The world is a very big place. Why people choose to vacation where known material security issues are a real possibility instead of 1000 other places is beyond me. It's like people defend going to Mexico like it is the only place to visit. I don't get it.

This isn't hard to figure out. It's quick, easy, and cheap.

I won't sit here and tell you it's the best or only place to go because it's obviously not, but it checks a lot of boxes for casual travelers.

Thank you

As much as some people can't understand why people vacation in Mexico I can't understand why they care.

It's the Karen Boomer and Terry generation. They can't help but give advice that no one cares about or asks for because they think their opinion is THE opinion.

Personally, I can't even see why an American needs to leave this country. There is nothing that this entire planet has to offer me that I cannot find an equal or better quantities right here inside the United States borders.

But as for Mexico right now, Quintana Roo is operating as normal in the shelter in place is lifted. It's good to go just like it was yesterday and the day before and the last week and as far back as I can remember.

Personally, we travel there because we get to go for free and it's all expenses paid. Not only that, it is nice to go to places like that to see how other people live. It's a great way to gain some perspective. Places like Mexico and Jamaica are fun to visit, but they actually make me feel kind of bad sitting around on my ass while people who probably have trouble feeding their kids, bring me food and drink.

Touche.

The fact that neither of those crossed my mind should tell you my feelings on it. I know some folks "crave" travel to see that stuff.

We are perfectly happy sitting on our own porch watching our deer and cattle. We don't have that travel bug.

I'm aware of more American tourist deaths in the Carribbbean over the last 10 years than I am of them in Mexico. Some of yall lack serious perspective.

The whole situation reminds me of this video:

But really, Mexico has a huge incentive to get the narco-terrorists under control before the World Cup. Perhaps this is part of that plan. Perhaps not. But the next few months will be interesting.

Mexican government does not have the ability to get cartels under control except by mutual agreement. And even then the cartels hold all the cards and the cartels will set the parameters of the agreements.

But if the cartels have a way to make money during the World Cup then an agreement can be reached. And there is a way, as Human Trafficking will skyrocket during the World Cup, especially where teams from the ME will be playing.

Puerto Vallarta is our go-to place for fun and relaxation. Very disturbing and unsettling.

When we first started going, our 80-something y/o parents would text and call to make sure we were safe. We made fun of them and texted back selfies at the resort's infinity pool and out in the bay with whales jumping in the background.

I reached out to our driver and favorite bellman over there and they are shaken a little bit. We'll see.

More Americans Are Killed in Mexico Every Year Than you Realize

Quote:

Though incomplete, the data suggest an average number of U.S. deaths in Mexico of about 194 annually, of which there is an average of 60 homicides a year. That suggests that about 30 percent of U.S. deaths in Mexico are at the hands of another person.

I'm not a Mexico-travel-hater, as my family grew up vacationing in the interior of Mexico (Copper Canyon, Zacatecas, Guadalajara, etc). But I really hate that all of those places are so dangerous now. I also don't like that so many think the beaches being safe mean everything's good in Mexico.

The Mexican army definitely kicked the ant pile this time. Saw that they took out the second in command as well.

I'll definitely go back to Mexico when ever this blows over.

Yes, but many of those are not tourists, but US citizens with dual citizenship and other full-time Mexican residents, with US citizenship.

In any case, I'm moving on from this subject. Go, don't go. Cheers.

Also, over 2/3 of those murders occur in the border states, making them pretty irrelevant in any discussions of beach resort vacations.

He may be looking for domestic travel ideas. I've always traveled internationally but lately over the past few years I've done a lot more domestic travel. International travel (and I don't mean BS international to Mexico/Caribbean), has become a beating. He's right in that there is a LOT to see and do in the US and we largely ignore it when making travel plans to somewhere "exotic".

Not only weird, but objectively incorrect. The US is awesome and we have so many different experiences, landscapes, and options available to us because of how massive and varied our country is.

But to say, why would anyone need to leave this country to experience what travel...TRAVEL...offers, is just an insane take. Like someone else said, if you've ever seen the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel (which is one of a billion examples of what the world has to offer that we can't experience here) - you know why stepping out of your own borders is meaningful, if not necessary.

It is such a shame what the corruption and cartels have done to Mexico the past couple of decades. So many beautiful and interesting people and places just across the border that we will never be able to experience. So much culture, history and geography.

I would love to be able to hop in a Winnebago and head south across the border. Explore all the little towns on the way to Puerto Vallarta or Acapulco. Travel through desert, mountains, jungle then explore up and down the pacific coast.

Used to be able to cross over until the 2000s. Now you wouldn't dare take the family on a road trip through Mexico.

Everyone has their own perspective on that, so I will share mine, which differs from yours, simply as another data point.

The risk of crossing the border into Mexico is often exaggerated. I drove into Tijuana and farther south down to Ensenada probably at least 15 times over 6 years, with the last being less than a year ago. I never came close to having any criminal acts perpetrated on me.

My wife was with me every time, and a few times we took other visiting family members with us. We also ran into a lot of Americans down there for various reasons - wineries, restaurants, surfing, sightseeing, etc. I don't find the risk to be appreciably different than lots of places one might visit in the US.

Has anything occurred recently in Mexico that could change your safety and security if you were to make the same trip again soon?
