So I have a united club card and with this I get 10,000 mile certificates to use toward a flight. They have a 1 year expiration date.

I booked 5 flights to Hawaii back in march for a trip we planned in August for 250,000 miles total. Used 240,000 of my own miles and the 10,000 certificate.

Unfortunately, tropical storm Lala had other plans and my flight got canceled. Unable to rebook so asked for a refund.

United refunded me the 240,000 miles back to my account and "reinstated" the certificate. Only now this certificate expired 2 weeks before the flight was scheduled to occur. So it appeared in my account expired and disappeared completely the next day. I called United and they absolutely refuse to reinstate a 10k certificate or give me 10k miles.

They should give me what I asked for or am I crazy?

I would put in a customer service case. I've had a lot of success doing that where they seem to hand out miles like cheap Halloween candy.

They must have it out for me. Refused via the customer case. AI (lol) suggested I log a complaint for lack of refund through DOT which I did and they responded to that saying they did refund me the 10k 8/14 even though the certificate expired on 8/4.

So basically they are saying they did give it back to me and it's not their fault it's now expired. Called chase and they were no help. Told them I was gonna cancel the card and the dude goes yeah you probably should.

Looks like I'm not getting it back, just not going to fly United anymore I suppose

you had 250K miles to use and a club card that you spent $700 on and you are going to stop flying united over 10K?

The first response is usually AI. You have to reply back to have a human read it.

Principle. I'd do the same thing. Shop with your wallet. **** United.

It's likely part of your credit card agreement. Might even be unrelated to united.

i went through this last year, and with the United Club being just a hot mess at all times (even polaris is garbage at some airports like SanFran....) it wasnt worth it.

Ultimately, the games they make you play to get all the perks for the card just arent worth the 700 buck price tag.

The final straw for me with United was them cheapening Polaris. Now when shopping, instead of it just being one price, they have many tiers of Polaris, and at the base tier, you cant select your seats, cant get any miles or pqp.... if you want these basics then you have to drop 400 bucks more.... just dumb.

Found a direct flight to Paris on AirFrance for less, and for the first time in years, ill not be flying United.

sorry it's at your expense, but this sincerely made me laugh when reading.

The CC schemes are tough and I have found myself enjoying the simplicity of my cash back card more than my airline one..

this.. all the point stuff from credit cards are under the issuing card T&Cs.. Not united.

" Unused award flight discounts may not be combined, transferred, extended beyond expiration date"

Once an expiration date is assigned to a 10k point award, it never changes. So it's best to use it up before it expires.

Another odd term; the flight you use it on has to be more than 10k points. You can't burn it on a 9500 point flight, it won't let you attach it.

Can't believe you would leave United over this (laugh face)
Short fuse I guess.
