Took the family there this June and we stayed in a VRBO home near Rum Point. Rented a car and only took about 1/2 a day to adjust to driving on the wrong side of the road with all the round abouts.

Rum Point is awesome if you dont want to be around crowds. You can go to the beach at Rum Point and they have great swimming areas, drinks, food, etc and it is free to use. There is a great reef about 200 yards out from Rum Point and you can get dive flags from the shop at Rum Point to head out. We would go there in the morning and no one was there and we left around 11:30am to head back to eat at house and take a nap, and then we would go back in afternoon. I dont think we ever saw more than 20 people at that area even during "peak times of day".

You can also easily go to Star Fish Point from here where you can walk around in waist deep water and find hundreds of Star Fish. Kids had a blast doing this. it is over by Kaibo which is where the road ends on the island in that direction. Bio-luminescent bay is also there which can be pretty cool as well.

We took private charter to Sting Ray City - awesome experience and was neat because we got there before all the cruise ship excursions. We had probably 30-40 huge rays around us that we got to feed, pet and hold. As we were leaving probably 15-20 boats were coming in and our captain said it gets insane as the day goes on. Then we did some snorkeling and a few reefs. The snorkeling there is actually really good with water clarity, abundance of fish, and beautiful coral.

We did one day trip to Georgetown and didnt car for it overall. It is very populated and super busy. Downtown has lots of shops (mostly junk souvenir style) and parking is limited. Cruise ships crowds most of the days of the week. Seven mile beach is near there and while crowded, it is very very pretty. Basically looks like a giant swimming pool with clear water and white sand beaches. Glad we went, but i dont do well with big crowds so we only did that one day.

Our house was very nice, right on the beach and we could go straight out and swim, kayak, snorkel, etc. Felt completely safe on the island, although i will say speed limits are suggestive at best and cops dont care about speed at all.

We loved it so much we are going back next year and is our favorite spot we have been that area of the world.
Really appreciate your post - feels like this is very similar to what we want to do when we (wife and I and 4 kdis ages 12-17) arrive on Grand Cayman in late May 2020... flights are booked!

A few questions - appreciate the advice!
- Where did you rent your car from?
- Does Grand Cayman have sandbars that rise during low tide? We went to Exuma and that was an awesome thing to see.
- Rum Point area sounds like where we want to be - lots of VRBO options - do you see it better to be closer to the farthest west you can get right at Rum Point beach? or down near Kaibo? or closer to the east where North Side road meets Franks Sound road
- "you can get dive flags from the shop at Rum Point" - what is the exact name of this place? I'd like to learn more as that itinerary sounds like what we would do as well.. and how do you get to the reef that is 200 yards out?
- which private charter did you take to Sting Ray City? I like the idea of going early - heard about Red Sail that has a breakfast with the Rays tour.. definitely want to take the kids snorkeling, but Red Sail takes off from George Town for that tour
- appreciate the thoughts on George Town - agree - will spend a day there but that's all - any other specifics you can share? did you also go up north from George Town to the West Bay area?

Thanks so much for your help!

While you are waiting for AG to reply...

We rented from Hertz - published rate was $14 a day. Add in mandatory daily fees and it was around $24 per day. I falsely assumed that Hertz would have a better quality product than the ultra-cheap local competitors. All the cars in the rental lot looked to be about the same - took about 10 minutes to note all the dents and scrapes on the condition report.

Rum Point is on the ocean while Kaibo is on a bay. If you want calm waters to SUP or snorkel, Kaibo or the east side of Sand Point or Water Cay Roads. Bio Bay had lots of jellyfish when we were there in June, not sure if that is always the case. We stayed at Kaibo, walked to Starfish Point, and could have biked to Rum Point, but since we had a car, it was a 2 minute drive.

Red Sail is the dive shop at Rum Point.

We used Red Sail for Stingray City. You are correct that they don't do the breakfast excursion from Rum Point, but we found that the later afternoon trip was good as cruise ship folks had to be back to the ship by that time. They took us to Stingray and to the reef to snorkel.

How about diving options. Will be therein about a month, and I haven't been there in over a decade
Check out Wall-To-Wall diving. I've been using them for the last 6 years. The owner's name is Giles (pronounced Jiles). He and his crew run a great operation. He limits each of his dive boats to 8 divers, so no "cattle-boat" operations. The dive masters are very knowledgeable and friendly. If you forget something or have gear break, they're really good about letting you use their gear.

They are located in the Lobster Pot Dive Center, just north of Georgetown. They offer pickup/drop-off or you can drive yourself to the dive shop or yacht club. If you haven't gone diving in a while, you can do a quick refresher at the dive shop. Cheeseburger Reef is right in front of the shop.

As with all the dive shops, you'll need to give him a heads up if you're diving Nitrox. I would just tell him when you schedule.

Give em a shout! https://www.walltowalldiving.com/

I stopped in at living the dream while I was down there last week. We were staying across the street and I needed to pick up some cheap sunglasses (I lost my not cheap prescription sunglasses).

I didn't dive in this trip but just from talking with the guy, I got a good impression from him.

Any favorite places to say near Rum Point? I think I like the idea of quieter/less crowded area, vs. George Town area..

I went into a dive shop in Atlanta yesterday and the lady who runs it gave me the exact same place, including the name Giles, as a very strong recommendation. Next trip for sure!

No. And it's really mainly the west side (where SMB is) that has the more traditional beach feel to it. Much of the rest of GC is surrounded by a reef.

As far as staying whre it's not crowded, I'd echo the recommendation of a condo near the north end of SMB as another option. We stayed in one there last July and could snorkel around sea turtles the entire time we were there.

On our last trip there, we stayed at this 4 unit condo. It was not immediately on the beach, but behind a house that was and had private access to the beach directly across from the condo. So still just steps to the beach. Great place, great pool, quiet end of SMB. Also provided paddleboards, etc. for free. Was awesome. While we were there, we met a couple from Scotland that has been going to GC every year for like 10-12 years, and said that was their 5th straight trip to stay at the same place.

Been reading thru your posts and thought I would offer my 2 cents. I've been to Cayman a dozen times or so over the last 20 years and have always stayed along the 7 mile beach area without problems with crowds or overly loud party people. I've only stayed in an actual hotel once, the rest of the time we've rented condos. There are many options along SMB that would meet your needs. We were just there in July.

Rum Point/Cayman Kai is great and I imagine we will eventually rent a house in that area at some point. However, if you've never been to Cayman there are some things you should probably know. The Rum Point beach is one of the big destinations when cruise ships are in port. It will get crowded thru the middle of the day on those days. I would definitely check the port schedules. I would stay away from the port area in Georgetown on those days as well.

https://www.caymanport.com/ship-schedules-calendar/

Rum Point/Cayman Kai is somewhat secluded, so if you're planning to rent a house/condo up there, you'll definitely need a car. It's about a 45/50 minute drive up there from Georgetown. There's no grocery stores up there, so I would plan ahead for a stop in Georgetown at a grocery store if you don't want to eat out every meal. We always use the Kirk Market. There are several restaurants up there but I'm not sure exactly how many. One thing we like about the Kirk Market, is you can order party trays ahead of time. Things like sandwich trays, veggie trays, fruit trays, charcuterie trays, etc.

https://kirkmarket.ky/orders/#gourmetplatters

As for sandbars during low tide, that doesn't really happen in Cayman. There is a sandbar at Sting Ray City. That's the only one I know of. However, there's a ton of coral within swimming distance of SMB that is great for snorkeling. There are many companies that offer tours out to Stingray City. I'm not sure what your budget is but I know the dive shop I use will do a private tour out there for about 1/2 a day. My inlaws did that for 6 people and said it was $450 plus tip. They went to SRC and also to some other reefs for snorkeling. That dive shop is called Wall-To-Wall diving, if you're interested.

Rental cars. I've always used Andy's, but as I found out this last trip, they book up quick. Used Avis this last time. Haven't had any bad experiences but Avis was more expensive. For 6 people, you're gonna need a van or large SUV. Driving on the left side isn't hard once you figure out the roundabouts.

Keep in mind, GC is an island, so things are gonna be pricier than normal. Then tack on the fact that it is a British territory and the Cayman dollar is based on the British Pound, that just makes things even more expensive. I think the exchange rate right now is like $1.18 to 1 Cayman Dollar. Just about everywhere takes credit cards and US$.

There are too many restaurants to list but can offer some if you want.

Grand Cayman is a amazing place! Wherever you decide to stay, I'm sure you and your family will have a great time! Cheers!

Cayman Dollar is pegged to USD and fixed at 1 Cayman dollar = 1.2 US dollar.

wow - thanks for this! A few thoughts/questions..

- Cruise ships - there are 2 or 3 ships in each day when we will be there in late May 2020.. is that a lot? makes me consider not staying at Rum Point? hmm..

appreciate the advice on rental cars - will get one large enough for sure

really struggling with where to stay now... UGH! Rum Point, SMB, or even NW part of the island... if anyone has direct links to good places, it's much appreciated -the wife really wants us to have a beach front home, but we don't need (or want to pay) for luxury place...

We have stayed at Aqua Bay Club & Discovery Point Club. Not crowded in May & pick your own unit. There are restaurants & a grocery store nearby. Keep an eye on the cruise schedule & leave your unit after they head back to the ship. Last year we never went to Georgetown. We choose one non cruise day to go to Rum Point & Starfish Beach. One year we went to Sting Ray City in the afternoon after the ship left & we were the only boat at SRC. We get our rental car from Andys.

2-3 ships a day is about normal. Also, I didn't mean to necessarily steer you away from staying in the Rum Point area by bringing up the cruise ships. When I mentioned the cruise ship crowds at Rum Point Beach, I was referring to specific place at Rum Point. The area in this photo is what I was referring to...

There are no houses at this specific location. It's a touristy spot with beach chairs, hammocks, picnic tables, restaurant/bar. This is what I was referring to that can get crowded during the middle of day when ships are in. If you had a house in the Rum Point area with beach frontage, I doubt you would go to Rum Point Beach.

As I said before, I have only rented condos on the SMB. Each of the condo facilities have their own beaches with amenities designated for their guests only. Each of the places have beach front condo options. You will get people that walk the SMB but that's about it. I haven't really seen people just walking up and using a condo's beach chairs. So if you're looking for true seclusion, finding a beach front home to rent might be better. Here are some links to places I've stayed.

Sunset Cove - We stayed at Sunset Cove in July. We actually booked our condo thru VRBO and not the website I linked, but I wanted to give you an idea of the place. Sunset Cove is in front of the Margaritaville Resort and the 2 facilities actually share amenities and the beachfront. It has a protected cove for swimming and about 100/150 yards straight out is a great reef for snorkeling. Margaritaville Resort does provide beach service there but we ended up taking a small cooler to the beach with drinks and snacks. There are beach front condos, but I not sure of their details.

Plantation Village - We've stayed here twice. Enjoyed it both times, but when were there most recent, they were having an issue with beach erosion in front of their place. Apparently it's a normal thing that happens every few years and then the beach will come back. Weird. It wasn't a problem when we stayed there in the past but I would verify the beach condition with them if your considering staying there.

South Bay - South Bay is great. We have stayed here twice as well. Nice condos, great beach. It's next door to the Marriott. We would walk over there on occasion to get an espresso or eat at their restaurant. South Bay is more expensive than the previous 2.

I've also stayed at Villas Of The Galleon, but it's been quite some time. I think the next time we go we will look to renting something further north on SMB. Do some playing around on VRBO, you can find some good places on there. I did find this website while researching last time but I haven't had a need for larger places as of yet. https://www.grandcaymanvillas.net/

I hope some of this helps.

I'm at Sunset Cove right now. It's nice and clean but not fancy at all. Some of the units, including ours, do have a beach view. The wife arranged that. It was very reasonably priced. A couple of nice things about this spot are the little protected lagoon/cove that you can snorkel in and around, the proximity to restaurants within walking distance just across the street, and the fact that the cruise ships are not right in your backyard. Kids took flashlights out last night and scooped up crabs and other things from the little lagoon area, and I really had no concern about their safety. I went for a run this am and a Carnival Cruise ship was letting off passengers (about a mile or so away). Out of the three types of cruisers (Over-fed, Newlywed, and Nearly-Dead), this one seemed to be mainly the former and I was glad that we weren't staying too close to the ship dock area. To each his own. So far so good.

Not sure if you know or not, but if you go to the check-in desk at Margaritaville; you can get a room number generated for your condo, which will allow you to charge to it at the restaurants and bars. Just settle up with them the day you check out.

We are going with Living The Dream later today. My son has to get his check-out dives for Open Water Certification done, so I think we will be limited in where they can take us. Two shore dives this afternoon, two dives from the boat tomorrow. I'm not certain where either one will go. My son is definitely living the dream.

And thanks for the info about the charge card for Margaritaville. I swam up to the poolside bar yesterday, but really wasn't in the mood for anything other than some ice water. That could easily change.
Edit: Dive shop says shore dives are from Turtle Reef today, tomorrow's boat dives depend upon the weather and water conditions

A few restaurants to try if you are staying on north SMB. Alfrescos, West Bay Diner, & the Cracked Conch. You really never have to go into Georgetown. Also if you stay in the area of Aqua Bay Club you can see the ships off in the distance so you know when they are there. There is also a great snorkeling area at Cemetery Beach.

you all are so kind to offer advice based on your experience...

now I'm wondering if it would be better to stay up near West Bay or even Sunset Cove right on SMB, and use one of my days to drive out to Rum Point for the day, instead of the other way around like I originally thought

which is best for our first and likely only trip to ever be on the island... we want to snorkel around, stingray city, and find a way to Snuba once as well

Stay wherever you want to stay. The attractions are easy to get to, whether you rent a car (have to get used to driving on the opposite side of the road) or take taxis. One thing I would really try to do is book Stingray City on a day with, preferably, no cruise ships.

We spent 5 nights at the Comfort Suites on Seven Mile Beach. It included a free breakfast which was nice since meals were 2-3 times as expensive as what it would cost in Texas. Most of the businesses automatically converted everything to US dollars at a 1.25:1 ratio.

The Comfort Suites gave us a free rum drink at the bar by their pool/hottub area. The beach was about 100 feet from the pool. It was a pretty narrow beach which was about 20 or so feet with 3 rows of lawn chairs. They had anchored floating cylinders in the water which was pretty calm due to structures about 50 feet out from the beach. The underwater structures looked like castle towers and had fish swimming through all the holes.

There was a Kirk supermarket south of there where you can pick up food, sunscreen, and mosquito spray. I say a decent snorkel and mask there for under $20 so I got that. Other family members were skeptical, so they ended up renting for about $10/day from Diver's Supply just north of the hotel. The gear wasn't any better than what I bought.

We went on the Stingray + 2 snorkel stops tour through Captain Marvins which was about $40 per person(equipment provided). Swimming with and holding the stingrays out on the sandbar area was pretty cool. The snorkeling was near a reef and a coral garden.

We went snorkeling further up SMB and another time at Rum Point (just to the right of the pier about halfway out). Starfish Point was close by where you could see many handsize pink and gold starfish near the shore.
Other places we visited where Pedro St. James "Castle", Queen Elizabeth Botanical Gardens(the colour garden was the best part and gazebo with a breeze), Mastic Trail (2.3 miles x2 - small snakes, birds, and other critters, but would probably skip if went back), and the Turtle Center. We drove through Hell, but kept on going. We didn't find a Crystal Cave tour that fit into our schedule.

As far as food:
Cassanovas was pretty good.(you can find a $10 or 10% off coupon)
Duke's Seafood and Ribs (different specials including all you can eat lobster & ribs)
Cimboco was good
Coconut Joes (across from our hotel)
Lone Star Grill
Macabuca (near Turtle Center, Cracked Conch was closed for lunch that day) also a snorkeling area
Over the Edge
Chicken Chicken (decent chicken for a decent price)
Our coffee stop was Cafe Del Sol
Everglo near Bodden Town(meh)

We went to Turks and Caicos 5 years ago. Stayed in a condo at Seven Stars on Providenciales. I'd say the 2 places are comparable. I will say Cayman has more restaurants and the island probably sees more people annually, due to the cruise ships.

Thank you (and the other poster) for your details here.. after checking around, I'm leaning towards Sunset Cove and would need the 3 bedroom one - does that have the beach front option? Any final ideas or recommendations now that you are home?

Any other general logistics thoughts? We will rent a car and plan to spend time up in West Bay, and also check out the East Side, as well as a day at Rum Point.

Any other highlights for me to add to my itinerary? We will be there in May next year for 6 days. See below for what I've come up with so far.

THANKS!

My advice on the sting rays is to find someplace that will have you out there early. We did Capt Marvin's and were the only boat there for about 20 minutes. They were swarming and it was awesome.

I don't know which units are beachfront at Sunset Cove, not many are but none of them are too far away. We had a 2-bedroom unit. No elevators in our unit, and we had the third floor. Not a problem for us, plus we had vaulted ceilings which made the unit seem much larger and more airy, but some might be bothered schlepping up and down the stairs. We also used Captain Marvin's for the Stingray City and snorkeling half day and they were great. Plenty of food right across the street from Sunset Cove. Enjoy.

Be prepared to adjust your schedule as needed by checking the Cruise Ship Schedules:

Wednesdays seem to be the busiest days for ships and Fridays the least in general
