Looks like this problem isn't going away. At least it's not southwest making the headlines this time.

https://www.cnn.com/2022/05/28/business/memorial-day-flight-cancellations/index.html

Quote:

More than 1,300 flights were canceled as of Saturday afternoon, according to flight tracking website FlightAware, after 2,300 cancellations on Friday.

Delta Air Lines (DAL) is most affected by the cancellations, with more than 240 flights, or 9% of its operations, axed on Saturday.

On Thursday, Delta announced it was decreasing its summer flight schedule ahead of Memorial Day weekend. From July 1 through August 7, the airline said, it would cut around 100 daily flights primarily in the US and Latin America.

Separately, JetBlue said it would cut 8% to 10% of its summer schedule." Alaska Airlines reduced its schedule by about 2% through June to match "pilot capacity."

Fewer flights + fuel prices = Higer fares.

Get ready for a rough summer.

It stinks so bad. Luckily most of my clients haven't been drastically impacted but it is a pain. Southwest had been moving my clients Hawaii flights up or back a day. Luckily with AA flight delay this week, they actually put my clients on a United flight, which I was shocked about. Many agents don't want to even book air anymore.

Ugh…I thought things had calmed down. Only because we have flights on Thursday (SW and Azores Airlines) that haven't budged even once.

United flights to/from LA have been changed probably 6 or 8 times, but nothing major. AA flights also in July were changed a while back and forced us to rebook.

I'm already dreading the Nov and Dec pricing.

We made it to Anguilla on American on time this weekend but the rebooking lines were down the hall at DFW and MIA.

staffing issues; these airlines have zero slack in their schedules. Southwest has refused to cut its schedule so far and will continue to have issues when irrops happen.

Southwest has absolutely cut their schedule.

The usual flights I take to ABQ and SLC have been cut. There's one direct flight to SLC each day now. It's been slightly inconvenient.

Well, our Southwest flight to LGA is on time today.

But I booked a friend and his kids on Spirit to Newark. There are four of them, so it was significantly cheaper than United. He checked in yesterday, and got up this morning and drove to IAH only to be told he'd been rescheduled on another flight for tomorrow. They sent the email after he went to bed last night. Evidently, there are a bunch of other people at IAH with him who also didn't see the email.

They oversold the flight and sent an email yesterday asking for volunteers to give up their seats, but he didn't reply or agree to give up his.

Spirit to Newark ? Can all of them fight ?

Between my friend and his 3 boys, they probably could have taken out 4 passengers to get their seats back!

He said the flight actually wound up being cancelled, so who knows what really happened.

My sister and BIL just got cancelled on AA from DFW to Cabo. No alternative flights. No ability to reschedule. Just straight cancelled.

Sucks because they were highly anticipating this trip away from 3 kids.

How much notice were they given ?
That really sucks.

The entire flight was canceled or your friends were just bumped?

Probably cancelled. AA continues to have huge numbers of cancellations today. They're at 11% cancellations already.

Glad to see SW isn't part of this latest round of issues. We flew them to Palm Springs the week before Memorial Day and everything went smoothly and on-time with no changes in flight schedule/routing after booking for the first time in about 5 trips with them. They seem to have turned the corner...although cancelling 20,000 flights will make it easier to staff their schedule. Several of the flight attendants did appear to be relatively new, and I did see one of the gate counter agents teaching a new person how to do the job.

Figures they would get their **** together right after we got a new United CC and switched to using it for all of our payments/bills. We still have companion pass until the end of the year and 280K in SW rewards points, so if we want to fly them, we can, but they have lost our CC business for the time being because they became so unreliable last year and this spring.

Yep, cancelled. Next available rebooking was Friday night. They were given a few hours notice.

Which island(s) are you going to in the Azores?

Just Sao Miguel. When I booked, there were still some restrictions on travel between the islands. So, I just grabbed a hotel and rental car while I could.

We are actually in NYC now, waiting for our flight out of JFK later tonight.

TSA is out of control. Two different airports today and equally as bad. They must have just had their annual "How to be a jerk to travelers" refresher training.

Don't forget - *they're* the victims here, and we should be grateful that they continue to allow us to pay them $$ in exchange for a as-bad-as-it's-ever-been product

Btw-

For any South Park fans out there , watch the S5 episode "The Entity" if you haven't in a while - it's from the era of right-after-9/11 airline ineptitude but could just as well apply to today

Side rant - We've been out of the travel game (as a couple - I've traveled solo on cheap guy trips) since pre-COVID and have allocated actual vacation time this year. But between airline inconsistency and the massive cost increases in lodging I'm looking at it, it's GD depressing adding up how much we would be looking at spending.

Is there any industry that treats its customers worse than the airline industry in the US? I live in Colombia and fly around just about every other weekend. There have been zero issues and flights are still pretty cheap.

Looks like AA finished the day with 15% cancellations. United at 7%, Delta and Southwest at 3%.
But about 25% delays across domestic carriers yesterday.

Today has sucked.

I get a call from my clients at 4:30 AM. AA Vacations didn't ticket their flight so they had none when they arrived. Finally got them on another flight with NO wiggle room to check bags. Finally got them to check bags 30 min after their flight was ticketed, only then to have 15 min to get through security and to the plane. Course that didn't work.

Now getting them to Santa Domingo in the morning IF the crap weather in Florida cancel their flight. Then got to get them from SDQ to Punta Cana airport to hopefully get their bags. Right now bags show scanned at SDF this morning and nothing since.

Great way to spend my day while in Mexico.

Flew from PHX to BKK yesterday on AA and JAL through SFO & NRT. No issues w/ the AA flight. The JAL flight leaving SFO was delayed by 1.5 hrs due to delays w/ the food catering company. I don't know if that is because they don't have enough workers or what, but it seems like a ridiculous reason for a delay. Thought we were going to miss our connection in NRT, but it was a non issue because our next flight was on the same plane.

Seems like I read or saw something recently where those long haul flights can't go if they don't have enough food on board for everyone. It's some kind of rule.

Seems like there are also still supply chain issues. Our SW flight the other morning couldn't serve coffee or hot beverages because they didn't have any cups

I'm at the end of a business trip. Bad enough I have to travel home today on my day off, but got notification last night that my 0700 flight was delayed to 1130. Now I don't get home until 6:55 tonight...

Lovely. At least with the other flight I would have had the afternoon to go to the beach...

Our flight yesterday morning to Newark was cancelled the night before. We were able to get another flight to LaGuardia but had an almost 2 hr Lyft ride to where we are staying in NJ.

What did that cost you? Our Uber from the Museum of the Moving Image to JFK yesterday was over $70 - to go 11 miles. And it took an hour.

Early yesterday evening the news on the radio said many flights in Houston had been canceled due to high winds, mentioning Southwest Airlines specifically. I didn't notice any high winds in Houston yesterday.

My last SW flight had a "student" on her first orientation flight. Mind you, all the FA's are much, much older than they used to be. This student had to be well past her 45th birthday.

Staffing is a big issue as we all know.
