We're potentially looking for someone for a BD/reservoir type roll but the job would be in Midland. Small, lean operator currently running 2-3 rigs.

I appreciate all of the responses!

Sims - Unfortunately I am very far from that part of the business.

Comeby - I am in a stable position at a stable operator, so I am in no rush to leave. While I am waiting for the right opportunity, I am also trying to be proactive in my search.

Westicles - sounds like a great gig, but the fam wants to stay in Houston.

We've fabbed material up to 8" thick, OD 14' (maybe a little more to stretch here but 14 is the reliable number), Length 200', Weight 150T (max capabilities, not all same vessel)

We mostly produce skidded 3 phase separators with all measurement and controls incorporated. We also do distillation columns, pig traps, slug catchers, pipe skids, header skids, insulation, internal/external coating, pwht, carbon & stainless

in-house engineering

U+R stamps, national board registered

For what it's worth, we don't stock any equipment - everything is build to order.

For those of you who have made the switch from the service side of the industry to an operator, do you have any regrets or is there anything you wish you had known before making the switch?

10000000% operator

I made the switch in 2018 and wish I had explored it 5 years earlier.

Being the owner is better than being the vendor.

It's a hard transition to make. Most operators don't hire senior service hands anymore other than for field supervision jobs in your area of expertise. But yes, 100% make the move if you can. Made mine over 20 years ago.

Anyone have insight into the Shell Woodcreek sale and leaseback? Implies layoffs or heavy consolidation of office space.

Heavy consolidation is what is being shared, and I think it makes sense. The campus is dead most of the time

it's a consolidation, although this is more possible due to post covid ways of working and non-stop internal reorganizations/downsizing. plan seems to be to occupy/lease back two of the buildings and market the rest

wow - will this work!!?

The U.S. plans to use its newfound assertion of control over billions of barrels of Venezuelan crude oil to refill the nation's depleted emergency reserve, President Donald Trump said Aug. 30.

"One of the things I am going to do with the Venezuelan Oil is fill up the Strategic National Reserves," Trump said in a Truth Social post, in which he blamed Joe Biden, his predecessor as president, for emptying the reserve.

"The 'topping out' process will begin very shortly, and is a Gift from Venezuela to the People of the United States," Trump said.

Venezuela has the world's largest proven oil reserves, but "65 billion barrels" doesn't mean 65 billion barrels of cheap oil waiting to come out of the ground.

A huge portion is extremely heavy crude, particularly in the Orinoco Belt.

All the while, Venezuela's oil infrastructure has deteriorated enormously, which is why the administration's plan calls for potentially $100 billion of investment just to rebuild and expand production.

After we spend a substantial amount rebuilding infrastructure, what's to stop a new Venezuelan government coming in and saying, "The previous government had no authority to grant Americans 100-year concessions. This was an unconstitutional giveaway of Venezuelan resources." It happened in 2007 (essentially).

Venezuelan opposition figures are already arguing that the arrangement is unconstitutional (https://www.reuters.com/legal/litigation/experts-lawyers-puzzled-over-us-venezuela-oil-deal-call-contract-transparency-2026-08-31/?utm_source=chatgpt.com).

Thanks for posting this. I have been wondering about some of the same issues with reluctance of U.S. explorers to invest massively in a country known to expropriate that investment.

Additionally, this heavy crude, from my understanding and reading, is mostly present in oil sands, not conventional reservoirs. Unlike the Canadian oil sands, it is extremely heavy and requires a significant amount of pressurization to bring it to surface. I did read that the production costs for Venezuelan oil could be as high as $80/bbl, compared to as low as $50 for Canadian oil. I would appreciate input from anyone in the industry as to how accurate these figures are. If true, it isn't hard to understand why almost everyone but Chevron pulled out of the region, and it will take a lot of convincing for them to re-enter..

There's a tiny bit of "all oil is bad" in here but this seemed to be a good overall explanation.

i understood that the SPR can't be filled with the VZ stuff. it's not within spec required to go into it.

If it's a substitute or can be blended with other grades for refining then potentially the stuff that would have gone to the refinery can go to the spr. Not directly fungible but potentially a big lever.

why would someone spend the effort to blend for storage when they could instead refine it and take advantage of the market spreads?

also, the amount you could store by blending is not endless. only up to a certain amount,a few percent, again because of specs

Blending replaces the SPR acceptable grades being consumed by the refiner. The SPR acceptable grade is stored rather than refined. That was my scenario, not storing blended grades.

As a reminder, the US government used to take their royalty of oil in kind so they could store it in the SPR.

Technically you could do that with "new" oil to the markets.

But VZ oil, I highly doubt that amount actually exists. Much like SA's numbers.
