A Square to Remember
I've officially called it on George Springer reaching his squares of 78 RBI and 80 runs scored. He would need 41 RBI and / or 36 runs scored in the Blue Jays' last 37 games to get there. I'm leaving his 24 HR on the table for now (he as 12) as he can heat up there and have a 3- HR game out of nowhere to make it more plausible. Yours truly was the only beneficiary of his, as I picked Springer < 80 runs.
Yordan needs 3 more games played to reach his 125 games square.
Alex Bregman needs 9 to reach his 130 game square.
Tucker needs 14 to reach his 130 game square.
GOAT Report: As an early poster mentioned, Altuve continues to have a really strong August and is up to 2,481 hits. He's now halfway between David Ortiz and Ted Simmons at 2,472 and the next layer Fred McGriff at 2,490 (#104) and Mickey Vernon at 2,495 (#103). If he stays healthy and relatively productive, he has a shot to finish 2026 at #100 all-time, which is 2,517, currently held by another pretty good Astro 2B named Joe Morgan.
He's also up to 1,292 runs scored, which is good for 134th all-time. He passed Tigers' legend Harry Heilmann last night. He's 98 runs away from the top 100 all time.
He reached #92 in career doubles a couple of days ago and now has 470. He's 1 behind Larry Walker. The numbers ahead are the realm of the uber elite:
Only 65 players have reach 500 doubles.
Only 32 have reached 550.
Only 18 have reached 600. I don't think Jose has another 130 doubles in him, but 550 is a reasonable number if he stays healthy for another 4-5 seasons that would be 20 a year for 4 years.
Biggio is 6th with an ungodly 668 all time.
Tough Math
If you picked the Astros to finish with a 3.86 ERA or less, well, it's going to take some effort. They can't allow more than 56 earned runs total in the final 38 games of the year. Now, that would be a great story, as that would give them a team ERA of 1.47 for the rest of the season, but perhaps just a bit out of reach.
Astros' Flashback: August 16, 1968: In a matchup of best against best, Jimmy Wynn hits a game-tying home run off Tom Seaver with two outs in the top of the ninth inning against the Mets to send the game to extra innings at 1-1. 21-year-old Larry Dierker has gone toe-to-toe with the 23-year-old Seaver for most of the game. Neither factors in the decision despite Seaver going 10 innings. In the top of the 12th, Bob Asrpomonte doubles in Rusty Staub with two out to win the game 2-1.
