Angels proving once again that if your strategy involves counting on the Angels, you've miscalculated.

The ways they lose games in the late innings is inexplicable.

Unfortunately the idea of needing extra innings to beat one of the worst teams in the league doesn't excite me

Astros Bingo Update: 8-111-26

Reasons to Smile
Cam Smith embodying what my high school basketball coach used to call: Showing Up and Growing Up - getting trusted in big-time opportunities and delivering consistently over an extended period of time. Cam is hitting .481 through 27 at-bats in August with a 1.369 OPS.

As stated last night all 3 parts of the Tucker trade were huge last night.

Reasons to Maybe Reconsider an Earlier Barf
It might be we caught the Padres in their own late-season acceleration. They won against Milwaukee 3-2 last night, limiting the Brewers to 5 hits and beating their No. 2 pitcher. San Diego is 7-3 in August.

The Amazing World of HOFA
This stat is heavily skewed because when the Astros get their asses beat on nights when I commit to HOFA, I usually stop posting and watching at some point. However, expert analysis shows that when the Astros are worthy of 9 (or more) innings of HOFA, their record is now 13-2 (.867)

SQUARES ACHIEVED: Last night, Brittle Mike Trout played in his 100th game of the year, a heavily contested Astros Bingo square. Ten people added a point, 15 others had another square exxed out. The people adding one:

Hornbeck

Astros' Flashback: August 11, 1982: Nolan Ryan pitches a 1-hit shutout of the Padres. San Diego catcher Terry Kennedy gets the only knock, a slow-rolling single in the 5th inning. Nolan strikes out 6 and walks 3 to defeat Eric Show, who celebrates the loss by snorting as much cocaine as possible. Dickie Thon, in the midst of a breathtaking breakout year at age 23, extends his hitting streak to 20 games. Twelve years later, Ryan will retire with 12 one-hitters along with his 7 no-hitters.

And now the late-season sensation, sweeping the nation

What Have You Become?
A look at MLB teams much more disappointing than the Astros in 2026.

Day 2 Entry: Detroit Tigers

2025 Finish: 87-75, 2nd place AL Central, defeated Cleveland in WC series, lost to Seattle in 5 game ALDS
2026 Current: 58-60, still in the mix in a terrible AL Central and a terrible AL

The Skinny:
  • In 2025, Spencer Torkelson and Riley Greene combined for 67 HR. This year, they're on pace for 45 combined.
  • Other than Greene, their OF is worse than ours. Matt Vierling in CF (-0.9 WAR) and Kerry Carpenter in RF (-0.5 WAR).
  • They paid Justin Verlander $13 million to pitch 3-2/3 innings this year. Even Lance McCullers thinks that's a bit much.
  • They signed Pouty McGoo for 3 years, $115 million to be their No. 2 behind Skubal. McGoo is 7-7 with a 4.17 ERA. And Skubal got traded.
Charley's expert analysis: They secretly paid Verlander's $13 million just so Kate Upton would come to a few charity events and their C-suite guys could drool in person instead of from afar. Chris Paul knows what I'm talking about.

While I was a little concerned about Yordan, his hits last night were 109 and 118 .5 mph. Not bad.

It's baseball. Even your worst teams in the league are going to win 60+ games, and your best teams are going to lose 60+ games.

It took the Strangers extras to beat a bad Angels team
It took the Rays until the 9th inning to overtake a bad A's team
It happens.

Contrary to public opinion, the Astros are 28-15 against teams at or over .500, and 33-44 against teams under .500.

We actually play the good teams well, and struggle against the bad teams.

More than half of the "under .500" damage is caused by 1-7 against Seattle (who are 13-under .500 against everyone but us)

Mariners are 9-19 since reaching 47-44 on July 5 and have lost 13 of their last 18 to drop to 56-63.

Their next 21 games are 3 @ NY Yankees (66-52), 3 @ Houston (61-59), 3 @ Milwaukee (74-45), 3 vs. Cubs (69-50), 3 vs. Phillies (64-56)

After that, 3 @ Toronto (57-63) and 3 @ BOS (64-54).

That's a lot of games against good teams (and us and Toronto).

It seems really unlikely they'll be less than 10 games under .500 by the end of that.

Take Seattle out and we're 32-37 against everyone else. Still vastly different than 28-15.
Take Texas out of the over .500 club and were 19-11 against the rest of the league.
