Brice Mathews time?

Is it just me, or have players become wusses?
I remember Curt Schilling pitching with blood coming from an open wound on his ankle. I remember Tony Romo and Aaron Rodgers playing with broken ribs.
Nowadays in the MLB, people sit out half a season with a bone bruise.
Now I'm inclined to want him moreHeineken-Ashi said:
Don't want Jace. He doesn't make enough contact. His swing is very much one that needs the ball to run into his plane. He has zero ability to make productive things happen off well placed pitches in his cold zones, and I dont see that changing. Hope I'm wrong.
Raw power is great. But give me untapped power and a top-end contact tool any day. The raw power can develop. The contact usually cant.

So Yordan, McCormick, Dezenzo, Whitcomb, Peña, Garcia, France, Javier, Arrighetti, and the pitcher from the Cubs. Almost an entire lineup (throw Rogers in for giggles) and an entire rotation.
All you can do is laugh.

12 games before All Star break. They resume at Seattle.
After 3 vs Rockies starting tomorrow they get Dodgers, Indians, and Arlington.
Would be nice if someone among Altuve, Diaz and Walker catches fire in this stretch.
Small fracture in the ribs (if that's really the case) would have him back around late July.AggiEE said:
****, these injuries are really terrible
Pena is now likely out for the entire season
I have seen a lot of mocks with him to the O's and notes that we are his floor. I'd love the pick but it is a bit funny how everyone here hated on Gallo for years when Jace is a very similar player. A better defensive Adam Dunn / Schwarber seems like a feasible and valuable player.texasaggie2015 said:
2025 MLB expert mock draft: We make picks for all 30 teams - ESPNQuote:
21. Houston Astros
Pick: Jace LaViolette, OF, Texas A&M
Astros GM Passan: This is the point in the draft where the good teams happily use their first-round pick as a lottery ticket on someone whose stock has fallen. And nobody has cratered quite like LaViolette, who stands 6-foot-6 and 230 pounds and has spent the past two seasons in center field for the Aggies. LaViolette has huge raw power and a very good eye, but his .258 batting average alarmed enough teams to allow him to drop here, where the Astros -- whose GM, Dana Brown, was a longtime scouting director who loved tooled-up prospects -- gladly snap him up.
McDaniel's draft analysis: This is quite realistic, both that Laviolette is the college hitter from this tier who slides and that Houston would be the team that takes him because of the Astros' style and him being a semi-local player.
Yepp 0/10 do not recommend. That and costal strain have been some of the most painful injuries I have ever dealt with. Hoping JP heals quickly.Mathguy64 said:
I've broken a rib before. It hurt like hell for a month. Sneezing was a *****. I can't imagine having one while swinging a bat.
Depends on whether or not you think the real Jace was the 2024 version or the 2025 version.MaxPower said:I have seen a lot of mocks with him to the O's and notes that we are his floor. Story on Peña headed to the IL with quotes from Dana Brown.

“This isn’t one of those things where you have to be sidelined the whole time. Once the inflammation goes down, he might feel good enough to swing a bat.” https://t.co/ih2G09Jpcf
I'm not a doctor but my understanding is it's pretty normal for swelling, bruising, etc. to affect visibility of some fractures during x-rays. Why you still treat the symptoms and take it easy then do follow up x-rays, which is what they did.Mr.Bond said:htxag09 said:Honest question....what's the issue with the medical staff w/ the handling of Pena?Mr.Bond said:

And we let them do it with no retaliation at all.W said:this is a legitimate concerntxags92 said:I assume Seattle will plunk a few more guys and we will do nothing as usual.BadAggie said:

the Mariners plunked Pena 3 times during the May series
Same. Broke a rib playing goalie in soccer and landing on a guy's shoulders coming down with a corner kick. The quack shack doc on duty at midnight told me it was separated cartilage. Xray for a work physical 4 months later showed the healed fracture clear as day. I couldn't sit up in bed without rolling sideways first for about a month.BCEDAg said:
I can't blame the Astros medical staff on the situation with Peña's injury due to a similar situation I had years ago. I thought I had fractured a rib but the initial X-ray only showed a bruised rib. During the next few days I was still experiencing a lot of pain and had a CT that revealed a fracture. So unfortunately it happens and can't blame the doctor if swelling hides the fracture.
Yes. This is completely normal.htxag09 said:I'm not a doctor but my understanding is it's pretty normal for swelling, bruising, etc. to affect visibility of some fractures during x-rays. I understand this isn't an isolated instance and past issues make it all seem worse. But, my opinion, this was handled all pretty up to par....
The hope is Astros SS Jeremy Pena will miss just 2 weeks, per source.

Of course, the healing process will dictate the timeline.
