How's the commute from Denver to Vail for a ski weekend?

i haven't lived here yet during ski season, but from what i've heard from my relatives...

It can vary a huge amount, with two main factors, weather and what time you leave.

even with clear skies, going saturday morning or coming back sun late afternoon.. i've heard it's bad.

add a snow storm in there, i've heard nightmares of 6 hours.

but leave friday afternoon/evening or butt crack of dawn sat and come back sun morning or really late sunday night, you'll miss most traffic.

I agree with 62strat for the most part. From my 3 years living here, I have to say the traffic on 70 is a little exaggerated. It is mainly bad in January/February, and on weeekends when the mountains have been dumped on recently.

In general, the traffic will not be too bad if you leave Denver by 6:15-6:30 in the morning (about 1:45 or 2 hours to Vail). I often ski early, then head back to Denver by 12-1 on Saturday, and the drive back is not bad. If you're coming back on Sunday, I'd leave by mid-morning or noon. Of course, the drive is going to be slower if there is a bad snowstorm.

Oh yeah, I ski A-Basin a lot on Friday afternoon, and I can't remember ever having a problem with traffic.

Now for the summer, Friday afternoon traffic on 70 can be horrible.

I will be in Keystone Saturday with a group of a few aggies. We plan on hitting the slopes when they open and then finding a tv to sit in front of at 10am with the game on. You can email me at username @ gmail if you want to try and meet up.
After the game I am sure we will go back out on the mountain for a few more afternoon runs.

I get off work at 9am but they aren't allowing employees to ski this weekend. But if I see ya, I will give you a howdy.

If it wasn't opening weekend, I'd love to meet up at Keystone to ski and watch the Aggies. I just don't want to take a chance with bad lines like A-Basin had last Friday. Have fun.

I can't read this thread anymore. Too jealous of easy accessibility to skiing.

Quite a few cars when I left this morning. Groomers were looking good.

Literally. After living 22 years in Houston, yet taking about a dozen vacations to CO throughout those, years I thought to myself, why not just f-in live there?

2 quit jobs, one sold house, and 1000 miles later.. here we are!

jobs are now had, and house is on the way.. just where we left off

Denver: awesome weather, no humidity, mountains, four seasons, a lot to do, and of course Von Miller.

Moving here was a fantastic decision.

Probably at home, by myself. We lose literally every time I have people over to watch the Ags.

However, I will probably go skiing Saturday AM and will represent with Aggie gear. And if the Ags win, I will go out Sat night and tear it up.

how will it work with the feds? aren't they free to come in and smash?
62strat

legally, yes.. but mots think the fed won't mess with individuals. They can go after the growers/manufacturers/distributors/retailers..

Curious myself to see how it all meshes.

But, you can grow it at home, and smoke it at home, and no way in hell some fed is gonna come knocking on your day.

can't smoke it in public, just like regular smoking (the entire state is smoke free indoors), so that leaves you to do it at home pretty much.

62,

I recommend checking out downtown on 4/20 next year. Bunch of losers and wanna-be gangsters.

I can see both sides on this issue, but I'm worried it will do more harm than good. I love Denver, and I hope this does not have a negative effect.
dbtexasag05

I'm with Proud. I believe it will have a negative effect a well. There is already enough weird transient stuff in this town. The last thing we need is more crazy downtown and in boulder.

More texans need to head this way to keep the Californians out. I don't care about about the politics as much as I do raising children and trying to tell them drugs are a no no when their buddy down the street can do it legally.

But anyway

I think it'll take some getting used to by families, because it's always been percieved as a narcotic and will continue to be by a lot of people. But after 5-10 years of (hopefully) successful regulation, the image of it will change and it will be seen as more of a recreational thing that isn't illegal, but something kids should stay away from like alcohol.

I'm with sun devil. You don't want your 12 year old drinking or smoking cigarettes either.. so why is weed any different? the new law is 21 and up, that was a good move, as 18 and up might have been a little risky.

AND, I see it like this: the people who previously smoked it are going to continue to do the same, just legally now. Any person who is now going to do it because it's legal is likely a law abiding citizen (otherwise they would have been doing it already), and I don't think that type of person is going to change the social landscape of the city because they now occasionally enjoy hitting the pipe.

Any person who does it who is going to cause problems likely would have been doing it already outside of the law...

that's my opinion anyway.

I am very curious to see how it plays out with employers. If you drink on a sat night, and you get drug tested Mon morning, you're OK, it's not in your system. Not the same with weed, it will be in your system, but you are not still high 36 hours later. So can they fire you? Maybe technology will allow testing to see how long it's been since it was PUT in your system.. that would make the drug testing fair.

When the legalization talk first started, my initial thought (which lacked little depth) was "we might as well get tax revenue from the big winners buying and selling it."

After talking to several friends who are pharmacists and doctors, I've changed my opinion quite a bit. The effect it has on brain development and dependency, especially on younger people, worries me. And yes, I've heard it makes people really lazy.

I assume and hope that most employers will make it a fireable offense to have weed in your system at any time.

While they certainly are entitled to do that, I just think that weed is not as dangerous of a drug for it to be considered a fireable offense at any time.

If you seem high at work and they drug test you and you get caught, you get fired. No problem with that. But for someone who were to do it on the weekend occasionally and get fired because they were nailed on a drug test 10 days after smoking... I think that is wrong. (But of course private companies can do whatever the f they want.)

I just don't see the huge difference between smoking and drinking... enough for smoking to be a fireable offense anyway. Both are used as relaxation methods by a large number of people. Just my opinion.
