Hey Ags,

In light of this article how would you guys suggest smuggling alcohol onto a Carnival cruise ship? It'll be my first time ever on a cruise.

Here's my idea: They will still allow you to bring a 12-pack of soda. I will rip open the box, and fit some beers in there. The two sodas exposed by the opening by the handle will be coke zero's.

Any other suggestions?

Its hit or miss. Your idea may work. Our company cruises with carnival every year. My last cruise I smuggled two bottles of scotch on board. They will xray your bags and getting them confiscated depends on the laziness of the TSA or port person. My last cruise my kid got his bag and opened it and at the top was a "TSA searched your bag for contraband" letter. He only had put a couple of bottles of Gatorade in his bag but I started to worry.

I was worried because mine had Gatorade and two bottles of Scotch near the bottom wrapped in clothes. Got my bag and sure enough there was a search letter however the scotch was still there. I surmise that it is like an airport - there are so many bags that a scanner identifies a bag to be searched and it passes to someone else for the actual search so that the line doesn't stop. The person called over to do the search opened my bag and saw a couple unopened and still sealed Gatorade bottles and zipped it back up without digging further.

We've also poured vodka into a plastic scope bottle and used green food coloring. Good luck. You'll save some money bringing your own drinks and even if they catch it, you'll get the bottles back at the end of the cruise.

Jesus people, stop trying to be a thief. If you can't afford to buy some drinks, then stay a home.

Fake shampoo bottles. When I'm really trying to smuggle stuff I put underwear all around it.

Rum runners for booze have a good chance of making it through.

We brought a case of beer in our luggage and taped a 20 to it. When we got on board, both 20 and beer still there

Did this on three separate cruises and worked every time:

Large contact solution bottle - any liquor

Large Scope or Listermint bottle - clear liquor with a few drops of green food coloring.

You are allowed to bring one bottle of wine for each adult, so don't forget your free pass beverage.

My bar bill was $250+ for the week, so they made lots of money off of us. However, i saved quite a bit with bringing my own liquor on the ship with the son's all-you-can-drink soda card ($35+ for the week). Get busy with coloring up that Scope!

Nothing says "relaxing vacation" like stressing out over whether you will get busted for trying to smuggle in alcohol.

It's super easy.

Just go to Specs or another liquor store and ask for a "shark fin" as I call it, but it's just a flask made out of plastic and looks like a zip loc bag but with a lid on the top. You can pour about 750ml worth of liquor inside of them. The cruise lines can't detect it unless they search the bag.

I don't recommend carrying alcohol in sodas, etc. My neighbor works for Pepsi and has gotten caught twice even though he would get caps from his office that showed the seal hadn't been broken. The cruise line will open one of them to smell.

I've been on 4 cruises and rum runners worked each time. No, I do not feel guilty. I'm not sure what makes me a thief. I didn't steal anything. The room stewards don't care. The alcohol is out in the open. My bar tab was more than enough for Carnival not to complain.

Seems like a lot of trouble to get 10 beers in on a cruise ship.

No idea what it's like on a cruise as I've never been, but at the airport they'll take what they think is the problem out and rescan it to confirm.

If you can't afford to buy booze on a cruise ship, your ass needs to stay at home. Seriously. It's tacky and against the cruise line's rules.

They charge $25 for 4 beers. FOUR. It is a huge ripoff.

If you are only bringing 10 beers, you might as well just buy beer on the ship. If you are sneaking stuff in, you might as well make it worth your effort and bring enough liquor to actually make a difference.

Fun police over here! It's no different than sneaking shots in for a game or something. If they don't want people taking stuff on, maybe they should think about lowering their prices a little.

Or it's the way for a cut-rate cruise line to actually turn a profit.

If they charge $12-15 for 4 beers which is more reasonable and still has room for profit, I would buy all my alcohol on the ship. But because of this I will be bringing my own and not buying much if any from them.

They're going to catch this. The guys searching aren't stupid. The only way they won't is if your bag doesn't get picked to be searched.

We used rum runners and had no problems. I put them in bags with other liquids like sunscreen, shampoo, etc. Problem for us, we didn't drink much of what we brought because we preferred the variety of mixed drinks on the ship.

So your values and morals depend on profit margins?

For starters I don't sneak booze into any sporting event. I get pretty plastered beforehand and ride it out during the game if we're talking about Aggie sports. If you have to sneak booze into a pro athletic event, you're still a cheap ass thief or worse.

College athletics at a college venue and cruise ships is comparing apples to oranges.

In any event, Carnival finally wised up and will ban bottles brought aboard. Additionally, Carnival cruises are about the cheapest means of travel one can do and see a some cools spots. I still call folks who sneak booze aboard cheap asses.

And I find this post highly ironic seeing as you pay $25/month on TexAgs for some bits and bytes of data.

$25 for four beers is a better deal than nearly every pro sport. If you can get a beer for $6.25 at a pro event, I'd sure like to hear about it.

$25/month gets you some little stars, cute post icons and lots of jock sniffing around here. No thanks.

If the price of booze on a cruise really gets to you, you should probably reevaluate your financial position to be vacationing at all or need to consume alcohol.

You sort of have to expect things will cost more on a vacation. However I fully realize some folks feel the need to "stick it to the man" for charging higher prices for a premium good like alcohol.

Now the people who pay for wifi on cruises... that is something I will never understand.

I'd rather just get a buzz (rather than plastered) before the game and sip on my whiskey & coke during the game. I don't want to be that plastered guy.

From the same topic on the General board, I think the Golden Corral of Vacations description of cruises is appropriate.

I've said the one carnival cruise I went on due to lack of planning... Never again, was like being trapped in a Walmart with a Golden Corral inside. 7 days of torture. A week I will never get back.

A ballgame is a 3 hour events where you buy a few, a cruise is an event that you are on for a week and drink 50+ beers/drinks. Apples and oranges.
