Zambrano went 8 2/3 tonight giving up 3 hits, 3 walks, and 0 runs while striking out 9. He also went 3-4 at the plate with an RBI. Marmol came on for the 1 pitch save and the Cubs beat the Brewers 4-0.

Z's last 4 starts

quote:
7.1 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 8 K.
5.1 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 4 BB, 7 K.
7.0 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 8 K.
8.2 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 3 BB, 9 K.

He's 4-0 with a 0.95 ERA with 32 strikeouts against 10 walks. Now the teams he did that against weren't very good offensively (WAS, PIT, NYM & MIL) so those numbers need to be taken with a large grain of salt. But, that's what the old Z should be doing against such teams. Since returning July 31st after taking 5 weeks off presumably to deal with his emotional issues, his line is...

48.2 IP, 37 H, 10 ER, 29 BB, 43 K (5-0, 1.85)

That was a good article on Geo. It's almost depressing to read.

Good to Z turning it up, wonder if this will eventually make him a better trade prospect.

injuries aside, i did always wonder what Lou's obsession was with getting Koyie ABs...

and i wonder if this last month will take Z off the block completely...

The trading block? Keep him on. I'm telling you, I used to really like Z, but this is as good as it will get with him. He will not have as good of a season last year. At least not with the Cubs.

Combined 3-hit shutout for the Cubs tonight. Dempster went 7 and got the W, Marmol with the save. Cubs only get 1 run on a Nady HR but that was enough to win.

i dont know if this year's finish under Quade should make me more optimistic about next year or just more pissed off about the first half this year

I wouldn't put too much stock in it. The team that's playing now is not the team that was playing when things counted. ARam's not playing much, Lee's gone, a lot of rookies are in.

True, Geo is playing more and Z is playing better, even Wells is a bit improved.

Right now it's about resting the old men and letting the young guys get some time under their belts. That's what you need to be paying attention too.

less than $40 on stubhub gets you within 10 rows of an only partially meaningless Z vs Carpenter matchup on Wed... i love last minute weekday deals!

Beat the Cardinals again last night. Carlos Zambrano, Ryan Dempster, Casey Coleman, Jeff Samardzija and Wells have combined for an 0.46 ERA in the last five games. That's crazy.

In other news, Fredi Gonzalez reportedly withdrew his name from consideration to manage the Cubs next year. Apparently he wants to focus on getting the Braves job.

Need to get the last one tonight.

Anyone hear of Bob Melvin rumors? At least as a potential for the opening? I hope not, not that I don't like the guy, but anyone outside of Ryno or Joe would be a shame.

ST. LOUIS (AP)—Carlos Zambrano(notes) pitched six innings of two-run ball, Tyler Colvin(notes) hit a three-run homer and the Chicago Cubs beat the sliding Cardinals 7-3 Wednesday night to complete their first three-game sweep in St. Louis in more than 20 years.

Zambrano (9-6) allowed an earned run and four hits, improving to 6-0 with a 1.37 ERA in his last seven starts. He is 7-1 with a 1.29 ERA in 12 career starts in St. Louis, including 6-0 in seven outings at the new Busch Stadium.

It was the Cubs’ first three-game series sweep in St. Louis since June 10-12, 1988. Chicago also has won five consecutive games at the Cardinals for the first time since June 18-Aug. 14, 1983.

Soto is having season ending shoulder surgery.

Also, Colvin was taken to the hospital after a splinter from Castillo's bat punctured under his collarbone as Colvin slid into second. He's ok, but what a weird accident.

Just for clarification...Colvin was watching a flyball as a he ran towards home and didn't realize that the broken bat was coming towards him. Kind of a scary play.

Regarding Geo, what was his condition?

Ok, here's what it was.

quote:
Catcher Welington Castillo's bat broke as he was hitting a double to left field and the sharp end of the bat punctured Colvin's left side below the collarbone as he was headed to the plate to score.

As for Soto--

quote:
eeling persistent pain, Cubs catcher Geovany Soto decided Sunday to have season-ending surgery on his right shoulder AC joint.

The debridement procedure, basically a cleaning out of the joint, will be performed Monday in Chicago.

Soto is expected to be able to resume full baseball activities by January 1.

A friend just told me we're 17-7 under Quade, but I'm too lazy to go and count.

2-3 inches higher and Colvin would be dead.

Maple bats need to be banned after this incident.

Tyler Colvin Out for the Season
By Neil on September 19, 2010

Tyler Colvin will miss the remainder of the season after being impaled by the broken end of Welington Castillo's bat on Sunday afternoon. Colvin was hospitalized and will remain in a Miami hospital for the next two to three days.

Colvin is in stable condition and is being treated for pneumothorax, a puncture of the chest cavity, which allowed air into the chest wall and the potential of a collapsed lung. According to a report from the Tribune, "a tube was inserted into the wound, and Colvin is resting comfortably."

Tyler Colvin put together a very good rookie season after fighting for playing time early in the year. In 135 games (358 at bats), Colvin hit .254 with a .316/.500/.816 line. Colvin hit 18 doubles, five triples and became the fourth rookie in Cubs history to hit 20 home runs.

Holy ****! I've been out of pocket with very limited internet access since Friday, so I am just now hearing about Colvin's injury. So glad he is OK. Here is a link to video of the play.

You know, I'm not the biggest Dave Mathews fan. But, I draw the line at making fun of his listeners.

Thumbs up for the FBI

Both Wells (last night) and Zambrano (Tuesday night) didn't give up any runs. Where was this pitching a few months ago? Cubs win 2-0 last night.

In case you guys haven't been paying attention, Kerry Wood has been virtually unhittable for the Yankees. The only earned run he gave up has come off a solo home run.

23 IP
1 ER
26 K
0.39 ERA

Looks like he's doing great. ESPN did a write up on him, and there was also a blurb on another ESPN article about some deadline deals and how they've worked out.

http://espn.go.com/blog/statsinfo/post/_/id/7309/yankees-thankful-for-wood-bullpen

quote:

Consider a few other nuggets since he joined the Bronx Bombers:

• He has allowed just one run in 21 appearances – a solo homer to Aaron Hill on August 3 – and is currently riding a career-best streak of 19 consecutive scoreless appearances.
• Of the 69 outs he has recorded, 26 of them (38 percent) have been by strikeout, including 11 in four pitches or less.
• Of the 54 pitches put in play by opposing batters, just 10 have been recorded as “well hit” by the video scouts at Inside Edge, despite the fact that 34 have reached the outfield as line drives or flyballs.

Though Wood has been prone to allowing baserunners (13 walks and 13 hits in 23 innings), he had been nearly untouchable when those runners are in scoring position. Of the 28 batters he’s faced with a runner on second and/or third base, he has struck out 11 of them (39 percent), while giving up only two measly singles, neither of which scored a run.

As good as he’s been with runners in scoring position, he has been perhaps even more overpowering when getting into a two-strike count. Of the 57 batters he’s faced, he has retired 26 of them with a third strike and has allowed just five hits. He is perfect in September, having sat down all 20 batters reaching two strikes, including 11 via punchouts.
