We are finally headed there in two weeks

Hotels, flights, and a couple of restaurants are booked, but we haven't booked any tours or excursions.
Spending 3 days in Ubud and 3 in Sanur.
What advice do you have? What can you not miss? Any specific tours or anything you suggest?

Ubud has the monkey forest sanctuary- worth it. We just had the hotel get us a driver for the day and he took us to the main sites. It's very reasonably priced, and easier than any group tour

In Ubud we hired a driver to take us to the water temple, rock temple, and rice terraces. Skipped the monkey place because we were traveling with kids and read several horror stories about aggressive monkeys biting (if you get bitten you get to enjoy a course of rabies shots). Also did a cooking class and Batik class.

We (me, wife, 16-year-old son, and 13-year-old daughter) were in Bali for 2 weeks in February this year and had a great time. We spent time in Sanur, Canggu, and Ubud. It has some of the kindest, sweetest, most sincere people you will meet.

Sanur was OK, and it has some nice resorts. We found it to be a good place to get over the jetlag and get settled in. It's also on the coast and pretty close to the port. I'd recommend a day trip to Nusa Penida for one of those three days.

Ubud is inland, so more of a jungle vibe than a beach vibe. We were safe and fine at the monkey sanctuary, but the monkeys are known to take loose items that are not properly put away. While in Ubud, you can visit one of the "Bali swings" and a luwak coffee place.

We also went on a hike of Mount Batur, an active volcano (smoke, no lava). For our family, who spends summers hiking in Colorado, it was enjoyable and nice to start at such a low elevation.

Drivers are incredibly cheap in Bali ($50/day + tips cheap), so don't hesitate to find one to drive you around to various waterfalls and other sights. We booked private tours and directed the drivers to go wherever we wanted.

Been to Bali a few times. One of my favorite memories was renting a scooter in Ubud and just taking off into the countryside for the day. Had lunch overlooking the rice paddies, visited some temples, etc.

Was scootering difficult? I've heard various levels of warnings on doing that vs just hiring a driver

I didn't have a problem with it, and I think that was only the second time I've done that in my life. I wouldn't scooter around southeast Bali because of the traffic, but I never felt uncomfortable doing it in central Bali. I enjoyed the freedom to explore where I wanted and for how long I wanted.

Scootering around from Ubud was super easy and incredibly fun. I had driven on the left side of the road before, which helped, but other than not realising that the ladies holding up water bottles on the side of the road were actually selling gas for scooters, it was super easy.

No mention of the Mother Temple, Besakih? Not too far from Ubud and a must see. If you go to 2 temples, Besakih and Tanah Lot are my picks.
