the screen presented no obvious option to leave no tip or enter a different amount. But, carry on.....

That's odd. Tip for next time: Usually the way to put a $0 tip on the ones that are not obvious is to click the "Other" or "Custom" amount option and enter $0.00 in.
