That's an insane amount of- glad Astros didn't match.

That's a lot of dough to hit 260 with 25 home runs.

So 3yrs/$36M is what makes his Astros offer whole?

BoSox are crazy. 4/$30M per would have been more reasonable.

Astros are better for signing him and Bregman ensures he leaves no fans behind.

They can have him. Way too expensive for what little production we got from him when it mattered.

Problematic for Red Sox fans. When they play the Astros in Boston to they boo Altuve and cheer Bregman?

Definitely a high price, however his defense will be extremely missed. Also something to be said about the core group of these golden years being completely gone, sans Altuve and Yordan. What a time.

both sides took risk

the Red Sox had to pay a premium to get him for only 3 years

but that's the way to do it nowadays for players in their 30's

cannot hand out 6, 7, 8-year deals anymore

I think they definitely overpaid and I'm glad the Astros passed.

To play devil's advocate...

the all time most successful hitter at Fenway is... Bregman.

Red Sox fan here. I think they overpaid, but the organization has trashed every ounce of goodwill they had over the last 5 seasons. They needed to show they were serious about fielding a winning team. Bregman should do really well at Fenway. It fits his style well.

Am I getting this correct?!

$5M - Signing bonus
$15M - 2025
$20M - 2026
$20M - 2027

$20M - 2025
$20M - 2036
$20M - 2037

Does that sound like a better deal than Houston offered?! I look at that as someone who took far less.

Hope he fails in Boston.

Its a worse deal but it's clear he wanted to reach free agency again with fallback protection. If he has a big year then being a free agent without a QO should help him a lot. He could wind up getting $160+M with the $40M he made this year. That said, if he has another year like 2024 he'll just be a year longer in the tooth and further from 2019.

Making $20 million at age 42 and 43 for doing nothing, as you'll presumably be retired, seems like a pretty sweet deal.

except there is not interest on the money, so inflation will eat away at that number.

$1,000,000 in 2015 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $1,331,571.15 today.

is he set for life? yes.
Is the purchasing power on his $20m way less in 12 years? yes.

But what other job could he possibly have that would pay him $20 m at age 42 and 43?

thats not the point I was making, the point I am making is he really isnt making $40m per year if half is deferred for 12 years, it is considerably less. Always get your money up front. They astros offer was actually more (considerably more) than what the red sox offered

$20m today is worth around $12m in 12 years. You can thank your government for that
