if you can trade Arenado and put Cam in right, all of a sudden, I really like this lineup regardless of CF

D'oh! Can't believe I forgot about him. I just looked it up and didn't realize it progressed past Sugar Land. He actually made it to the bigs and had a .87 ERA in 10.1 IP with San Diego in 2014

Has anyone at the ML level gone from a field player to pitcher full time?

I know Tim Wakefield made the change in the minors.

Implied in all of this Meyers discussion is that you have to talk about players objectively (in a vacuum) and in terms of fit.

While everyone wants to have prime Griffey roaming CF, that is not an option most of the time. Meyers has a good enough glove that despite the poor offensive production, he has value and is certainly fine for a 9-hole hitter.

Part of the frustration comes in when you try to squeeze in multiple Meyers-type players into the same lineup. That hurts a lineup. Just line Jeremy Pena - he has great value...as long as he is not hitting outside of the bottom third of the order. Pena hitting 6th is vomit-worthy.

A platoon with Jake has always seemed like an obvious, cost-conscious solution, but for whatever reason, we have not been able and/or willing to find a LH partner for him.
Except Meyers IS batting in the 9th spot, but he doesn't get talked about objectively.

I think part of the problem is Astros fans have truly forgotten the dark years. It's been close to 10 years now of top 10 offense, that the expectation is for every guy to come up and hit .270 with 20 bombs when that's absolutely above average for the entire league. So, a guy like Jake doesn't come close to that and Astros fans are ready to name him the worst player in the league when he's far, far from that.

Jake's role isn't a 500 AB guy, but he takes the brunt from this forum when he's actually being used where he's supposed to be aside from not platooning because the front office doesn't want to do anything to make that a reality.

if you can trade Arenado and put Cam in right, all of a sudden, I really like this lineup regardless of CF
And then in 1 or 2 months when Cam is hitting .215, the board is ready for him to go down to AAA to figure it out.

Not saying that would happen, but it's the most likely scenario. The kid has 32 ABs in AA. He's seeing spring training pitching.

How are Chas and Jake doing against that same pitching if they are so easy to hit?

True talent can mash tho.

Chas and Meyers are seeing the same spring break pitching

I can play that game too - Yanier is batting .188 against the same pitching. Altuve is batting .182 against the same pitching. Yordan is batting .083 against the same pitching.

I'm excited about Cam Smith just like the rest of you guys, but man, this board was ready to send Bregman back down when he's was like 0-60 (or whatever it was) to start and he had 236 ABs at AA and 78 ABs at AAA prior to joining the Astros.
