London places to stay/advice

Headed to London/Liverpool first week of April for the first time with wife and 17 yr son. Flying into Heathrow and then going to take train to Liverpool. Staying for a couple days for a Premier League game at Liverpool and visit the city. Then taking train back to London for 2 and a half days before flying out from Heathrow. Obviously not enough time but all we got.

Any advice/recommendations for places to stay in London? Thinking central London for the main tourist spots but maybe Notting Hill area as easy tube ride in and closer/easier back to Heahthrow. Have researched some London travel blogs and such but hoping for some thoughts with those on here that have been! Potentially looking for a hotel/suite or at least sofa bed for son. Small kitchen would be great like apart-hotels but may not be viable. Thanks!

If you stay in these areas then you are in the heart of most of the sights which will be a short walk or at most an easy tube ride...Whitehall, St. James, Mayfair, Covent Garden.

To get back to Heathrow is pretty easy from anywhere in London so that should not be a consideration. All you do is take the tube to Paddington Station and then take the Heathrow Express directly to Terminal 2 (united Airlines) or Terminal 4 (American / BA).

Take the Elizabeth Line instead of the Heathrow Express. Gets you there just a little slower but for half the price. Newest line on the network.

Question: Why not just take a taxi to the airport? Is it just the cost difference that is why y'all recommend the tube?

We're riding the tube is part of the London experience. Don't avoid it in favor of a taxi.

I believe from Piccadilly Station you can go directly to Heathrow by tube. for only two or three nights I would try to stay near Piccadilly Circus. With so little time you don't wanna spend too much time lost or trying to find your way around. There's so much within walking distance from there. It's too bad a company called London Connection went out of business during the pandemic. They had a nice group of flats that they rented out. But for two or three nights just find a hotel in a good location anywhere off of Piccadilly Lane or near Hyde Park corner.

Somebody here was pitching flying into Manchester to go to London a while back. I've done that but found it a massive waste of time. I would do that though if you are heading to Liverpool for a match… it would save loads of time.

I live in London, been to all the big cities here: in my opinion, Manchester, Liverpool and Birmingham aren't worth sticking around to sightsee in. You'd be better off doing a night in Liverpool maybe ahead of the PL game, then doing a train to London afterwards even if in the evening to get a day or 2 extra there.

As others have mentioned, with the Elizabeth line open now, I wouldn't consider being near Paddington that much of a premium in terms of getting back to Heathrow.

Traffic as well. Can be an absolute nightmare at time and the train is a pretty consistent known travel time to plan you return to the airport.

I'm considering a very similar trip (Liverpool fan) in April/May. Do you have match tickets yet?

My planning has been to fly to Manchester and out of London. Just one train back to London for a few days before heading back home. We were also trying to work in a Wrexham game as well. 2-3 days in Liverpool area and 5 days in London.

Tube is easy and efficient to get to/fro airport. If you don't use the Heathrow Express, the Blue Line is easy as well....just make sure you pick the express (no stops) train.

Yes, we have a hospitality package for the 4/2 Everton match (hope it doesn't get moved!). Thanks to all for the replies. The main point of the trip is the Liverpool game, which is on a Wednesday. Definitely wanted to take the time to see London while there, but middle of the week game really limites the time as this is during my son's spring break. The flight cost savings from where we are in NC were huge from doing Sunday to Sunday (thankfully he is off on Monday too after spring break).

So fly out Sunday night and arrive Monday at Heathrow...train to Liverpool by Monday mid afternoon. Have Monday night there, Tuesday to explore Liverpool and do Anfield tour (their stadium) on Tuesday and then game day on Wed. That leaves us going back London on Thursday morning and having that afternoon and Friday and Saturday for London. Best we could do!

Love staying in Mayfair; close to everything important. I travel often on business and we use The Washington when I am there.

We stayed at the Kimpton Fitzroy in 2019 with our teen son and they actually had good sized rooms with 2 queens.

As someone that goes to London fairly regularly, I would go with this.
