Wife and her best friend are looking to head to Greece next sept/oct. they are not into the party scenes islands. Looking to do Athens and Naxos. Travel agent sent them 10 day itinerary $10k per person NOT including flights? Am I crazy for thinking that is way high? Or is Greece just that expensive. Thinking I could plan their schedule for half that amount. Any Greek experts on here?

I'd fire that travel agent yesterday bro. Your wife and her boyfriend could do 10 days in Athens and Naxos for a third of that and it would be a phenomenal trip.
Did 10 days for 2 people in Athens, Paros, Naxos in 2021 and spent $5K total. Including flights!

That seems way high to me. We went in 2022 (in September) for a week and it cost under 4k total w/ flights.

Quick look through my stuff.
Flights were $740 x2 ($1480) on Delta
Hotel in Athens near Monastiraki Square near the Parthenon ($500) for 4 nights

Flights on Aegean Air to Santorini round trip $141 x2 ($282)
3 nights on a cliff edge hotel in Fira ($635)

So thats $2900 for flights and hotels. We didn't stay at 5* places or anything, but the hotels we stayed at were nice.

Did a day trip out to Delphi that was like $60/pp. Most Museums were pretty cheap.

Food & drinks were cheap (other than one restaurant on the water in Oia).

Now obviously inflation has gone up a lot, especially in flights, but $10k in Greece should get you some insanely nice stuff.

Agreed with above that you can do it much cheaper. A couple years ago my wife and I spent 2-3 nights each in Naxos, Paros, Mykonos, Santorini, Crete and Athens. Very nice local hotels for $250-$500 / nt depending on on what you are looking for in Naxos and Paros. Only other $ to spend is on restaurants and beach clubs to hang out all day. And perhaps a rental car or more likely just walk and tax a few taxis. Generally a reasonably priced trip depending on the hotels you pick.

That's super high, either work with a different travel agent or give that one more feedback regarding budget. But I will say if going this summer, flights to Europe have been super expensive! April/May or Sept/oct there is much better pricing.

Naxos was my favorite Greek island - quiet (no cruise ships dock there) and still great atmosphere.

That's ridiculous pricing for Greece.

would definitely try to go in September. Tourist stuff starts shutting down in October.

I'm a travel agent and that definitely seems expensive to me...I'm working on some Greece itineraries right now for summer and they are way less than that for two people. I had a couple go to Greece last year for only two stops and it was less than $12K total with flights for one week.

I know sometimes it helps to be very specific about budget and must haves to us travel agents, especially for Europe and other countries overseas.

Just remember, at the end of the day it's all Greek.

In all honesty, have a great time. I have not yet traveled to Greece.

Crisis averted. Was not per person but total cost. Got it covered now.
