I saw him hit a grand slam against the Rangers back in 1990? 4th of July game. He ran all the way out to the outfield to sign the ball for the fan. Pretty cool moment

As a Rangers fan growing up I hated Rickey. We would sit in the LF bleachers of Arlington Stadium and heckle him unmercifully. He always took it in stride and was good natured about it.

Later in life I began to respect the way he played and his talent and could tolerate him.

He and Nolan Ryan were forever linked through Nolan's milestone moments. He was Nolan Ryan's 5000th K. He was the last out (a foul out to Rueben Sierra in RF) for Ryan's 6th no-hiiter. And, he broke Lou Brock's SB record the a few hours prior to Nolan's 7th no-hitter. He proclaimed himself the greatest player ever that day and then Nolan threw his 7th later that day.

RIP Rickey.

Oh man. My absolute all time favorite baseball player. When I first fell in love with baseball as a kid the A's were on top of the world and became my favorite team and he was my favorite player. Loved his tenacity and his swagger.

Way too young. RIP.

Absolute showman and a heck of a baseball player.
Always enjoyed watching him.
One of the best to play in my opinion.
RIP

It always shocks me when an excellent athlete dies at a relatively young age. Was not a big fan of "Rickey be Rickey" but he was definitely a personality that was fun to watch and one that was good for the Game.

Met him in Arizona at spring training 10 years ago or so. He was sitting in the bleachers and was very approachable and friendly. Glad I was able to say hello, shake his hand and talk to him for a bit. Rest easy, legend.

Yikes he was younger than me.

Only HOF player that batted right handed and threw left handed.

There's a funny story about him in George Will's "Men at Work".

He wasn't very polished when he signed his first contract. A coach on his first minor league team was going over the signs with him, including the take-off sign, i.e. the sign that would negate the previous one.

He got on base and when he saw the 3rd base coach give the take-off sign he stole second. When asked why he did that he explained that he thought take-off meant to take off and run. The guy was hard wired to steal bases.

Rickey sliding into home cause that's what Rickey does.

It wasn't even his speed that made him lethal on the bases....he read the pitchers better than anyone I've ever seen

Cmon man, he clearly was referencing best base stealer.

"There is a peculiar and painful symmetry here: the Oakland Athletics and the Oakland Athletics' all-time greatest player, Rickey Henderson, have both departed from the scene within two months of each other."

My first ever baseball game was an A's game at the Colosseum. 1982, 2nd grade, got free tickets for reading some number of books.

I love the story about him framing his 1st million dollar check from the A's. He didn't realize he had to cash it.

I remember reading or hearing that Manny Ramirez didn't have direct deposit for quite some time and just had stacks of paychecks worth hundreds of thousands of dollars in his car's glove compartment.

And it only came to everyone's attention when the accounting department was trying to figure out why they were $1mm over.

You're right, but that's not what he said. At the time, 16 year old me hated him and took it as Rickey saying Rickey was the best baseball player ever. Then Nolan one-upped him. I thought it was appropriate.

Again, I've come to respect and even be in awe of the record and his playing career in general but at the time, I hated him.

Edit: I just watched his speech and he says, "For a long time, Lou Brock was the greatest base stealer. But today, I am the greatest of all time."

If I remember correctly, ESPN did not include the part about Lou Brock. Or, again 16 year old me didn't hear that part. What I heard was arrogance and delusion. Hear is the uncut version that I'm not sure was played on Sportcenter that evening.

I'm not dying on any hill. My original post said I was wrong for many years and my next one showed I admitted my opinion was out of context.

I'm sad Rickey died. I realized 10 or 15 years ago that he was good for the game. His record will stand for a very long time, maybe forever.

From The Baseball Factory on FB:

Quote:

Rickey spent more of his career as the all time steals leader than not as the steals leader.

Rickey once went 0-for-0 with 4 walks, 5 steals, and 4 runs, the only 4/5/4 game in history, but didn't get a fifth PA because he was pulled early in a 16-7 blowout loss.

Rickey retired as the franchise leader in steals for the A's and Yankees, teams that were both 103 years old at the time.

Half of Rickey's steals (703) would still be top 10 all time.

The last time Rickey led MLB in steals was 1998, at age 39. In the next 24 seasons, the combined total of the stolen base leaders from each season is 1,385. Rickey had 1,406.

That's a lot of amazement packed into a short post. I wish that stolen bases were still a bigger part of the game. But it's about home runs and strikeouts now.

Now, on a somber note, I'm just a little older than Rickey was. And a couple of years ago my doctor told me I should get a pneumonia vaccination. I've been putting it off. Maybe now I'll get it done.

there is also the John Olerud helmet story

late in his career Rickey was talking to Olerud...and said he used to play with a guy that had to wear a helmet at all times in the field

and Olerud said yes...that was me

I loved this story and even heard Tony Gwynn tell it but is just a myth. But so very much something Rickey would say.

Very easy guy to talk to. I spent about 20 minutes visiting with him during his career with the As.

I wish people would stop ruining great stories with the truth. I'm always going to pretend no one ever disputed the John Olerud story.
