First time going to Europe. Will be with two of my kids (HS & College grad).

Need help getting from Salzburg to Paris on 12/31/24 - prefer not overnight to enjoy the scenery.

Online searches show lots of different time differences and costs. No idea what reputable / clean / safe train lines are. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I find Google maps to be the easiest resource for navigating public transit in Europe. If I were booking your trip for me personally, I'd take the 962 train out of Salzburg at 10:39am, arriving in Stuttgart at 2:37pm. It looks like you have a 4 minute walk to the next train which departs Stuttgart Central Station at 2:52pm and arrives at Gare de l'Est in Paris at 6:05pm. I typically look for itineraries with the fewest transfers, and this appears to be the fewest. The trains in this part of Europe typically run on schedule and will depart whether you are on the train or not, so be sure you are aware of the time. You are responsible for loading and unloading your own luggage. The luggage racks will be fairly easy to find once you get on. If this is the only time you'll be taking the train, I'd get your tickets for the first leg directly from the WESTbaun website. https://westbahn.at/en/ticket-shop/buy-tickets/ and your tickets for the second leg from the Rain Europe site. https://www.raileurope.com/en-us

As someone that has made the mistake, don't book a regional train. Make sure you have an assigned seat.
Also, it is easier to fly. New Years Eve is not a good time to be on a train. So crowded, It is a long ride from Salzburg to Paris.

Rail Europe is where you can search tickets.

If me, I would fly that route. That is a long journey via train. Also a solid chance some delays happen and you don't make a connection. If no go flight options out of Salzburg, take train to Munich and fly from there.
Forgot to add the cost may even be cheaper that train to fly…just depends on which budget airlines fly that route.

Looked at schedules; best option is to get into Munich on the evening of 12/30 (lots of trains), then take the 8:46 am to Paris East (2:08pm arrival)

Found a good route from Salzburg to Paris (leave 10:39 arrive 18:05) but the 15 minute transfer time in Stuttgart concerns me. Is this too tight a window?

I lived in Stuttgart for 5 years. It's not a difficult train station to maneuver. Assuming your trains are both on time, 15 minutes is plenty of time to walk from one platform to another.

Don't plan on wandering around, going to the restrooms, checking out shops in the train station, etc. Go from one train to the next and you should be fine.

All the trains I have traveled on in Europe have been safe, clean, and on time. I use Omio to find high speed trains. I recommend 1st class seats. They are inexpensive by American standards. Renfe is a great train company as well. Have fun.

Agreed. First class seats are the way to go at holidays and peak times because you get an assigned seat and you'll have room for your bag in 1st class.

Overhead bag spot is only good for small bags and the luggage area that some cars have fills up. Otherwise you'll be sitting between cars in 2nd with bag until someone gets off.

2nd class is fine at all other times but holidays 1st w/ reserved seat. is the way to go especially on longhaul trains.

Buy your tickets directly from Bahn.com. Use their app and the ticket will be a mobile one on your phone. It's too easy.

Last question. One route goes through Germany and a different through Zurich.I feel like the Zurich route would be much prettier. Price is the same and the time difference is less than an hour.

The Zurich route might be more scenic, if it goes through Innsbruck, but if you go through Munich, it probably wouldn't be much more scenic. Swiss trains are the best for being on time, so you would have that going for you. German trains have been less reliable in recent years.

We did the Salzburg to Zrich route last September. Even though it was raining off and on, it was well worth the extra hour.

I use the RailEurope app. It shows an 11.5 hour journey including a 2.5 hour layover in Zurich. Departs just before 8:00 am and arrives a bit after 7 pm.

As of this summer Stuttgart train station was still under massive construction and platforms required a lot of walking. Do your research.
