And that in a nutshell is the Dodgers advantage.

They have so much money to spend (legal and what appears to be illegal) that they can afford to give someone $240MM and if it doesn't work just cut them. Pay them off to leave.

It's also why they can trade their top prospects to get the top rated players at the deadline. They can fill holes left by trading prospects later by buying FAs.

Short version is the principal owner of the Dodgers was using his other companies to launder money to the corporations that the had the Dodgers media rights to inflate the media right values that in turn allowed the Dodgers to have more spending capital. In in doing tis he wasnt reporting it to the feds. They didnt really have the money they are spending.

He may have a $20B (yes B) "loan" he has to pay back by the end of the year.

It also kind of looked like tax fraud to me if I read the scheme right. Basically a group of owner companies paying the team for media rights at a loss that can be counted against taxes, then earning the money back as owners of the team.
