Also, holy crap that train is moving fast for going through a town. In Houston they move but significantly slower.

There are many culpable people in this. Totally crazy and totally preventable if proper actions were taking place.

Not sure if true but they said it was hung up on the track for over an hour and nobody thought to call the railroad to let them know.

Totally incompetent journey planning on many levels. Multiple companies are getting sued.

The old Union Pacific doesn't come by here much anymore.

Damn, that is bad... There is a number to call on a box at every crossing. First thing you should do if ever stuck on a track.

My FIL (retired from BNSF as an engineer) had several road crossing accidents, mostly rural crossings with someone pulling in front of the train just before the train reached the crossing. There were instances when he would set the brake and jump from the engine (18-wheeler stuck on tracks) and set the brake and ride it out (passenger cars). In one instance a truck tanker pulled on the tracks as the train approached and there was no time to react other than set the brake and get down. He figured he was dead since they were hauling tank cars as well. Turns out the 18 wheeler they hit was hauling salt water.

Bro is standing 50 feet from tracks as it starts derailing like Harrison Ford in Fugitive. I'd be running for the hills.
Terrible that people died and egregious if that truck was sitting there for an hour. Horrible.

Spoke to someone today who works for UP and knew both who died. The train was going 75 mph, which is crazy to me through Pecos. There were no seatbelts in the locomotive, the conductor was bounced around all over inside and killed, the Engineer jumped (he's who passed at the hospital. The train also has a device that sends a signal out to make sure the track is clear, the signal was sent from the train, but for some reason it did not return back to the train, so it malfunctioned.

Truck was on the track for over an hour, called 911, police on site, and no one notified UP's dispatch that it was stuck on the tracks.

Ultimately this will fall on the trucking company and pilot car company, but it sounds like there were failures all over the place including TXDMV for sending it that route.

Canada rigs go into the field once the grounds are frozen over. This is why you see this every winter up there.

They are going after the dark fleet. That means higher demand for non-sanctioned crude. Tanker rates up too today.

The last Trump administration and India had a pretty good relationship, didn't they?

they did. but, in general, the Indians march to their own drum. that drum being economics. they seemingly will do any deal with anyone for the right price. which has me thinking, Trump spoke with Modi.

We were just talking about this. What does Trump want out of Canada? He's clearly angling for something, but I have no idea what it could be.

Or he's just not a strategic genius. Just an overconfident narcissist with only a surface level of understanding the issues.

Most exposed places to this in order:
The Midwest (think Suncor and their Denver refinery in particular but everywhere from Rockies to Appalachia)
Gulf Coast refiners that need access to reliable heavy bbls
New York Harbor when the NE is short on bbls (Jones Act + tariffs on Canadian RP is quite the combo there)
California refineries that were starting to switch to WCS from TMX and away from ME crude

All in all, a lot of market inefficiencies coming Jan 20th and the incremental bbl is about to get much more expensive in America. And the incremental bbl sets the price. Also expect yields and financing costs to increase with this inflation. Only partial relief I see is USD/CAD exchange rate is probably strong USD.

He's talking to traders who'll make more money by injecting either tariff's in the equation OR FUD, which drives up price.

Only to have other yell at him because now gas is more expensive?

I don't think he's doing this just because. I think he's doing this because he doesn't understand how bad of an idea this is, and because he thinks that he can beat Canada into submission on something along the spectrum of becoming a US state/turning the trade deficit to 0 because trade deficits are "subsidies". I'd bet he hasn't personally committed to what his end game is but wants to see how things play out when he applies pressure.

But that doesn't change the fact that he clearly and repeatedly has shown no ability to understand how trade works, develop a multi-lateral global strategy, and doesn't remotely seem to grasp the consequences of tariffs.

Call me old fashioned but bullying our allies in this period of geopolitical fragility seems counterproductive to me. Worse yet, Americans will wear this tax increase far in excess of the value of the tariff due to efficiency loss and the marginal bbl raising prices across the board.

Just curious, why is this the case? Oil prices have been hovering around $70-80 for the past 2 years or so. With Trump in office, oil companies will presumably get more favorable treatment/regulations for the next 4 years.
