Our family is taking a trip to Niagara Falls this summer, and planning to drive over to the Canadian side as we've heard it is much better. While there, we'd like to spend a night or two on that side of the border and head up to Toronto just to look around. I've never stayed in a hotel in Canada. Any tips, or things I should know before I book? Currency, amenities, expectations, rules, etc?

As a bonus, if anyone has suggestions for great places to stay or things to do between Niagara Falls and Toronto, let me know.

Thanks!

I'm in Canada several times a year for work (Western Canada), but there's no appreciable difference between US and Canadian hotels or any customs to be aware of.

I use my US credit cards, both work and personal, without any issues other than my work card charging a 1% foreign transaction fee.

Made this trip in October - spent one night in Niagra Falls Canada - I think it was the Crown Plaza near the Hard Rock casino - hotel was old and not very nice but only spent one night before we headed to Toronto.

The Niagra Falls cruise was right across the street from the hotel so it was convenient - my kids are older and the goal was to get to Toronto so we didn't spend much time in Niagra - there are things to do on the Canada side - almost like a mini amusement park area close to the Falls Cruise.

The Falls cruise was cool - take about 20 to 30 minutes - they provide ponchos and takes you past the US side and the big fall and hangs out at the base for a while before returning. Advise making reservations.

Drove to Toronto - stayed at Hotel Intercontinental - very cool City. Food scene was great can't go wrong with just about any place. There was a market we went to near the distillery district - large food court similar to Chelsea Market.

Spent 2 nights in Toronto and maily ate and shopped. Lots of high end stores near University of Toronto and a great old bar near the Art Gallery of Ontario.

Usually no problem with credit cards at stores - some of the food vendors charged a premium but we paid in US $ cash. If you are buying things with cash its better to have Canadian $.

May not mean much to you, but the NHL Hall of Fame is in Toronto
The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But, it's still on the list.

You will be fine, I have not had any hotel experience in CA that is different than US.

There are some hotels right at the edge and I would splurge for a room overlooking the falls.

We stayed at the Embassy Suites on the Canadian side of the Falls. Upgraded to a Falls View room at check-in. This was the view from our room on the 42nd floor. Hotel was great, convenient to everything.
