I'm going to throw this trade out there as more of an example of something I think you can do to still be competitive in 2027, but it's based on the assumption Crane is willing to spend up again next year. You trade HB but get two pitchers in return who are big league ready (one a former Cy Young winner). The Dodgers eat some cash this year so we can stay under the luxury tax. Both Snell and Ryan are controlled through 2029. Mike Sirota has been completing balling out and gives you a really good future OF bat so you still get a piece to improve the farm. Obviously don't love helping the Dodgers but at least they are in the NL and maybe if we eff over the rest of the league they will finally nut up against them in the next CBA.

If Hunter brown was healthy this would make sense. But until he's on a MLB mound again I worry he won't have much trade value

The idea of doing anything to help them makes me want to vomit

Honestly I don't think they should trade anyone until after the season when you have a new GM and manager and a clear direction of what those people want to do.

I noticed the other day a drastic change in his defensive stats. This is like going from a 5 HR guy to 40. We really should bring in Ron Washington, best defensive coach in the game.

We "helped" them one time sending a reliever and got YED out of it. I think that worked out OK.

A couple of months won't matter, and might even help. HB can show he's healthy- even Yordan can prove he's capable of producing for a full season (hopefully). It's far better to do it right than do it fast.

But I wouldn't mind fast, lol.

It just depends. Teams are more desperate at the deadline so you might get a bargain. In the offseason it's easier to plan out your budget but teams can also be more deliberate. We shouldn't be in a hurry either way because we should be making a decision on buyer vs seller way before the deadline.

Dang. It seems like every time I turn around, Doobie is doing something good for the Braves. Driving in runs, making defensive plays, etc.

He did a lot of the same for us, but people just didn't want to acknowledge it for some reason.

Bogusevic is the only name that even sounds vaguely familiar out of that lineup. I must have blocked them out too.

Because he's on the postgame show on SCHN...he's incredibly boring to watch but my frame of reference is about two and a half postgame shows because a couple games finished before I finished feeding my daughter her bottle.

And that's mainly bc he's the postgame guy now … I have no recollection of him actually playing

Dark days, indeed, but how anyone could forget about two-time PAC-10 POTY Brett freaking Wallace puzzles me.

Back when you could pay $20 for field box seats on the secondary market or just pay $7 for nosebleeds and go sit pretty much anywhere in the field boxes because no one gave a ****.

It's time to dredge out one of my all-time Astro horror stories that you guys from the 1980s will recall fondly.

It was a beautiful August day in 1989. My brother was off somewhere with his stoner friends, my parents were both working, and the Astros had an 11:35 AM game with the Reds at Riverfront on Channel 20. I sat in the most comfortable chair in the house, walked over our 19 inch RCA, pressed the "2" and the "0" and sat back to enjoy some baseball.

The Astros, despite getting rid of Nolan and replacing him with Jim Clancy, were cruising along at 61-47. We were a game behind the Giants as Kevin Mitchell rode the steroid train to an unlikely MVP, and even better, a year after their Cinderella BS World Series win, the Dodgers were 51-58, on their way to a losing record for the season.

Of course, Clancy - or as my dad used to call him "WTF is wrong with this guy?" - was starting that day against Tom Browning. Clancy was 4-9, Browning was 8-10, so not exactly a mismatch.

The good guys went 1-2-3 in the top of the first with some offensive woes that we know all too well in the 2020s. Billy Hatcher popped out on the infield on the first pitch of the game, Gerald Young struck out, and Billy D blasted one to deep left center that Eric the Red ran down.

Then came the bottom of the first, with Clancy on the mound.

Mariano Duncan walked.
Duncan stole second.
Luis Quinones reached on a bunt single to Clancy.
Eric Davis singled to center, scoring Duncan, 1-0 Reds
Ken Griffey, age 38, hit a 3-run homer to left-center, 4-0 Reds.
Rolando Roomes, yeah, I forgot about him too, single to shortstop.
Todd Benzinger singled to right.
Jeff Reed singled to center, 6-0 Reds

As memory serves, Art Howe went out to the mound and shot Clancy in the face at this point. Bob Forsch came in after they had cleaned up the blood.

Forsch threw a wild pitch, 7-0 Reds.
Tom Browning grounded out! See, was that so hard?
Duncan double to right field 8-0 Reds
Quiones singled to left
Davis singled to right, 9-0 Reds.
Griffey singled to left, 10-0 Reds
Roomes singled to third
Benzinger doubled to right, 13-0 Reds
Jeff Reed singled to center
Ron Oested singled to right, 14-0 Reds
Tom Browning singled to left
Duncan flied out to left
Quiones flied otut to right

14 runs, 16 hits, 0 errors, 3 LOB

Clancy's line for the game: 0 innings pitched, 6 hits, 7 earned runs, 1 walk. ERA: infinity
Forsch sucked it up and pitched the next 6 innings. His line for the day: 7 innings pitched, 18 hits, 10 earned runs, 0 walks, 3 strikeouts. That's a solid 12.86 ERA for the day.

Glenn Davis tried to start an answering rally with a homer leading off the 2nd, but it didn't pan out. Reds won 18-2. They had 26 hits and only 1 walk. Their team batting average for the day was .529.

Astros fell to 61-48, played sub .500 baseball the rest of the way (25-28) and missed the playoffs by 6 games.

This brings up something I was thinking. Couldn't we get more for Yordan now than at the trade deadline? How about now vs the offseason?

Deadlines tend to drive deals. The only recent May deal of significance I can think of is Arraez to the Padres. Our target date should be July 1. I'd like to do pre-draft because a) you may be able to trade for someone's compensation pick which makes it easier to line up a deal if specific players aren't a fit and b) it may change draft strategy. We *shouldn't* be drafting based on need but if we are taking a step back that eliminates any potential rationalization for taking a lower ceiling player just because he will make his way through the minors quicker (see the Angels).

This was my exact point on the discussion yesterday of whether this is a 100 loss team.

Unless you fire sale, we are still nowhere close to 2012-2014 bad.
