We should sign one but I highly doubt both. The question may come down to which one do the Astros prefer?

I doubt they both came to Houston without an agreement. The plan was quantity this draft, and it looks like they achieved it. Now let's see if anyone hits... bump this in 2029-30.

I've accepted over the last few months that while I know busting up the team and getting the next potential crop of stars in return is the smart thing to do, but my heart doesn't care about the future. Even a sliver of a chance of making the playoffs means Triple Crown Yordan getting the praise he deserves and one more chance for Altuve October magic. My brain gets overruled every time.

Yes, please. I want him to make a run at the HR lead.

I'm not referring to Johnson and Peterson. I'm talking about Beck and Tronstein. I assume Johnson and Peterson are already signed. Here's the breakdown of what we have saved. It seems like more than we need to sign 3 of the 4 HS guys but insufficient budget for all 4 so either one of them is getting a bigger bonus than expected or one is taking a decent chunk less and we sign them all. Once the budget announcements for Johnson and Peterson are out we should have a clearer picture.

Tronstein's a Vandy commit, so there could be some competition when it comes to money with an NIL deal. However, Beck is a Columbia commit. Maybe the Ivy League means something, but money-wise, he might take less.

Hah nevermind. I read it wrong. Beck is from Columbia Central HS. He's committed to Georgia Southern. I bet we can land both.

Quote:

Beck has signed with Georgia Southern, but ahead of the draft told The Daily Herald, "getting drafted right now is the biggest (goal). Whatever it takes to play pro baseball."

I'd love to fleece these guys. Yordan 2.0

we were a little worried tho.

Finally, the one that was THE WORST was the Hader trade. But we have to go 11 years back on this one.

The Carlos Gomez trade is an all-timer…got rid of Hader right before he busted out, brought in a complete bust in Gomez who was clearly unpopular in the clubhouse and tanked any hope of the 2016 season turning into something.

Worst of all…it also brought Fiers.

True. When you think about the totality of the trade it effectively included giving up 2 firsts and 2 seconds as well

This is a vet I wouldn't mind adding. Think the Braves would trade him for almost nothing then you can turn around and trade Yainer. Whether selling or buying I just think that's an overall upgrade this year and next.

Speaking of Chas from earlier

It is wild how from 2021-2024 the Chas vs Jake debate took up so much time on these threads. And now in 2026 when they both should be in their prime, they are both in AAA

I do think Chas made more of an impact in his time though. The 2022 ALCS hitting 2 homeruns, the WS catch, and then the really good 2023 season that included clutch homeruns

No Astros Bingo update today since we didn't play, but this day in history was worth a look back.

07/24 2007 On the day he announces his retirement effective at the end of the season, Craig Biggio blasts a grand slam homer off Rudy Seanez that breaks up a 3-3 tie and defeats the Dodgers, 7-4. It's the 3,016th hit of his career.

Now that we're seeing Altuve struggle so mightily to get to 2,500, let alone 3,000, it brings a new appreciation of what a machine late-career Biggio was, basically reinventing himself as his speed left him. He stole 28 bases in 1999 at age 33 and then never more than 16 again (2002). But in the last 3 full seasons of his career at ages 38-40, he hit 24, 26, and 21 homers. In 2004, at age 38, he had 100 runs scored, 178 hits, 27 doubles, 24 HR, and 63 RBI, hitting .281 with a .806 OPS.
He reminds me a lot of Paul Molitor in his last few years. When Molitor left the Brewers for Toronto in 93 at age 37, he turned into an RBI machine (and made the Brewers look like idiots). Molitor led the league with 211 hits in 1993 at age 36 and drove in 111 runs (his previous high was 89). In 1996 at age 39, he led the league with 226 hits - his career high, and drove in 113 runs.

Fan cam!

that's all part of what made Biggio great

he adjusted his game as he got older...and also as he changed home ballparks

Chas also leads Jake in career outfield assists

Doesn't matter. We got the tried and true "Yordan and Jalapeña hit a jack everyday" offense. Guarantees at least 5 runs. What are you concerned they can't continue to hit HR's every day? Get a dog!

Any of the data dudes feel like diggin up the numbers on Altuve hitting leadoff?

I know he's not what he used to be but it seems to be that he's just better in leadoff spot. Seems like anytime he makes it back up into that spot he comes back around closer to the Altuve we're used to.

Same seems to be true when he plays each and every day. Every time they try and rest him or baby him he never comes out of it until he's in there every day.

Maybe I'm just making this up. IDK

Any reason why they couldn't go Altuve/Yordan/Pena...

As much as I hate it Fiers summer in 2017 kept that team afloat while many others were scuffling pitching
