I was in MSY last Tuesday...buddy had CLEAR and made it through with no delays. Precheck line was longer then the regular line.

Normally no issues when I fly elsewhere, but that was the first time I thought about it.

I can believe instances of Clear being faster...but how long were both lines where you say pre-check was longer? Did PC have 3 and the main line 2? I just have never seen more than about 4 people in line for PC, so it seems weird to imagine it suddenly having a big crowd in line.

We've had Clear for ~5 yrs now, DEN is usually a cluster so it's worth it IMO.

Concur, this is by far where I get the most bang for the buck
I've flown a few times a year out of DEN for 4-5 years now with tsa pre check and never waited more than 3-5 minutes in that line. Most recent was a friday in Jan.. maybe 10 people in front of us?

Denver security is hit or miss but when it's miss it's really bad. TSA precheck regularly gets over 100+ people in line.

The line for TSA PreCheck has become longer than general security in some cases. It's annoying. I find myself just going through regular security about 1/3 of the time because it's quicker than waiting in the PreCheck line. Unless you're Clear.

Clear now has the upper hand and is acting like a FastPass to the front of the TSA Pre line. It's what TSA Pre used to be. But I'm indignant about it and (for now) refuse to pay for another service. Obviously, that will change if my credit card pays for Clear. I don't have an AmEx. At $189/year, I just don't think it's worth it.

As a related note, I raced my coworker through security yesterday at SLC. He stayed in TSA Pre and I went through regular security. Even though my stuff had to run through twice because I forgot to take my laptop out of the bag (Ok, that part of regular security is annoying), I still beat him by about 4 minutes.

They also had some new screening tech in regular security that took a real-time picture of you and compared it to your scanned ID that TSA was using. I'd never seen it before and they weren't using it in the TSA Pre area. https://www.tsa.gov/news/press/releases/2023/03/09/tsa-using-state-art-identity-verification-technology-accepting
2 things;
1. Clear doesn't replace TSAprecheck. They are different things. If you add clear to TSAprecheck, that is your most efficient/quickest option; skip the line, then go through precheck for convenience of not removing liquids, laptop, take off shoes, etc.
But Clear does not get you into a precheck line, so without it, you will be stuck with the infrequent travelers and their kids taking forever, taking off shoes, removing liquids and laptops from the bag etc.. Sounds miserable.

2. You can add 'family and friends' to a clear account for $60, so you can get 4 adults for $190 + $180 or ~$90 ea per year. Kids under 18 are free. Also can have a United chase card and get main acct at $150 to save even a bit more.

South (by the hotel) - I've been many times with no line and other times it winds out of the ropes area and down the side by the Subway and those places.. I've seen non-tsa precheck be over 1000 people winding back and forth through the checkin area. Like I said hit or miss.

A lot of that has to do with the seemingly random closures due to construction of either the north or south entrance. Recently it's been more efficient as the north line has been mostly open. Getting there at rush hour absolutely you see these things. I'm actually taxiing up to DEN now and will peek over there on the way out.

Good feedback by all. Long story short, I applaud CLEAR for offering an alternative, and one that is obviously the way of the future. My issues with them came down to balky software and interface (I guess I have a face too ugly for recognition, at times). The staff also were pretty green, and they're bound to get better with repetition. Having to go through CLEAR and then the main line afterwards just seemed counter-productive (happened a lot). The other unforgivable item was closing the Las Vegas checkpoint at 8:00pm every day. Who doesn't staff LAS at odd hours?

Bottom line, it wasn't worth the cost and effort. I'm sure it will improve in the future.

Precheck was probably 20+ with one machine
Clear 2-3 max
Regular 10-15 with multiple machines

I've generally found pre check fine, even if the line is long, because the people are usually more experienced and you don't have to take all your crap out, take off shoes, etc.

Exception, flew out of iah Sunday and a family got in an argument with the tsa employee because they said the wheels wouldn't come off their stroller to go through the scanner. Basically threatening to sue him when he showed them and they popped right off.

If I flew as much as I did in the past I'd probably do clear as well, just to have options.

You can add Clear to PreCheck. I've had TSA PreCheck since the beginning and it's always been a blessing. But now if you add Clear to it, it's the new "fast pass". The airports I frequent move the Clear passengers to the front of the PreCheck line.

Now with all the schmucks that are TSA Pre, more and more I'm having the situation where the PreCheck line is as long as regular security and the people that are saving time are the growing number of ones with Clear. It's just become a new pecking order.

yes, that is my second sentence. Again, I would never do clear without precheck; I don't want to take off shoes, liquids, and be with infrequent flyers doing that

Clear is regularly longer than TSA preckeck at IAH due to their absolute inefficiency at moving people through their kiosks.
Ive used CLEAR at IAH over 20+ times at IAH and never once did I encounter a line, even during peak travel season. It was the same at other US airports. There are sometimes 1-2 people using the kiosks in front of me, but theres always other open kiosks available to use. Im usually done with the CLEAR check in, in a minute or less. Its basically just scan retina or thumb print, show boarding pass, and thats it.

Not sure where all these stories are coming from about CLEAR taking so long.

Terminal B. I'm through there just about every week, including monday morning rush. I almost always get beat by the guys walking in next to me who use pre check line when I use clear. It has its uses but IAH B isn't it. C is hit or miss but I rarely go through that CF.

My mom has flown to my house plenty of times with frozen food (think soups, gumbo) in her carry on. It ain't liquid.

Right on their website too
https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/whatcanibring/items/ice
"Frozen liquid items are allowed through the checkpoint as long as they are frozen solid when presented for screening. If frozen liquid items are partially melted, slushy, or have any liquid at the bottom of the container, they must meet 3-1-1 liquids requirements."

Lol at this. What a mess, and wtf.

Why does global entry and PreCheck expire?

If you renew global entry do you have to go through the whole 9-yards, interview, application process to simply renew?

Other than a money grab, what is the point of all this?

Are they conceiving of a situation where someone might be approved for global entry and pre-check and somehow not be eligible when they go to renew?

I renewed my Global Entry before the expiration date. I did not need a new interview. My wife let hers expire and had to do a new interview. Not sure if that is the way the system works or if it is just random.

If you do GE, you get Pre-check with it. I did not have to do a new interview to renew, and neither did my wife. But some people are required to go back in and interview. I am sure that part of GE is a criminal background check and a check against various watch lists. So if you made it on to one of those after your initial application, presumably it would be caught during the renewal.

Airport security doesn't have to be this miserable. They won't make changes though because too much money is made from Clear, Precheck, etc. I fly routinely all over the world and never have to go through the security headaches that I do in the United States, with only very few exceptions.

Eh, depends what airport you're in. There are many where this is the exact opposite.
I mean, that was the original idea and should be the case.

Hobby is actually the worst with this, it's usually 50/50 for me.Seems to be the case.

Admittedly, I do tend to be on the first flights out of the airports in the morning, so that might play into it too. Earlier the flight, the more business only the flights tend to be and higher mix of PreCheck in my experience.

Although my SLC experience yesterday was at 4PM flight.
I was at Hobby at 4:30am in the morning last Sunday. PreCheck line had 30ish people. Regular line had less than 10. Slightly annoying, but not as annoying as the overly happy, talk to damn much and loud Clear reps leading someone in front and through everything while you wait in line for PreCheck.

Funniest I found was in London....
There is no "pre check", all have to take off shoes, put anything in zip locks etc.... unless you were BA first class, they got to speed through security.

It all a joke to make you miserable

My experience as well, not having to redo the interview as long as you hit renew before expiration.

What I've never understood is that I get pre check automatically but not the same for global entry. I know it's because tsa vs customs but still, if it's good for one you'd figure you're good for the other.

I was in Nepal a few weeks ago, they're much worse. Screen upon entering the airport. Then, go to the check in counter, then their version of TSA. Then, when you arrive at the destination, even with in country flights, you get screened again coming off of the plane.

Shoes & belts are X-rayed just like here.

Seems they aren't just protecting the planes, but the airport itself.

I'm guessing that airport is the lifeblood of their tourism dollars and they want to ensure no one is afraid to fly there to climb a mountain.

Ran across this little nug when researching this pre-check issue.

Now they got enhanced drivers licenses with a American flag emoji available in some states.

You may recall that for a long time your license had to have a gold star emoji to comply with the real ID act. Now theres yet another program that uses an emoji to provide proof of citizenship.

It's wild that we've got so many duplicitous programs to establish identity and citizenship. this combined with the TWIC card program for certain industries. What functional country has this many layers of bureaucracy?

Guess we'll all standby for the sub-dermal RFID chip ... an all in one solution!
