pitch per at-bat analysis is simple

what does the opposing pitcher want the hitters to do?

does he want the hitters to swing early or work deep into the count?

That really makes it clear what an outlier we were relative to everybody else. Hopefully improving that is a big point of emphasis this spring.

If you feel like nerding out some more, how does the ranking of teams getting screwed by the umps correlate to pitches watched?

I'm going to go the opposite direction in this and say we'll see Paredes/Walker's #s come way down and the team will stay very low on this list.

As frustrating as it is to watch, you don't become this big a league wide outlier without doing something on purpose at a team level.

Would be interesting to compare our numbers vs the league for 2024 to the #s from 2017 and 2022.

I posted this on the Cubs thread, but figured I'd ask here as well, since this is a little more traveled group.

Going to Chi-town this summer to catch a sox and cubs game on the same trip (both fields).

Is there a good spot to sit at both parks? Since I am not a fan of either team, is there the 'good' seats for 'fan experience' that isn't $1,000 a pop?

thanks

I just went to Wrigley for the first time late last season. One thing I wish I paid attention to ahead of time is that there are some cool concessions that are only easily accessible if you have an outfield bleachers general admission ticket. I still had a great time sitting in a good first base seat, but I'd sit in the bleachers if I had to do it over again.

when we went to Wrigley, we sat in the bleachers - it was a lot of fun

We talked about this last post-season when it was a big discussion, but the post-season mix of teams who saw a lot of pitches versus those who didn't were like half and half.

4 of the bottom 10 of teams who didn't see a lot of pitches made the post-season. The Astros were certainly an extreme outlier.

Yeah, I was just curious about the statcast listing showing the Astros tops among teams who the umps like to call balls as strikes against our hitters. I wonder how much that gets into a team's mindset and forces them to start swinging at anything close to the strike zone? If there was a correlation between the teams that saw the fewest pitches and the teams that umps called balls as strikes against them, it would suggest that was the case.

It's the listed height from what I've read too.

Does that mean more guys will list their real height instead of an inflated number?

I think the tell for it being dead will be if anyone sees Altuve taking ground balls at second base on a regular basis. From what I've gathered he hasn't done that at all yet.

Funny hearing Josh Jordan complaining about trading for a guy with declining stats at 3B through his age 36 season

Meanwhile he was crying about us not signing Bregman, who is a similar player, and whose 6 year contract would be far more substantial than 3 years of Arenado for less than $50M

"The Texans, worth an estimated $6.1 billion according to Forbes, also may have one of the best rent structures in the NFL: They pay roughly $4 million a year to the county in rent, but they often get all of it back in tax rebates.

In seven of the last eight years, the Texans have made more on the rebates than they paid in rent, according to data from financial audits. That means the government essentially paid the team to play at NRG Stadium in those years. The lone exception was 2020."

It's insane to me how owners can keep getting away with stuff like this. The tax payers are subsidizing owner's franchise wealth, which is just wrong. There's almost zero downside risk for the owners as a result.

The McNairs are seriously overplaying their hand here. He is nowhere near as popular as his daddy was and might be about to be less popular than Bud Adams' horrid spawn. They have just started putting a semi watchable product on the field after nearly a decade of being a joke of a franchise that let go of several future hall of famers without getting much of anything for them. There is nothing wrong with their current stadium, and we still haven't been able to blow up the old one. I honestly think if a terrorist came in and blew up the dome at this point, they might be able to win a run for County Judge instead of going to jail.
