It's one of those places where you can spend half a day and see it all or spend 2-3 full days and barely scratch the surface.
I agree with the post to set expectations with your spouse and the other couples ahead of time. New Orleans is a great city with something for everyone so nobody needs to be miserable.
I went a few summers ago and spent 3 full days there and treated it like a job - I was there when it opened, took a 30-min lunch on-site, and they had to kick me out at closing. I didn't see and read everything. It's completely immersive and can be overwhelming but utterly fantastic.
When I visit it next, I think I'll look into hiring a professional tour guide for a day, whether individual or as part of a group, as well as look into some of the behind-the-scenes offerings.
Have a blast and just know that unless you're spending a full week, you won't see and read everything.
Oh, and enjoy some good meals and drinks in the evenings. I went alone and that really helped me process the emotion and enormity of the museum and decompress each evening.
