I'm looking for family beach ideas for the last week of July or first week August from Austin. Five days for a family of 5 all with passports (kids ages 8, 6 and 3).

The wife would prefer an AI option which I think may be a waste of money with picky eaters. This trip is mostly for the kids whom have never been to the beach and have been stuck at home all summer with us as we work from home. I'm thinking $5K-$6K max if possible to hang out water parks, beach, etc. Thanks in advance.

With your budget of around $5,000-$6,000 for five people, flying from Austin for five days during late July or early August, you'll want to be strategic since it's one of the busiest (and most expensive) travel times of the year. That said, there are some great family-friendly options in Mexico and the Caribbean that offer beautiful beaches, kids' water parks, and plenty of activities.

If your budget includes airfare, it may be a bit more challenging to find a quality all-inclusive resort that checks every box, especially with current flight prices being higher than usual, but it's definitely not impossible. A big factor will be whether you're comfortable sharing a standard room or if you're hoping for a larger family suite. With a few flexible expectations around room type, resort amenities, and destination, I'm sure there are some options out there.

I personally don't think all-inclusive resorts are necessarily a waste with picky eaters. Most family resorts have multiple restaurants, buffets, snack bars, ice cream, pizza, burgers, and kid-friendly options throughout the day. For families, they can be a great value because you don't have to worry about every meal, snacks, or drinks while you're there, making it much easier to relax.

Feel free to reach out via DM or email if you have any other questions or need any help.

I don't think you can go international at that price. I would look into vrbo at south Padre, Port A or Galveston and drive.

We have a beach house in Pirates Beach if you plan to go that route, perfect for a family of 5. And Galveston has Schlitterbaun water park, Moody Gardens, etc.

I think the price point could work if you fly out of Houston, but not great flight times (last flight out, but also last flight coming back). Most of the resorts would be lower end and not on good beaches.

Barcelo Maya Palace would be around $6100 with transportation to/from the resort. But sargassum has been really bad this summer, so it could make the beach unusable.

I agree with above, I think taking your kids to South Padre Beach would be a good option. If you don't go a condo route, I personally like the Courtyard Marriott there as if you get one room up from entry level, they are quite large. They have a resort style pool, outdoor bar/grill, and then walk off the back to the beach. It's next door to the pier, so if you get out early enough, you can find a shady spot.

BnB a spot in Gulf Shores or Destin. Leave late one evening and drive while they sleep. Hit up the local piggly wiggly for snacks & sandwiches, and go eat dinner out every night. Go to the beach, parasail, dolphin cruise, walk the beach at night holding your wife's hand, watch your kids pick shells and crabs and make some chill memories. Big travel & budget stress are mood killers. Go chill.

Crazy to me that an 8 year old kid has never been to a beach.

Rent a house in Galveston or Port Aransas.

Thanks for the suggestions. All have been Costa Rica but the conditions were not favorable for swimming while in Tamarindo.

Breeze provided great service and options but the seaweed uncertainty is going to force us to stay local.

Destin, Gulf Shores: tons of fun stuff for kids

Port A: Red Dragon Pirate Cruise, Dolphin Watch, fishing on a party boat (we like Dolphin Dock), rent a golf cart to cruise around town

South Padre: Black Dragon Cruises (pirate theme), Dolphin Watch, Horses on the Beach, Sea Turtle Inc (rescued sea turtles)

With only 5 days.... And young kids..... I'd do port aransas and drive....avoids any air travel headache....maybe south padre
If you want to fly I'd look at the Gulf Coast side of Florida..... Clearwater on down to marco island.... Lots of airport options and lodging
