We'll definitley use it, but it was an investment for us....annual returns on property in the area are better than my 401k!

Just FYI....an update on my Annual Pass order through USGS.gov

It was ordered on May 27th....website at the time said would ship in 4-7 days. Called last Tuesday and was told they were behind and it would ship Thursday. Called again just now and was told it would ship tomorrow or Monday.

She did say if I call back on Tuesday they can give me the pass number.

She *thinks* it will be stamped for use July through July but could not confirm. Hopeful that's the case since it won't arrive until July....after we leave on our trip.

Both ladies were very nice....but they are clearly completely overwhelmed.

Long story short....they are crazy behind so plan accordingly.
I ordered min 6/14. Paid 10 to ship it faster. I got it in less than a week.

So if you really need it. Pay the extra 5 bucks. Yeah - I know it doesn't help you...but it might help the next guy!

We were also fortunate enough to get up to Alaska this summer and hit some parks. Here is our 41st National Park: Kenai Fjords.

Denali

This is not Denali, but a 17k mountain from basecamp which is empty this year because no permits were given out due to Covid.

Nice! We just booked a week in Moab for Thanksgiving. We were only there for two days on a prior trip. I need to find things to do in November other than rock climbing.

nice!

what's your range of travel during the trip? Will you get down to Monument Valley? or over to Capitol Reef or Bryce Canyon?

I drove this entire area and give some good ideas for sure - you have given so much to the boards - i'm excited to give back a little
BSD

We'll be staying in Moab the whole time. So a day trip to Monument Valley may work, but the Navajo nation is closed so we may not head down due to limited services and closed areas. We'll probably drive to Goblin Valley to get to Little Wild Horse Canyon but that's as far as we'll go west. We did Bryce earlier this year (in the snow, it was beautiful). So about an hour or two one way is as far as we want to venture out.

Here's some ideas to think about from my trip - hyperlinks should all work

o Drive 2 hours to Monument Valley Visitor Center. We hiked behind the Goulding's Campground 435-359-0047 Arches Trail, but not sure if you can hike there if you don't stay there. It's great with the kids.
o Check out Forrest Gump Hill 14.5 miles from Goultings and take the photo. GOT IT!

o Drive to Desert Highlights 9:30-2:30 Medieval Chamber Canyoneering Adventure.
o Drive 15 minutes to Arches National Park Hiked to Landscape Arch 1.56 mi RT. Hike The Windows 1 mi RT and extend to see Double Arch - .5 mi RT. Hiked3 miles round trip to Delicate Arch great!!
o Drive 15 minutes out of the park, then 15 minutes to Dinner at Antica Forma Wood Fired Pizza great!

o Leave at 4:00am - Drive 1 hour to Canyonlands NP - Arrive at Mesa Arch at 5:00. Hike 15 minutes to get set up before sunrise which is at 5:59, but later arrival is still great.
o Drive 20 minutes north and hike 1.5 mi RT Upheaval Dome, (we skipped) then drive south 40 minutes to hike 2 mile RT Grand View Overlook (we skipped) did stop at Buck Canyon Overlook on the way there.

o Drive 50 minutes to Dead Horse Point State Park MI2 filmed here! Park at Visitor Center to see Dead Horse Park Overlook. (skip this if you don't have time)

o Drive 50 Minutes to Melon Vine Grocery Store - load up food for the rest of the trip! Opens at 8:00 am.
o Drive 1 hour to Goblin Valley State Park. Start at the Visitor Center then drive a mile to the Goblins.
o Drive 15 minutes to Little Wild Horse Canyon Park and hike 15 mins take loop to the right for 15 mins to the Narrows, then 15 minutes inside over boulders and wiggles to the Opening, then turn back. Great!

o Drive 1.5 hours to The Gifford House for a quick tour and homemade pies & ice cream open 8-5.
o Drive 1 minute to Capitol Reef National Park Visitor Center then drive 5 minutes to Hickman Bridge 2 mi RT then drive back 3 minutes to see the Petroglyphs lookout for 5 minutes.
o Hike Grand Wash Trail Hike for 1.5 miles into the Canyon up to the (wide, not slot) narrows, then stop and return. Great hike through a dry river bed.

We did this a while back (page 6). It was awesome!! Will probably do it again. Little Wild Horse was a favorite of mine as well so we'll go back there for sure.

Which park/hike is this? We'll be out there in a few months. We'll do the hike to delicate arch for sunset this time. We only went to the overlook last time.

That's damn fine trip you had there.

Little Wild Horse Canyon is similar to this, but I don't think that photo is from there - maybe?

Also - yes - the Delicate Arch Viewpoint is nothing compared to the full hike there.. it truly was our favorite hike on the Utah trip.. lots of different terrain to get there.. don't miss it! My pics are in this thread somewhere .. I out a bunch..

We've done little wild horse(March 2019). It's awesome and family friendly. Can't wait to get back there. I thought the walls were taller only the narrows though. I want to try Irish Canyons which is just south of there but Desert Highlights is closed the week we're there so I'm looking for someone else now. I've got a lot planned in my mind for this next trip. Maybe too much. My family may want an hour or two to just relax. Haha.

Yep, it actually was Little Wild Horse Canyon. It wasn't at all technical or anything as y'all probably know but definitely our favorite part of the trip. Part of that was that it wasn't on the itinerary at all and we didn't know about it until a couple we met at Arches the day before recommended it. Did the loop through Bell Canyon and it was just cool AF. Only ran into two other people since we started early in the morning. Other than that, had it to ourselves. Loved it.

Not a bad couple of days at Shenandoah NP.

This was #45 for us. 17 to go...but no new visits until next summer. We will be revisiting a few between now and next May (Utah parks, Big Bend, Death Valley).

Today we went down to the Needles District of Canyonlands. I really wanted to hike the Joint Trail and see Chesler Park but I knew an 11 mile hike would be a thought sell to the family. So, being the resourceful guy I am, I hired a guide to take us out in a Land Cruiser on a high clearance 4WD only "road" with some steep ledges at times. Let's just say that I'm glad he was driving! We stopped along Newspaper Rock along the way.

Where is that slot canyon?

Is the other from Kodachrome?
BSD
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
That is the Joint Trail. Technically it is not a slot canyon, it is a crack in the earth not caused by water, but by the shifting of the ground beneath if. It's a fascinating area, as there is a checkerboard of cracks there. That leads to Chesler Park, which is just outside the cracks. Here's a some pics once we got out of the cracks:

And one from a little higher:

To avoid the 11 mile hike, we got there in this bad boy:

Looks like a really cool idea and something we will want to consider next time we go Can you confirm the name of the group that you hired to get you out there? I'd like to add that to my itinerary if we travel to that area again

Wish we had time to go deeper into Canyonlands' other districts. Good *****

And that Land Cruiser is goals. I literally look every few months to see if there are an J80's for sale. Absolutely bulletproof.
