Dodgers in NLCS again. I'm generally in root for anyone but the Dodgers mode. Although, a Dodgers vs Yankees matchup would be hard to cheer for anyone.

In the last 20 years, I'd bet Tampa's farm has churned out twice the talent than Texas has in franchise history. Define that however you will, in terms of all-star appearances, large contracts elsewhere, etc.

I'm in the process of putting that together. You'd likely be wrong. Have they likely produced more than the Rangers... maybe... but keep in mind the Competivr Balance system started in 2013.

From 1998 through 2007, the Rays maxed at 70Ws.

Their MO was different. They did make the WS and lost in 2008, but as we've talked about the "tanking" method. It was about concentrating talent in years by trading soon to be FAs. Teams got more for picks because you could get a sandwich draft pick for FAs you lost. That changed (don't recall the year) when MLB required a lost FA to have been on the Opening Daynroster in order to qualify for the pick. IIRC, need to confirm. But it was one reason we didn't get as much for the Darvish trade.

From 2014-2018 the Rays were avg at best and didn't make the playoffs. Being in the same division as NYY AND Bos likely had some to do with it.

MLB went to a more balanced Division schedule and incorporated a more AL/NL balanced schedule.

But if you look at their current roster... it has like 8 of then43 players having been drafted by them. And Rasmussen was a boomerang.

3 1st rounders- McClanahan '18, Rasmussen '17, Williams '21.

2 2nd rounders- Seymour '20, Simpson '22.
A 3rd, 12th, and 18th.

Then you have Intl signings. Wander Franco was signed for $3.8M. He signed for the most and was regarded as the #1 rated Intl player.

The Rangers roster Leiter (1st), Rocker (1st), Latz (11th rd), Bradford (6th rd), Collyer (12th), Winn (1st) on the pitching side.

Jung (1), Langford (1), Carter(2), Foscue (1) Osuna, Freeman (4), Cauley (3).

That's 12 drafted players and 1 Intl, just that come to mind. And we didn't get Competitive Balance picks... AND we lost draft picks when we signed deGrom, Seager, et al.

The biggest issue people complain about with the Rangers has been how many players we traded off. Guys like Ragans, and Kohl Drake (25, 5GS, 6.53 ERA and Mitch Bratt (22, 10GS, 4.30 ERA).

Whether you want to measure ASs, MLB players, or any other measure... you need to show your work. You can't declare truth with an opinion.

Does Tampa have better scouts and development? Maybe. But it isn't glaring and isn't leaps ahead.

One thing I complained about JD was... I would say "nobody can trade MLBs for minor leagues like JD." It wasn't a compliment. Anyone can get minor leaguers for MLB players. Just nobody dumped as many for a little in return as he got.

I look forward to your analysis.

I hope you also do Toronto, because that seems to be a productive system as well.

And Baltimore seems to produce a ton of talent and do absolutely nothing with it.

(I like what you're thinking, keep him busy!)

I'd love it if someone could give us a really wordy rundown of all 30 major league teams minor league production as big leaguers. Like pages worth of stats with only cherry-picked analysis that often completely mis-interpret statistics.

Don't really have to worry about that matchup after last night.

Here's a snapshot of guys drafted (and signed) since 2011 with career earnings of $10,000,000+

Highlighted are two guys that developed (and made their hey) with Tampa

It doesn't appear the Rays draft better, but I don't think there's a real question that Tampa develops and/or gets more out of guys than the Rangers.

Fairbanks was a Ranger prospect, right? Traded for Sokol maybe?

Springs and his one seasonnof success with 135 IP and then blew out his arm?

Fairbanks likewise had one good season in 7 years with Tampa.

Thing is, Tampa takes a bunch of flyers and you can see the one good season by one player, and forget all the players they use.

In 2022, MLB limited the number of times you could send players down to 5, because Tampa would shuttle players. They could use a bunch of fringe BP guys and then arrange to have fresh arms and bounce L or R RPs based on matchup.

Where are Tyler Glasnow, Austin Meadows, Chris Archer, all achieved success at Tampa, regardless of whether they were officially drafted by Tampa. All of those players were all stars in Tampa. The list is long …

Career earnings isn't perfect to show how good, or how developed a player has been but those two guys have made a lot of money based on what they achieved in Tampa.

I'm not doing all your homework for you

Even the Rangers have all stars that they didn't draft or develop. I'd guess this is the reality for most clubs

Same can be said for deGrom, Seager, Simien, and A-Rod.

Not true. I just posted about Tampa's free agent signings. Which are essentially nothing. That's not what I'm talking about.

If a player is up for a cup of coffee, then gets sent down, Tampa trades for him, then develops the guy into a serious mlb player, that's notable. We don't do that. Ever.

Add Arozarena to the list.

Yes. 2023 was a joke. Outside of the Cruz, Hamilton, kinsler, andrus window this has been our downfall.

Add them up! We've got 6 months. Longoria, upton, Matt Garza, big game james. This won't work out in our favor, especially if you're already dipping into dregs like Harrison.

Dunning was pretty serviceable and had one solid year if I remember correctly. I don't like this game.

The Rangers had him try to bring more velocity differential on he changeup and it broke him.

Bascic was talking about Dunning learning the new pitch real time when Bascis was a host on The Fan. He said the problem rises that you only get so many throws in a session and if you spend time throwing a new pitch, not only can it mess with your mechanics, but it takes away from the number of throws for your other pitches.

I'm guessing Dunning never got command of the new pitch and the lack of repetition for the others took away what little he had. Left him as a batting practice pitcher. Went from 2.8% to 4.4% in HRs. BA went to *****.. it would be argued the whole point of needing the new pitch was that he didn't have enough to remaining the rotation, anyway...

#3 overall pick, #2 pick and a spare, drafted and developed by Minn, spare.

Shields had a 4.40 Road ERA. 3.68H
Harrison was 3.88 and 4.57

Shields kinda benefitted pitching in Tampa and KC. Away? Not so much. Harrison pitched in a very hitting friendly park.
